Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

  1. On the 3pm to 5pm TV blackout here are a couple of articles from 2011 covering the thinking back then. The Karen Murphy case appears not to have caused the waves predicted but are the SPL (as was) not challenging Harry Hood’s pub rights to show games?

Anyhoo if Bob Lord at Burnley started it, it is high time the thinking was revisited.

I think you’ll find BT’s been on the scene for quite some time!

I was referring to their right to screen certain EPL matches! Or have they been doing that for a while?

Well, good-bye Victor Wanyama. Sad to see you go. Had you stayed with Celtic, you could have joined our pantheon of legends. You may achieve greatness, but it won’t be at Southampton. Good luck.

Perhaps with the money he makes, Victor will be able to buy a couple of medals on ebay.

I think there are two Father Chambers being mixed up. I do not know if the older one from St Alphonus was a hun, but he married my first wife and I and because my lad looks in I’ll say no more. ;)

Then there was a younger version who plied his trade in East Kilbride and memory tells me he is the one with eye shades and a Porsche. Trendy guy.

Not sure which of the two is alive and well in Ireland but I’d say the St Alphonusu priest was in his 30s in 67 so that makes him around 76. The EK lad would be late 50s early sixties.

Its a no brainer all round Southampton get Vic for £12-5m ,I have no doubt they will eventually sell him on at a good profit.

Vic gets a very good wage and a chance to move to a champions league playing English, Spanish or Italian club sooner than later.

We make £11m + profit on a player who was bought to be sold at a profit after he helped us to league championship, Scottish cup and champions league last 16 success.

Over to John Part Neil Francis and the board to find the next Victor.

While we are stuck in Scotland that is unfortunately the way it has to be for now.

So good luck Vic and well done celtic

  17. On CQn this morning, I asked if Wanyama had been sold as a few posters were suggesting he had been. If a reply was posted confirming aforementioned `transfer` , I did not see it. Now, many hours later (after a tremendous round of golf at Carnoustie) , I see some posters commenting on Vic`s transfer. HAS HE BEEN SOLD?

You are right of course to take everything I say seriously, in which case you will not go too far wrong. BT or not BT that is the question! Think BT Vision may have offered Celtic TV or Setanta free a few years back, not sure now though. Not sure either if they are showing any SPFL Division one games or are restricted to Division three matches on a Friday night. Sky Sports will probably show all the televised Celtic matches, starting with the much discussed 5.15 kickoff for the League Flag day. Let us see what BT brings to the party, but no matter how much money they put in chances are we won’t see much of it.

Positive…..my brother who knew Fr Chambers when he was PP at Our Lady of Good Counsel , still keeps in touch with him.

  23. Big vic – a shame but take that 12.5 million NOW.

I give it 2 years tops before the sky bubble deflates at an exponential rate as BT FINALLY realise the market value of the lines they’ve always rented out to IP providers and flood the consmuer arena with their own product.

38 EPL games for this coming season, a main sports package; they just need their own 24-hour ‘BT Sports News’ and eventually everyone will wake up to the future – no need for Sky dishes or boxes; HD quality sports piped straight into your smart TV through the phone lines/wi-fi.

As per MLB TV, the baseball U.S saturation – a marvellous business model hooking in 70 million+ subscribers every year. Somebody at BT got the smarts.

BT will strangle Sky out the market. The EPL will undergo massive revenue shifts, we will be delighted to have scooped 12.5 million for a relatively unknown young African international player.

They wouldn’t have chosen a 5.15 KO if Jobo wasn’t on holiday.

One way of letting them know that it is an unsuitable time, would be not to turn up.

Show solidarity with fellow ST holders whofind it logistically impossible to attend.

I’m a season ticket holder and will get to very few games if they are routinely re-scheduled for 5:15. I work Sunday’s so staying over isn’t an option. As you say, the Club have my money so it won’t matter if I don’t turn up. At least that’s how I feel, paying fans come second to armchair fans.

I’ve emailed the Club to register my disappointment at the kick off time and can only hope that this is a one off. If not, I’ll be lucky to make 4 or 5 games this season. Needless to say if that’s the case, I won’t be renewing next season.

    No bhoycotts though !!!

  25. In Ireland Sky are showing 50% of the televised SPL Games and Premier Sports are showing the other 50%. They are also sharing the Hun games. Premier is replacing the old Setanta Sports Channels and is also offering BT Sports & ESPN as part of its package. BT Sports has apparently bought ESPN. In Ireland the old ESPN will no longer be free with Sky Sports Package, not sure what the story is with the UK.

  26. Why are so many posters excited about us making profits

  30. derbyshire bhoy,

I was thinking today, after I mentioned the farming out should be to a club like Crewe Alexandra (and certainly not to any Scottish club) that a team in Belgium would be my preferred option. I have a vague notion that we had some tie up with a team there a couple of years ago.If not, we should establish one as quickly as possible.

Having said that, your idea of buying a team in England and entering it into whatever league we can should also be explored asap.

  31. Sad to see Victor go, if indeed he does go.

But 12.5 million is a decent price for a guy who undoubtedly has potential (viz, Barcelona home and away), but who is certainly not the finished article (numerous SPL games last year).

However, the real scandal for me is that Southampton are buying him. A club which is little more than a financial basket case, and is an advert for living beyond your means and plunging in and out of administration.

Southampton have about 13,000 diehard fans, making them about the size of Aberdeen. Unlike Aberdeen however, they have never achieved anything beyond their own shores and have never looked like achieving anything.

They are famous for having Matt Le Tissier as a former player: and that’s about it.

They exist purely to sook up Sky TV money and if this tap is even tightened a little, they are screwed again.

Good luck to Victor: a model professional in his time at Celtic. But I seriously hope he knows what he is doing here, otherwise he is in danger of sinking without trace at a club famous for non-achievement and scarred by financial decreptitude.

  32. PF

Always gets me as well, that one – you’d think the money was going into supporters own bank accounts.

In Gary Hooper’s case we’ve not even had an acceptable bid, despite daily predictions he was ‘away’ since long before January.

In the case of Victor Wanyama the club obviously want to sell, and we’d be mad not to, but it’s quite sad regardless of the wonderfulness of the EPL, that Southampton are his only suitors.

Southampton struggle in that league week in week out, and have done since they returned to the EPL, and Victor is taking a gamble on the money IMHO.
