Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj. Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.
Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.
Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling. Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival. Ouch. Made me feel a little better.

@ASonOfDan
It would be easy to scoff (oh go on then) but I reckon he may make an excellent defensive midfielder.

I have always thought Efe was brought in to replace Victor.
I agree with you but he will need to improve his ball retention and cut out any silly mistakes in front of his back four.

Exclusive: Efe Ambrose has been informed by Celtic coach he’s moving to midfield this coming season.
Would signing midfielder be too much to ask?
Can anyone advise of a decent bar in Alcudia, Majorca to watch both legs of the Cliftonville game?
I should have anticipated Champions League in the Glasgow Fair
A son of Dan. I think Ambrose may do very well in midfield and the odd time he switches off may well not be so costly. The big guy is very skillfull and may surprise us all.H.H.

We need an inventive midfielder.
Where are the Lubos?
googybhoy ♥ celtic
He has looked class playing for Nigeria as a right sided player. Never a CH in a million years.
Maybe, the further up the park Efe goes……..The bigger the chance of a couple of the ole’ sommersaults.

Ledley, Brown, Kayal, Commons, Rogic, Forrest, Ambrose. A bit crowded in there already….
Only one player is beyond the reach of the epl, and we all know who that is..
Even the super rich Italian clubs of mid 60s to mid 70s never had the financial stranglehold the epl now has, even with the odd corruption here and there. Speaking of corrupt Football clubs, thats another story.

The problem re changing kick-off times is that some supporters will have made their travel arrangements, trains and boats and planes, (there is a song in there somewhere) based on the previously published times. I do not personally like 12.15 – 12.45 kickoffs, even in Glasgow. I do not mind the 5.15 kick-off on a Saturday but draw the line at being on the 5.15 train. I would like to see a big European match at Celtic Park on a Saturday evening, but that is not on offer at the moment, the Staggies are though. At least it is a Saturday, in the summer, and the league flag is going to fly, can’t be all bad.

Commons & Forrest are forwards, very rarely do you see either of them in our preferred middle 3. Ambrose is a defender. If Victor goes we only have Brown, Ledley, Kayal & Rogic, 4 players for 3 places unless we continue with our defenders in midfield policy and use Mulgrew & Ambrose there.
As googybhoy said, oh for a creative midfielder.

Taxi will cost you closer to £30. You will be in Belfast City Centre 30 mins later.
I reckon alarm bells are already ringing in Nyon.
Its one thing Scotlands best player ( from one of the worlds biggest clubs) going to Southampton, or PSV and Ajax top stars being bought by Arsenal and Liverpool.
But the real megabucks kicks in this season down there, and dont write off a German or Italian international ending up at Swansea or Stoke, That’s when Platini and co will act. How they deal with it is problem.

The plus side of St. Alphonsus was a 25 minute mass at 6pm on Sunday – Tommy Burns and family were regulars at it.
The minus side. Fr Chambers the priest there mid to late eighties was a fully fledged hun. Could never fathom it out.

TCC-That wouldn’t be Fr Chambers with the porsche and the Ray Bans ?
got this from twitter…..
Wanyama bought for 900k & sold for 12.5M after 77 games. 11.6M profit means his value increased by more than 150K EVERY MATCH
victor and hooper will be off, we’ll pocket 17 million or there abouts, I reckon lenny will get about 5 million for a couple of players and he’ll already have them identified. cant say I am overly concerned, so long as we keep finding new young players and there are always good young players if you look hard enough.
I loath to think we would allow quality players to walk away under freedom of contract. if we sell we can replace the player with another, if we don’t sell the only one’s to lose are us.
I could get used to this type of transfer model, without much difficult, but only if the club is using the money made to progress the club further i.e. player recruitment and on business/ structure, stadium, pricing etc… and not just handing it over to shareholders.
hail hail
Southampton FC
I always liked them in the Le Tissier days, i thought Lawrie McMenemy was a class act , and i admired the way they tried to play the game…..
and then, they turned out to be much like their near neighbors at Portsmouth and most of he rest of English Football below the top 8 . A financial basket case who have been in and out of administration , who have played fast and loose with any aspect of financial fair play, and who have effectively bought their way back to the Premiership, using money they didn’t generate through their own efforts.
Let me share some numbers .
They have lost £54.1 million in the 4 years to June 2012. Those losses were wracked up against a turnover of £57 million during those years.
Thats quite a staggering level of financial mismanagement. However thats not all, in the most recent year on record their wages/turnover ratio was 128%. Just think about that for a moment in relation to clubs, like ours, who behave responsibly and live within their means.
And just so its clear, they are also £33 million balance sheet insolvent.
Southampton are in the David Murray league of financial stupidity. Now they may well make a profit in the EPL, we don’t know yet. However , based on their behaviour to date, and based on their spending recently , they may very well continue as a financial basket case.
Southampton have a parent company, who have a negative net worth of £48.9 million and total liabilities of £75.6 million. So no comfort there.
Effectively they are dependent on a very wealthy owner, or were as he died in 2010, although it appears his estate continues financial support. My problem with clubs like this , is that they poison the market, and almost inevitably they ultimately fail. Southampton will never be an Arsenal or a Man Utd, they are a small city team with a support who couldnt fill a 30,000 seater stadium.
What they do, is create hyper inflation in wages , which ultimately will be their undoing. In the meantime Celtic should happily take their money, and continue with our policy of value. Victor can join a small colony of ex Celts in Danny Fox and Jos Hooiveld, who failed at Celtic and Artur who saw his career zenith at Celtic in November 2006 as he helped us into the last 16 of the Champions League.
Victor wll never play in the Champions League at Southampton, however he has been a credit to himself and his family whilst at Celtic. I wish him well.

Very same Priest, he was alright was Fr. Joe
Sadly Passed away couple of years back
Barcabhoy
Many thanks for that info.
I thought Victor would be a target for a club at the level perhaps of Everton.
I note a lot of discussion regarding how best to bring on our young players and give them the tools to make integration into the first team pool a more natural thing. Several have suggested farming out players on loan which without doubt must be beneficial when compared with odd spells here and there and odd game time when leagues are won etc.if they remain at Celtic Park.
It is frustrating that it is almost ten years ago that I found myself suggesting that Celtic’s aims could be satisfied on several fronts by buying /establishing a club in the lower reaches of the English League system. The club would have a clear identity with Celtic and have Celtic in the name but have a structure separate enough to satisfy any regulations restricting ownership. Not insurmountable I would have thought.
This could have provided I suggested a presence in England offering an outlet for those of us living there whilst making both fans and other clubs familiar with a Celtic presence in their leagues which I argued would in the long term make them more amenable to the Glasgow version operating in their structure. The English based club would provide an outlet for the development of players in a competitive environment more likely of providing a higher standard than farming out to Scottish Clubs would achieve.
I wonder what might have happened had we done something of that sort 10 years ago?
Che- mmmm not how he was remembered at St Gregory’s.
Southampton. I mean-Southampton. With £12.5M in their tail to buy a player. Southampton, yes Southampton- went to Glasgow celtic and took their best player. Whether they can afford him or not is academic.
Southampton, let me tell you this- we buy your best player- you don’t buy ours.
Or do you?
Fr Joe Chambers is alive and living in Ireland….never a hun….just an off beat sense of humour

Long long time ago he and I crossed swords, he struggled with my lack of faith, I struggled with him struggling with my lack of faith, lol even as a teenager i couldnt resist the opportunity to argue my case..many a cross word passed between us, I’m sure the Parishioners of The Greg have their reasons.
