Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

I like Southampton, although previous posters are right with the talk if fianancial mismanagement. They’ve produced and sold some amount if players over the years for massive profit but it all seems to disappear down a drain.

Ferguson said last year that it’s the best an away team had played at old Trafford for a long time so I hope pochettino(sp) can keep up the good work.

Why are so many posters excited about us making profits

    ———

We have been brainwashed that is why.

5/6 years ago we were given a lot of baloney about ‘playing in the EPL’ in five years,

Now the propaganda is about a great youth system and buying young players to sell on at a profit.

The reality is we are not particularly good at either, and only completely inept management by the majority of our competitors makes us look good.

At a world level, the EPL has cleverly milked growing demand for online content and sold the rights for vastly inflated fees, but, that won’t last forever, particularly with so many badly managed clubs.

I have a mixed view on our current Directors – versus the football peer group they have done well, but versus other PLCs , we are a slightly better version of HMV, struggling to cope with the digital world.

There will be lots of talk right now, about who we should buy post Wanyama.

Personally, I would go for Carlisle – the club, not the player, or Hartlepool.

Buy them for £4/5 m, and use the excess to pay the legal bill.

You are right of course to take everything I say seriously, in which case you will not go too far wrong. BT or not BT that is the question! Think BT Vision may have offered Celtic TV or Setanta free a few years back, not sure now though. Not sure either if they are showing any SPFL Division one games or are restricted to Division three matches on a Friday night. Sky Sports will probably show all the televised Celtic matches, starting with the much discussed 5.15 kickoff for the League Flag day. Let us see what BT brings to the party, but no matter how much money they put in chances are we won’t see much of it.

I was thinking about their effect on EPL now they are able to show a certain number of games. The Sky/EPL deal, apparently, is what is having an effect on SPL kick-off times. Agree that we will only get drip-down of cash from it. Mind you, £12.5M is a reasonable drip. Relatively speaking however it does not solve the problem. The EPL business model needs to break before we will be on a level playing field.

  12. I expect the profit will split between the Celtic triangle and a bumper dividend payout, exactly what supporters want to see on the park eh

I think you have introduce an interesting debate regarding our much flouted scouting network.

JP IMO has not unearthed as much talent as I think the support believe,in fact if we look closely at good buys against bad buys I don’t think he will come out of it too well

    ===================================

That’ll be the inept management by that Barcelona lot in allowing us to be the first team to defeat them last season some 3 months in on November 7th.

And of course eventully make it to the last 16 in the CL.

I’ll take that sort of ineptitude every season from our competitors until they wise up and give us the consistent poundings you’ll enjoy to back up your crazy conspiracy theories.

Then again, maybe my brainwashing will wear off – barring an Azrael Block – and I’ll see through the propaganda – allowing me to back up the proposition that spunking a few million on the purchase of a decrepit lower-league English mob then battling it out in court for a decade for the right to play in the Blue Square Premier is the sane option….

We have made good money on him, that is the nature of the beast, always was for sale at a profit if he performed, and he lived up to his end of the bargin.

The top clubs, in the financial sence will wait to see how he does week in week out against the best in the world….aye right, they will then happily pay way over the odds, and we should have a decent wedge winging our way again for nada.

As I said earlier, JP needs to get himsel over to Nigeria, there are diamonds to be had there for little money.

  18. Lazio, Genoa , Lecce and eight players,

including Lazio captain Stefan Mauri, will face

charges related to match-fixing, the Italian

    football federation said on Wednesday.

The federation said the charges include

rigging games and failing to report match-

fixing for two Serie A games – Lazio vs. Genoa

and Lecce vs. Lazio in May 2011.

The trial has been fixed for July 24.

Mauri faces a charge of sporting fraud, as do

    Mario Cassano, Carlo Gervasoni, Omar

    Milanetto, Alessandro Zamperini,

    Massimiliano Benassi, Antonio Rosati and

    Stefano Ferrario.

Mauri and Zamperini have also been cited for

violating two articles of the Code of Sports

Justice. That is concerned with the principles

of loyalty, fairness and integrity, and a ban on

    betting.

If the charges are proved, the players face

bans while the clubs could be deducted

points. Reports say prosecutor Stefano Palazzi

could ask for a five-year suspension for Mauri,

who is facing the most serious charges.

Last week, Serie B club Bari plea-bargained

    for a one-point penalty for match-fixing.

Bari was also fined 25,000 euros ($32,000)

under the deal made with the Italian

    federation’s disciplinary committee for

arranging two matches, while several former

    players also reached plea bargains.

At least 50 people have been arrested in Italy

    for match-fixing since mid-2011, with

matches under investigation by prosecutors in

    Cremona, Bari and Napoli.

This marks the third consecutive offseason

that point penalties have been handed out by

the federation. Four Serie A clubs were

    penalized last season

    Sandman,

We will need to agree to differ.

However, I would offer, that at the time CQN started, if we had taken the plunge and bought a Gretna ( whom I think were in the English league) or a Carlisle , then instead of Southampton buying our players , it would be the opposite.

If we want to grow as a club, we are going to have to be brave, and not wait for the perfect storm.

Debate is good. On what basis are you making your judgement on JP?

Personally I am not close to anyone at Celtic Park and therefore have neither enough information on JPs performance, nor indeed the criteria that are used to judge his performance, to make any definitive statement about his effectiveness or otherwise.

I’m guessing you both have clear criteria and stats to back up your view?

  32. CowieBhoy, didn’t think I would, just adding to the debate, another point of view.

I don’t know if Park personally does spot the players, but he is HoD.

Only after he leaves will we be able to judge whether he was responsible or not, and as I said to you, administrators who know their stuff can be invaluable.

Whether it is Park or not, the model seems to be working well.

    As for answering your question,

I honestly don’t have a clue. it would seem that 99% of what we have bought have come from euro clubs, so I doubt our scouting system reaches the leagues in darkest Nigeria.
