Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

Whats the odds the royals have a boy on the 12th and called it billy?

It’s a girl. Is that not why the recent law ending exclusively male royal succession was passed? Call me a cynic…

  6. GG and others….

I am sad that Vic is going….but not having a fit about it. Why? Well, it was on the cards, if not inevitable.

We signed a very good young player. He turned out better than many suspected. Fairly early on, we offered him a sizeable pay raise if he signed an extension. He declined. From that point on, it was clear that he was heading down south.

This summer, we have an early start, and some of our players have been busy on international duty. Almost the perfect storm. Two top players heading out the door, others coming back late. Mathews, Ledley and Brown can’t be counted on due to fitness issues.

So, we make 2 early signings (very unlike us), and we hope the inevitable happens quickly. It didn’t. Seems we haven’t had an acceptable offer for Hooper, and Vic’s went belly up for a few weeks.

Without these sales, it was difficult to move on replacements. The other fly in the jar was Stokes rejecting our offer, even though the signs and sounds had been good.

So, or management team have been dealing with a number of unknowns.

Even though we will have the Vic money, this won’t impact on the team until at least the next qualifying round. An early sale might have allowed Neil to make his moves.

So, that’s the situation. The good news is, at least we hold some of the cards. Hooper and Stokes can both walk next summer. Usually when players know they are walking in June, they start winding down at Christmas. Not an ideal situation.

Selling clubs with decent players sometimes are willing to wait and see if they can get silly money at the end of the window. We should be looking at players in the same circumstances as Stokes and Hooper. A year left. Pretty soon they can walk for nothing. Their clubs might be happy to get something back on them.

That being said, I know nothing. Neither do most. Just think we are in better shape than most, in that we have control over much of what happens to us.

    Just by farthings worth……

  7. Auldheid 23:27

For what it’s worth – I have been fortunate enough to have had several chats with PL over the past few years; informative, interesting, attentive but guarded.

I don’t expect any thing less – he has his opinions but is ‘curtailed’ (governed) by Company Policy (CFC) – pointless him sounding-off to all and sundry.

Have no doubts that he (and the Board) have as much knowledge (opinion) of current football affairs (shenanigans) than the collective sum of what we all know.

Problem is – presenting them as a Fait Accompli .v. destroying the Citadel?

should have held out for a top club, he might make transfer fees in the future, but he wont realise his potential.

its all horse trading, and celtic just cashed in, and vic became an also ran , he wont shine at his new club.

Celebrated my grandson”s birthday tonight. Haven”t been on all day. But, reading back, I can see the usual condemnation of our great Institution. I can also see the support for the Board in what they are trying ti achieve. Personally, at the risk of being a happy clapper, I love Celtic and will follow them through whatever anyone throws at us, and I remember when times were so tough for me when I could not afford to go to watch my beloved team. Now I can live my dream, I can assure all the detractors out there, I will enjoy my ST to the full. COYBIG.

  21. I think Samaras will go on a Messi like scoring run next season and hit a cool 37 goals.

I think Ambrose will be mega in midfield.

I think if Forster stays injury free for the whole season he will smash the £25m mark and move to Engerland.

I think as was the case the last 2 years our biggest players will be Sami Chas and Broony.

I think Lenny will spend the most he has spent yet on a player next week. I think it will be an Eyal Berkovic type.

Izzaguire and Ledley to have fantastic seasons and Virgil Van will be the quickest settling centre half we have ever had and will be capped and might make the WC squad.

The atmosphere at Paradise next season will be celebrational at every game.

However- we need to sort this team bus carry-on out.

Your team bus defines you these days. There’s another Glasgow club have got an oven and a lap-dancing pole in their bus and our players sit as though they are off to a tour of the West Coast or somewhere.

    Sort it out Celtic.

Thanks. My dear departed dad used to often say whilst we were driving back from one of those amazing European nights having put to the sword say Benfica or Fiorentina how great it would be to see the huns win the 2nd division. (There were only 2 divisions then.) Well, dad, look at them now. HH

  28. Guys, down in Lisbon just now for work, fab place.

Went a run in my hoops top, started bouncing proudly until the heat got to me! And today was cool by all accounts. So if you saw a fat wee guy in the hoops around Lisbon, that was me!

Anyway onto footy couple of points:

Been back and forward from here over the last year or so, so have my contacts now who we long discuss footy.

General consensus is that Balde will be a star of the future, is young, but loads of potential. In the right team with right support he will develop well. Interesting comment was that it was good that he left Portugal because the fans very high expectations of a young prospect often ruin the guys development here! Sounds familiar

Also my boss is a massive Dutch football fan and he is very surprised we landed van Dijk

Apparently he is a real classy player who he reckons should have joined a stronger league!

So not all doom and gloom perhaps?

Sad to see vic leave, but one season does not make a legend or even hero. Next season he could fall away like many others. So correct to cash in, it’s the model we watches PSV et al do with envy.

Lastly I see Chelsea have taken young Feruz with their first team pre season tour. Hope he makes it and sticks with Scotland.

    Obrigado boa noite
