Preseason pains

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

  1. GF did not approach last night’s game in any way other than to take the scalp of a major club.

That they did so was due to the effort that they put into the game, including some very meaty tackles.

Also the extensive use of fresh legs in the second half.

Not many years ago, we approached this kind of game in a similarmanner, only to fail

repeatedly when the real stuff began.

It is the injuries that most concern me.

On a brighter note, I’ve just had a pleasant visit from Ard Macha and his fine son.

He passes his best wishes to his fellow CQN associates.

  2. weeron,

It is a bit of a thing with me regarding Mc.Geoch.

I believe if he is to have any chance of a career with us, he must go on loan and play regular SPL football.

At the moment, I see him as Willo Flood, without the dig.

This must also happen with others who need to make the step up.

It used to be called, farmed out, which has a more positive sound to the practice.

Could anyone tell me of pubs in Glasgow city centre which will definitely be showing the Celtic – Union Berlin game on Friday.

    Thanks.

Totally agree, id love to atajic, george, and mcgeouch all loaned out this season.

Even for half a season and see how it goes.

  5. Reports that Wanyama has arrived in England and will have a medical tomorrow.

Southampton? deary me big man, gladly take the money for you right enough.

  6. If the young players are to have a career with us then surely they should playing SPFL matches in a Celtic jersey while we have a clear run at the title.

For many years, I have been of the view that we don’t know how to transition our 17/18 year olds into the top team.

We seem to be able to find the kids, play them through the development squad, etc. However, teaching them to play regularly in a pro team? Doesn’t seem to work often enough.

The two boys from Hamilton, McCarthy and MacArthur……I doubt they’d have made such good careers for them selves had they come through our set up. They’d never have got enough games.

Easy for me to say, I know….but, Tony Watt going to Tannadice on a year long loan…..would have made tons of sense.

  8. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

We get this trepidation every close season ….. We’ll be fine ……players got less of a break after a very pressurised season….just takes time to get back into stride, and the new bhoys will settle in by the time we get to th last 8 this season …..LOL

  9. I’m all in favour of our promising young bhoys being farmed out BUT only to the right club. For me, that means a team who teach young lhads to play in the right way. Dario Gradi had a great name with Crewe Alexandra but he has now retired. I certainly wouldn’t want them to go to any Scottish team. That would simply toughen them up not improve their footballing skills.

Ole Eddy Merckx used to get stoned when he was winnin’ the Tour, and the Giro, and the Vuelta..

  12. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

..by stoned I mean in the Biblical, not the Rastafarian sense.

Although Eddy did fail a couple of drug tests in the course of his illustrious career.

  13. parkheadcum…..,

I would have no problem with them going south, as long as they were reasonably assured of getting regular competitive football.

Bringing them in after the league hasbeen won is not practical.

For one thing, it is an ad hoc approach, as who can tell in advance when it wouldbe won.

Also, if the title was over, it wouldn’t be a competitive game, merely fulfilling fixture obligations.

Another, for me, important point would be to let these boys sample another playing environment, away from Celtic Park.

There is a suggestion that some youth players succumb to the glamour of being a Celtic player, before they reach the status of a TOP Celtic player.

The more I think about it, the more sense it makes to me that a Placement would be a beneficial component in their development.

I’d imagine the Admiral in Wellington Street would be showing it. They show all the Celtic games, and I watched the Cluj game in there on Sat.

Good food as well, and only a few minutes walk from Central Station.

  17. Now there is a spectrum of opinions re the Bavarian GolFest.

Most I can see the logic of even the doesn’t matter a jot brigade or this is a huge tragedy brigada. I’d tend to be more circumspect.

But one excuse I can’t see the logic to is the…

“They wanted it more than us.”

Many of the Celtic players had a lot to prove, had a CL team to get into, so why did the German players want it more than us???

  18. Kojo had a big spiel of how 2 penalties don’t count and one goal was offside, so we were only beaten 3-2 in Kojo mathematics. All very good except he forgot to mention that they hit the woodwork twice and carved us open 5 or 6 times in 2nd half and should have beaten us by 10 or 12 to 2, all after we were 1 up in 3 mins. Forget the scoreline we were beaten up and down a pole yesterday. I know we had a makeshift team but we were playing 2nd Division opponents and they were playing their full squad as well so no doubt they were as makeshift as us. Its over, it doesn’t count but lets at least be honest yesterday was an embarrassment for a Club of our fame and stature.

  19. Could Charlie Austin become our new John Hartson?

Similarities in that he has failed a medical with Hull, as JH did at the defunct club. Both Austin & his club will be on the backfoot now, and I think they might be keen to do business as that disappointment could be our opportunity. He has identical stats to Hooper at this stage of his career in Championship as well as scoring goals in a poorer performing team might be worth sneaky bid only just turned 24 so fits our new DNA policy. 41 goals in 82 matches, 28 in 40 last season and he missed a few games at end of season an appendix op. Like the look of this guy.

HT hope your not sharpening those studs Terry Hurlock style for tomorrow night!!!

  20. CSA only confirms my long held belief that painful though it may be, there are issues to be addressed by Scottish Football other than league reconstruction.

One of these is the game’s relationship with and dependence on television and its money.

Five fifteen on a Saturday evening is a joke and not a particularly good one.

Celtic are probably the only team who have no dependence on Sky money. Its a fraction of our turnover, dwarfed by gate receipts. But our board bend over backwards for Sky at the expense of their main source of income.

TV will always be good exposure for Celtic. It sells shirts. It also entices our sponsors who want to be seen on TV. TV will always be important.

It should not come before the fans but it is out of the clubs hands. I always feel any game on a Saturday is better than a Sunday. I would prefer a 5.15pm kick off to any time on a Sunday. Just my personal view. I know it doesn;t help people who travel from further afield though.

  26. I think the casual disregard we have and the ensuing defeats we suffer have a negative on the club.

We always look unprofessional and unprepared.

Why would any player be enticed to join us based on our preseason?

Unprepared in the random approach by merely selecting players and often out of position to make up the team.

    No apparent strategy or shape.
