Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

  1. Southampton are a decent team who will be up into mid table this coming season and not the relegation fodder that many think they’ll be. A good manager and the obligatory foreign money behind them will ensure a comfortable season ahead. A good stepping stone for Victor that should get him a move to a top 6 club in a season or two. Hope we have a good sell on clause, could be worth another few million to us.

  2. Maybe some of you critics of Peter Lawwell should ask for a one to one with him on how poorly you think he runs the club.

Be assured, the guy is no fool and will swat your arguments aside.

Criticise the man to his face why don’t you?

DD doesn’t suffer fools gladly and that’s why PL remains in his current post.

Of course it’s safe for you tp post meaningless criticism from afar. He shrugs you aside.

Many thanks. The old memory only copes with so much these days.

As stated trying to generate a Celtic debate, and the comments from some for JP to find a successor to Victor.

Fans and media seem to give credit for his finds.

As someone who goes and watches the team closely, I do not see many stars in the claimed JP finds

    My opinion

    Hail Hail

  6. I thought it was JP’s network, when we got him we also got his connections, no ?

  7. A change of topic ,,,,so Scottish Police Officers are to go to Belfast on the 12th to help out in the security of the OO bigot parades……….talk about a busman’s holiday!!!!!!

  8. EdB, for info, I also think highly of PL, but prepared to challenge where I see faults, and I think our success rate with signings has been questionable, hence questioning JP

Like me, you will have seen quick a few disappointments over past few seasons ? I could rhyme of 5 or 6 up front in past 3 seasons alone. And for £750k a few weeks ago we should have signed J Russell, proven in Scotland

    Hail Hail

  9. point 1 12.5 million is not loose change ,in the envinment we operate in, its a sizable amount.

point 2. If we have a sell on clause its better for us if he goes to a Club like Southampton as it may be a stepping stone to better things.

point3. As long as the profits are not siphoned off into fat cats pockets, having a surplus is good. If it goes into the Celtic Triangle thats fine by me, Improving our infrastructure and long term profitability is what will keep us ahead of the pack in Scotland.Obviously if Football structures change and the opportunity arises to play in a bigger League, the stronger our infrastructure and finances the better.

It is and always will be a balancing act to build our profitability and keep a winning team on the park. You cannot build a team to win the European Championship and live with the reality of playing in Scottish Football, Once upon a time a Club tried to do just that and now that Club is no more, wiped from the face of the earth.

  10. Doc

I didn’t include your good self in that scattergun post.

Perhaps I’m rambling here, not perhaps, but us old guys have seen our club in much worse condition than they are in now. Winning very little if anything year after year.

Some of our younger support appear to be brought up on success and haven’t learned to take the hard knocks of failure.

That needs to happen. We want to win every game in every competition otherwise we are crap in some “supporters eyes. Plain stupid and we must begin to get our heads around that.

Can’t disagree with your summation – posted more than a month ago that I expected V67 to go for circa £12M+ with hopefully a 20% sell-on clause – either that or £15M in ‘readies’ on the table.

Enjoyed his input to the Team – truth be told I would like to have seen him stay for at least another year. Where he goes now is no longer our worry – if we get a sell-on bonus ideal – meantime we reinvest in the next project.

This is all about the Celtic GDP – immediate consumption (the current Team on the park delivering) – investment in new assets/ replacing fixed assets (new players/ delivery via the Academy) – meantime utilising income (raised from sales) to finance/ improve the contracts of the core Team – those on the £2/4/6/8K (who we appreciate are here for the long-haul) per week.

Forget the CL income (that’s an intangible on the balance sheet) – we need to be looking at how we can market (sell) a project ever 12-18 months to sustain the current GDP Model.

Enjoy the likes of the V67s while they play for us (for most foreign players CFC will be a means-to-an-end) – hopefully we will land another gem.

Meantime the template will be tested – for every Ying there are likely to be more than a few Yang’s – e.g. Mo (the bounce), Lassad, Rogne, Kayal – even Izzy (his value has declined) etc.

Provided we continue to win titles/ trophies and compete in Europe (on a regular basis) – there is little else we can do till such times as ‘Planet Football (European Division)’ restructures and we get an invite to (what I would guess initially) – the 2nd tier of a new UEFA League.

Having followed CFC for 60 years – I hope around long enough to witness the European changes!

    :-)

  12. What’s gong to happen to the VW cash …bear in mind we made an unexpected fortune last season …we have no debt ….

When do we stop being obsessed with profit and start obsessing about team building

We have a CL qualifier next week and the team is a shambles …albeit a significant part of that is due to injury ….why sell VW when our other decent midfielders are injured …..particularly when he is to be sold to a team who are not in European competition

  13. EDB, fair doos mate.

CowieBhoy has a good point there, PL is doing a good job, but on points he should be picked up, when he gets it wrong.

We have had a few strikers in the last few seasons who haven’t worked out here, for many different reasons I’m sure, but that does not mean they are bad players.

There are lots of examples of players moving to one club, not making it, then moving on to success, Chris Sutton for example.

  14. bsr,

I still don’t think Mo was given a fair crack, as usual the gobshite experts had their minds made up after a couple of games then the dogs abuse was fired from the stands, a bit of encouragement might have made the difference, Henke recommended him, he’s still playing at a decent level as far as I know, so others see potential too.

Bangura is awful …having watched him a few times …he struggles to look like any kind of footballer

Agree, if being sold to Southampton, sell after qualifiers

    Hail Hail

  17. Vic is definitely a good one and I hate to see him go but as we all know football is a fickle business, players get injured and some lads are never the same afterwards. If Vic wanted to go then the Club did the right thing. However a good chunk of what we get needs to be reinvested into the playing staff.

  18. pfayr,

One of the backers to the proposed AGM resolution pointed out how much his shares have fallen since he bought them, he spent £500, now they are worth £87, not that that bothered him it is an emotional investment as it is with every supporter, but IMO it highlights exactly how well the club is being run, no ?

  19. canalamar

He certainly didn’t get a ‘run’ and some of the same “supporters” have already tarred Balde with the same Bangura brush.

For those that have never seen it BBC4 is re-running the Crow Road, at 10.30pm tonight, the series based on Iain Banks novel of the same name. Made a long time back, but well worth a look, or another look.

  21. pfayr,

The couple of times I saw him he had a couple of good touches but got stage fright like many, difference being some get stage fright but get encouragement from the support other’s get hunted

Thanks for that. Hopefully meet up with a few tims as young THBs only do football on a PS3 and ask daft questions to humour the old fella

  23. Celtic accepted a bid for Wanyama before we even knew who we we’re playing in the CL.

The “board” decided to sell, sell, sell (for massive profit) and stuff the CL

  24. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

Why is anyone fretting over where Victora has gone to? He is no longer a Celtic player so who cares. I wish him well for the future and thank him for his service and the sizeable transfer fee and handsome profit he has earned for us.

My only worry would have been if he had gone to a Scottish rival like Aberdeen or Hibs allowing him to hurt us but like us they can’t afford such transfer fees so he has gone to a team where he can’t cause us any harm in competition and if we have inserted a sell on fee in his contract then what’s not to like.

  25. Canamalar

I just do not get why PL gets lauded

He sells players ours bring in …he profits from CL participation

With no domestic competition and good scouting by others …his job doesn’t seem overly difficult

  26. I am happy with the way celtic conducts her business and I don’t particularly care for the EPL and all its money. what people ought to remember is EPL clubs make football players very rich. if EPL clubs worked within budget, they would not be paying half of money they do and that will be addressed or they will go bust, is the bottom line.

celtic is debt free and after the victor and hooper sale will be cash rich, some money will be spent on the celtic triangle, on player recruitment and a small group of shareholders will get a couple of million.

I hope celtic continue to bring young players in who get us into the champions league group stage, I hope we sell those players when the right bids come in, I hope we then go out and developed and diversify the celtic business, building on the pitch and off the pitch. btw, I would love for celtic to to build the museum, café, superstore, ticket office, sports bar and restaurant, food outlets hotel office space to rent, supporters barn etc… outside the immediate celtic park area.

I would like to see celtic build a country hotel at the lennoxtown complex and have gym, swimming, sauna, tennis courts, spa etc… maybe a hotel/ bar etc… in Ireland etc… with same similar type facilities etc… all geared towards making celtic fc money towards making more money so we can afford to buy and hold onto players.

we may not be able to compete with the largest clubs in the largest leagues, but with the right direction we could compete with the lower/ mid table clubs in these league as we have global appeal, lacking in all but 3 or 4 EPL clubs.

long term we are in a better position than most EPL clubs and if we do what I have suggested we will only get stronger. think about the MON years, yes we had a good team for 4 years but the cuts had to come and did.

  27. Just a quick word or to before I have to slink off.

    1) Criticism of Celtic on here is valid enough (but unnecessary as the MSSM do quite enough without any help from us). Also, occasional criticism is fine (ish) but constantly berating our Club is surely not a helpful contribution?

    2) I agree with PF. The finances of the Club are important . They are also fine so why are so many of us so interested , obsessed even (!), with them.

Early tee off time in The Arbroath Seniors Open tomorrow so it`s a good night from me. Good night.
