Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

Big Vic67 the best player to grace Scottish football since Henrik.

Best wishes and I hope your next move is a good one, top tier CL potential winning side.

Big Vic was an enormous influence many times for Celtic but he was inspirational V Barca.

The best no 67 we have ever had.

As yet unfazed by per season but willing to scrape through any game until we have gained entry to Europe.

I remember standing in the Parkville, with BSR feeling a wee bit uncomfortable, during our Helsinki tie, until our mid second half strike lifted everyone’s spirits. If I recall correctly several CQNers were in and may have witnessed ole Harry of the Hood having to eloquently quietening down one or two of our junior members, prior to that goal.

Yep, realise all of that but when your core support is in a steady decline then ignoring what they want is madness. If 5.15 on a Saturday or 12.30 on a Sunday for home games increases (away games are already very rarely at 3pm on a Saturday) then people will vote with their feet.

Why can’t all games be at 3pm on a Saturday with one of the games live on TV? More supporters will go through the turnstile to support their team, not sit at home to watch TV game, and we still get the TV money. English games are never 3pm on a Saturday so we wouldn’t clash with them. Updated results (as per Soccer Saturday) could appear at bottom of screen. Better than watching Nicholas and his mates screaming like a bunch of lassies!!

who exactly is ignoring the core support? the club will have no say in this,so can only assume you are meaning the tv..

    Masty,

That sounds more like the City Airport (George Best) fare.

I think TT is looking for International Airport which is more like £20 each way.

“Airport Express 300 operates a 24 hour service between the airport and Belfast with buses departing every 15 minutes for the majority of the day on weekdays, with reduced frequencies at off peak times and weekends. The bus leaves from the bus stop located opposite the terminal exit.”

£ 10 return as guessed earlier

It still hurts to watch Celtic lose any match. 6-2 is a skelping. If this had been a Bayern Munich or a similar top side it could have been unacceptable. To me this is a very embarrassing result. I question the desire of certain players if they are happy to srug their shoulders and say it’s only pre-season. Fitness is one thing but we shouldn;t be 6 goals away from a 2nd class side like that. How many players played the whole match? They have been training together for years so changing personnel and positions has little bearing.

It was a very poor result and I would hope it would be the last. Winning breeds confidence. Cliftonville would have taken a lot of heart from that last night. The next match I would hope the defence is sorted. Leaking goals is a virus we could do without. Sort out the back and keep them out. We have enough quality to score goals in other areas and they will come.

Shipping 6 goals is not good for morale. Not many clubs will lose 6 in a pre-season match and play in the CL next week. I don’t know what happened but it needs fixed ASAP.

Travel on the Barrow-in-furness bus a 3pm we leave at 7.30am

back in Barrow around 9.00pm – 9.30pm depending on the piss & fag stops, gives you time to go to the pub for a few more beers. so it looks like 11.30pm 12.00pm arrival time.

The people who run our game (SPFL, SFA) are ignoring the wishes of the fans. Start times for TV is only one of many issues where they are not listening. Who said the customer is always right, apparently they are never right when it comes to Scottish football.

I think Celtic have listened to the fans through the survey. I certainly voted for Saturday games rather than a Sunday. The club can;t get it right down to the very minute details all the time but they have made massive strides this close season to benefit the fans in lots of ways.

Don;t get me started about the clowns who have run and do run our leagues though.

I had season tickets in the nineties even though I lived in London and could not go to every match.

Cant see why it puts last night in perspective?.

  15. I am really fed up! Celtic are in one of the top leagues in the world, in a country of at least 5 million people. They have huge TV deals with Sky and BT and all we can manage is the last 16 in Europe. If only Sydney “Tim’ was running the club. Just think of it that man’s CV alone would have the rest of the clubs in Europe running scared. PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION BELOW:

If you want Sydney “Tim” to be given sole control of Celtic sign here…………………..

Please sign before some other club snatches him away!!!!!!!!!

  16. Vic’s move to Southampton is a huge retrograde step regardless of them playing in the EPL ,for 1 season at least. Could be the ruination of the young bhoys footballing dreams. Cash over sense has ruled the day. Another season or 2 at Celtic and he could have cemented his reputation as an outstanding European player and the big clubs would have been lining up. Now all that awaits is ,potentially,a season of playing negative, avoid the drop at all costs, football. Could be wrong but I think Vic may just be making the worst possible move. The fact that none of the big clubs were interested enough to make enquiries and given the 12.5 mill is loose change transfer wise to the EPL and European footballing ‘elite’ speak volumes of how they view Wanyama.

From a Celtic FC perspective if reports relating to an agreed transfer deal of 12.5 million are true hopefully NL will get a decent percentage to spend on a ‘tried and tested’ creative midfielder. No more works in progress for the time being please.

A Son of Dan. I can remember when it used to be said Celtic dont play friendlys so things certainly appear to have changed.Last season in certain games Neil Lennon spoke about the lack of drive from our team the players havnt changed and there are still doubts about the application of a few of them.I just hope that Neil and his staff can turn it around sooner rather than later.H.H.

  20. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

    England 215 all out.

Not the start to the series many had predicted.

  21. Why would any Celtic fan be concerned what team Wanyama ends up up playing for.He wants to leave Celtic and play in England get the best price possible.

  22. Fed up that the first league game has a 5.15 kick off. Can’t go as a group of friends arranged a night out in Edinburgh ages ago assuming an early kick off.

Also a bit disappointed about our pre-season. Pre-season results generally mean little, but the lack of motivation in some games is a worry.

Last season it was deemed OK for the players not to be up for certain league games if they were near CL matches.

A ridiculous situation when you consider that they were appearing for the club with the most resources in the country.

I have pals in Ireland who booked flights and boats from Ireland and watched half hearted league games where the players were given the excuse of “a big european game coming up”.

We shouldn’t worry much about pre-season as long as the lethargy and poor attitude stop when the competitive games start.

Having been there, I agree mate! I’ve come to expect poor results in pre-season games. It’s the point in the season where crazy experiments happen. Though, as Livibhoy says, Celtic shipping 6 goals to anybody is always going to make you wince and you do wonder if there is any effect on team morale. However, in Lenny We Trust!

For me it is about hoping that all players who leave Celtic flourish and progress albeit the majority who leave do not, a few honourable obvious exceptions apart. Also Vic doing well reflects well on us the Club and league.

  26. They wouldn’t have chosen a 5.15 KO if Jobo wasn’t on holiday.

One way of letting them know that it is an unsuitable time, would be not to turn up.

It won’t hurt the club, as they already have the money.

  27. Oglath, it puts our league in perspective. I agree with an earlier post Vic is one of the best since Larsson, the good thing here is as follows:

We have broken the transfer ceiling and now £12.5m is the record in the SPL.

We have shown emerging talent abroad that we are now an option if they fancy the Premiership harsh facts of where we are.

Celtic can with a bit of luck punch above our weight, last 16 (only club to play qualifiers to make it) was a phenomenal feat given budget and standard of our league

£12.5M & £6m Ki, allows us the flexibility to decide who we keep etc and hopefully allows us to progress as a club, while the “sugar daddy” keeps his loose change in his pocket.

We have no right to qualify for group stages of CL or EL so we have to earn that and our job is much, much harder with pre qualifiers. With our new policy comes risk as we are never buying the finished article of a player and its with small changes that we move forward and try to replace Vic etc. What we can’t afford is mass sales of players and the revenue form CL & player sales above means that is less likely, our future is now in our hands.

  28. If Victor does indeed decide to join Southampton and CFC accept £12.5 million for him, then I ‘m afraid that the only reason why this would happen is money.

If he were to sign an improved contract extension with us and spend one more season with the club, he could have his pick of any number of top clubs in twelve months time.

…and CFC could trouser up to double what they are prepared to accept now.

    Imo, of course.

    HH!!

  29. Tallybhoy

It’s not about how much we get for Victor it’s how much the manager gets to stregthen the team. We could get £100m for him and if NFL gets nothing what does it matter?

I really hope Neil is given £6m to get an adequate replacement and another foreard who is proven at scoring goals at a decent level.

I doubt Neil will get £2m to buy any player.

The issue with doing well with a shoe string budget is that is expected all the time. When Rodgers gets the bullet at Liverpool I expect them to come North and get their man unless we give him decent funds to built a team.

The board need to support their manager or lose him. Pivitol time of the managerial career of Neil Lennon.
