Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

Agree with that but if we are to progress their must be a step up from unknown players totally to adding a bit of quality from time to time and generally quality players cost a bit more.

What really is the point of making substantial profits if we continually speculate on young unknowns ?

Eventually it will catch up with us and we will start not qualifying for CL group stages and we won’t then have the option to invest.

In no way am I advocating speculating to accumulate but surely 2-3 quality players in the £3-4 m bracket is not beyond us.

I am not convinced that will happen though .

I know that any signing is a gamble be it £50k or £5m but you’ve more chance of success with the £5m guy surely ( unless your name is shoite!)

I like PL.Think he is the best CEO in Britain, but I thought your post was just a tad sychophantic.Well a lot more than a tad actually.”Go and complain to him face to face”!!!!!.Get a grip.

We need a playmaker. We will not improve the quality of our play until we get one in.Wether Lenny thinks this option a bit of a luxury, who knows, but talk of Kayal taking Vics place should give us a hint.Efe is a very good footballer, and very athletic. His only problem is,he cannot jump.A bit of a pre-requisite for a CH,you would think, but something our management team seemed to miss before sticking the boy in at CH.

    Bring on the Cliftonville.

  5. Maybe some of you might be able to clear up a few things about Vic’s departure.

If Vic is worth £15M or £20M and Peter Lawwell is supposedly a money (pocketing) grabbing crook (allegedly).

Then how come he is going for £12.5M at the very start of the transfer window to a non-CL team when it would obviously be to PL’s benefit to sell him at a later date.

Or is PL not really the sharp suited man after all.

Or maybe he isn’t the shyster that some posters make him out to be.

Did Vic have a release clause

Does anybody have any genuine info

  6. Burghbhoy,

yeah I agree decent investment in the team is needed, but most people seemed to be happy with our signings so far until our pre season results anyway, there’s no telling how these players will do until the serious stuff starts, I will be happy to reserve judgement until then, and until the transfer window shuts and our squad is complete

Thanks. I remember the crushing disappointments but it makes the great victories all the sweeter. For every AC Milan, there’s a Red Star Belgrade. And who would have dared to even think in 1994 that we would be enjoying such a spectacle at Sevco?

  8. canamalar1 22:25

No argument about being cheated re: past CL income (in Scotland) – the template for payment is set by UEFA – as to how/ why it was administered by the SFA should be subject of an investigation (in a court if I had my way).

The O.F. (never utter the words) was used in the context of Sky TV income. Pre-Premiership it was a marketable product – hence reflected share price value then.

Regrettably the late 90’s launch of the EPL (because we were not and were never likely to be part of) – almost wiped share value overnight.

I often use F1 analogies to compare where CFC are today (post 1967) – Ferrari are an icon (continuous) – Braun (re-invention of Mercedes) – Red Bull/ McLaren (marketing reinventions). Lotus/ Caterham are iconic but lack investment (share value) – can’t compete with the big boys – hence the disparity.

We compete (nobody can argue we are not iconic) – but in reality we are regularly at the rear of the grid when compared to teams that enjoy major investment (TV income).

    Hence our current share price.

I like your line of questioning – I hope it merits more than a shuffling of papers at the AGM or a ‘pregnant pause’ in proceedings!

    H!H!

I will reserve judgement on the 2 signings we’ve made until I see them in the flesh.

Have real concerns about our progress if we are effectively a feeder club for low ranking EPL clubs.

TBH the Vic move to Southampton really really bugs me that our best players can be enticed to crappy wee teams like that .

I don’t just fear for us but I fear for the whole game if our players can be enticed away to these no mark clubs

Just a bit annoyed with this coz we are the club of European champions, 9 in a row and a fan base of millions of Jock Stein, Caesar, Jinky and Henrik.

Who the hell are Southampton ?

  11. Burghbhoy, I am afraid that as soon as we received an acceptable offer for Vic he was for the offski, whether it was Southampton or anyone else made no difference to us, while the EPL is bankrolled by sky and rich owners they will be abke to plck the best players from wherever they like, money talks and few players these days seem interested in winning things at the expense of big bucks

  12. Shame victors off to a small club like Southampton, but £12.5m is a bid we couldn’t refuse.

I’m sure he’ll move on to a top 6 club within 2 years

    Best of luck Big Vic!

  13. cowiebhoy

Sheryl and anne were in the club sunday with the wee bhoy, but he is no wee!!!

couldn’t belive the size of him.

your post re jr etc tou are100% right imo.

  14. Burghbhoy, i think you have some good points there. My concern is that we never pressed home our advantage and signed Fletcher & McCarthy which we could have had for £3.75m maybe less. This led to 3 seasons where we played second fiddle and have seen both players head south. I hope that was the pain we had to endure to get to this point, with big vic going for a record fee then it would be interesting to see the figures since NFL took over in terms of incoming & outgoings (some of you guys are better at the figures & knowing what was spent). We have continuously been told that we will reinvest transfer fees and wages back into the team. With vic, mcgeady & ki all sold for a reputed £12.5m, £6m, £11.5m (McGeady so was quoted) that’s £30m for starters. We have had 2011/12 Europa Group (not sure but 5 home games £8m revenue estimated) & CL last 16 (worth £31m). Before we add season tickets, merchandising, advertising, sponsorship, TV etc.

By my reckoning if Hooper goes for £6m then we will have doubled our turnover for season 2012/13 which is phenomenal for any business. So i think that we have scope to push the boat out to get a player/s that excite the fans. We have done well to get to where we are but we need to push on and i don’t want complacency from the board in trousering the cash and showing a lack of ambition.

We need to be prudent, however dwindling season book holders (hopefully up on last year) we need to be putting an attractive team on the pitch. We shouldn’t be penny pinching with Hooper if we need him to stay, if Vic has gone to Southampton then hopefully we were in the position where we could have kept him, i don’t know. I am glad to have watched big vic but hope he has no regrets when he looks at his pay packet.

I thought this an interesting contribution to the debate from a KDS poster.

Missed the start of this thread but I am in the camp that Lawwell and the board should make it clear to the Celtic shareholders (not necessarily in a public forum) that they took an active decision not to go after the SFA. If they did indeed take that decision. I would hope that they did, and I would also hope that they have made the SFA aware that they were within their rights to go after them but for the good of Scottish Football they had decided not to. Nothing wrong in that.

There is also absolutely nothing wrong with making sure that Lawwell and co have not been complicit and have been acting in the interests of the club. Not sure why anyone would want to just ignore it and let things go. I’ve not been Lawwell’s biggest fan over the last 3-4 years but I do believe that he always tries to act in the best interests of the club. He may well do but we shouldn’t just accept that because he thinks he does, that he actually does.

Sure he will get to park the bus against Arsenal, Chelsea and the Manchester teams. Bit he will also have to face the likes of Newcastle, Sunderland, Hull and Stoke in a desperate scramble for draws to stave off relegation.

Will he get to play on the biggest stage of all?

Not only unlikely, well nigh impossible.

Will he get to play at home in front of 50 to 60k crowds?

No chance unless there are moonbeams in the offing.

IMHO we have sold Victor far too cheaply and he has acted like a magpie after the shiny shilling. (For the younger readers that is 5P)

He would have been better served to improve his football for a couple of years pitting his skills against the likes of Messi, Xavi and Lee McCulloch.

Then he could have made the the 20 million pound move to Barca, Real, Bayern or Juventus.
