Preseason pains

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

McCoist said: “I think like every Rangers supporter, they are delighted that Walter is back at the club.

“There’s a massive degree of confidence within the support with him being there, which understandable and absolutely correct.”

I got it wrong and was then given the answer and as always it was then blatantly obvious.

  3. I’ve noticed of late a distinction being made between Celtic The Club and CelticPLC with support for the former and criticism of the latter.

Now this language may have been necessary to avoid cognitive dissonance but the distinction is one our soo side rivals have embraced with alacrity to justify their argument that it was the PLC equivalent that was liquidated and not Rangers.

Do we really believe that or have we always thought the club and company are the same? If so then why is the distinction being applied to Celtic?

The fact is the actions of the non football part of a club affect the football part and vice versa.

The interaction is so interdependent it is impossible to say where one starts and the other ends, so impossible we only make the distinction to avoid our emotions having an internal argument with our reason.

There is only Celtic, lock stock and barrel and whilst language pushes us to talk in separation terms, just be aware that language evolves, lest we find ourselves talking about the club and the holding company or is that language truly a reflection of our inner thinking?

  4. “Southampton will take their spending on transfer fees since returning to the Premier League past the £50m mark if they sign Celtic’s Victor Wanyama”.

Absolute madness. A wee team like Southampton can spend that amount of money on players and that is before you add the cost of wages and bonus payments on top of that amount. I don’t understand how that is sustainable given their fan base even with TV revenue. Will they be another QPR – spend, big fail big?

Really puts modern football into perspective. A small regional club from England can out spend 50mill on players while we are forced to look around the football equivalent of a car boot sale hoping to find an overlooked ‘ valuable wee trinket’ that we can sell on at a profit.

Changed days indeed. It wasn’t that long ago that coming to play for Celtic would have been the pinnacle of a footballers career. Now we are merely a shop window for players. I know that this is the reality of the football environment we operate in but it still annoys the c**p out of me.

  9. Will be sad to see Big Vic go, but what a brilliant piece of business from the club, much of which will find it’s way back into spending on the team.

From our point of view, I would’ve thought that any sell on clauses would have a better chance of success by the big man going to a club like Southampton compared to an Aresenal/Liverpool etc

I disagree with your last post. It is easy to departmentalise Celtic. Otherwise every one of the circa 400 employees should all be on PL’s wages. Commercial Dept., Football Dept.,Ticketing Dept., Merchandising Dept., Charity Dept., etc. When the team play badly nobody lays into the ticket office and conversely, when the ticket office screws up nobody lays into the players. Very simplistic I know but it easy in my mind at least to differentiate between the various accountabilities.

  11. A Stor Mo Chroi on

Or put it another way Auldheid, is the PLC there to look after the football team’s success as their number one priority, or is the football team there to look after the PLC’s share price as it number one priority?

People are going to have different opinions and such is football and the football supporter too.

  15. Interesting open letter from mr Murray, he talks of the need for corporate governance and transparency, of shadowy figures and the inability of the company to pay a 6 figure electricity bill, are these new issues or did they in fact happen under his watch as chairman?

Sevconians can sleep easy though cos Walters at the helm and we all know he does not do walking away… Or does he?

    Time will tell.

The company will surely have to issue some form of reply, even if its just to appease the “institutional investors” the coming days will no doubt see further character assassination of the previous chair and glorification of the current.

As for the follow follow brigade, your inaction as all of this unfolded means you deserve what’s coming your way.

    Again.

Sell your shares quickly before they become as financially worthwhile as the last ones.

    Auldheid:

The club is one in name only, within the club there are different employees, from different departments, screaming for a bigger slice of the pie. (rightly or wrongly) There are the bean Rottweilers who see the dividend as sacrosanct. (rightly or wrongly) You have so many conflicting interests within the club at play, but do I see it as two separate entities… no I don’t I see it as one with the team the heart and the supporters the soul; the book-keepers and the PLC, well they can be whatever they want to be as long as we put a decent team onto the field capable of at least competing in every competition we enter.

I’ll take a guess and say nine out of ten supporters don’t want to hear about the board and the dividend, and how much money we’ve got more in the bank than the new-huns; they want to hear how their investment into the club is being reinvested into the club by the PLC. Without the football team there would be no PLC; yet without a PLC there would always be a hugely and globally supported team.

They are one but they are not the same.

Hopeful/hopefully must be the new absolutely?

“It’s time now for everybody within the club to start singing from the same hymn sheet and move the club forward,” McCoist said.

“And I’m very, very hopeful that will be the case. Hopefully in time for the start of the season.”

  20. Spartak Moscow have put Aiden up for sale (or as the Daily Express headline reads: “Glasgow-born Republic of Ireland international put on transfer market”). If there is any chance that we could negotiate a cut-price deal to bring him back to Parkhead that would be amazing.

Aiden was one of the few highlights of WGS’ last season and Tony Mowbray’s only season. He brings pace and trickery and a bit of work on his end product could give us the creativity we could really use right now. Wages and transfer fee could be a problem but, if rumours are to be believed, he has told Lenny that he is desperate to copme home. That might work in our favour. Wishful thinking I know but it’s better than thinking about us signing Kevin Doyle!

    Comedy gold

ALLY McCOIST last night insisted he’s at ease with boardroom changes now that Walter Smith is in place as Rangers chairman. The Ibrox club announced on Tuesday that businessman James Easdale had taken a place on the board as a non-executive director to replace former chairman Malcolm Murray and Phil Cartmell.

After two years of turmoil and boardroom in-fighting it’s understandable if Rangers fans are anxious about any shift in boardroom power.

But speaking after his team’s 1-0 win at Elgin City, McCoist admitted the fact legendary gaffer Smith has a handle on events should calm a lot of fears.

McCoist said: “I think like every Rangers supporter, they are delighted that Walter is back at the club.

“There’s a massive degree of confidence within the support with him being there, which understandable and absolutely correct.

“It doesn’t really effect me, at least not at the moment. It’s the results on the pitch that will effect me to be honest and that is all you can ask for.

“We just want as much stability as we can get and as soon as possible.

“I will find out more about it when I get down the road because I don’t know enough about what is going on. It might sound crazy but we have been cocooned up here in Brora, which might not be a bad thing.”

  28. Morning all. Glorious weather once again down here. Long may it last. People are going around with big smiles on their faces.

Are there are such beings on CQN today or is it still gloom and doom. While I did not enjoy the game the other evening one wee bit, I’ve suffered a lot worse as a Celtic supporter over the years.

Let’s all take a step back and appreciate that these are great times to be a Celtic supporter. Our fathers and grandfathers (as my own continually reminds me) could never even have imagined what we are enjoying now.

  29. For the life of me I cannot grasp why some supporters have such angst over where any of our departing players subsequently ply their trade.

Wanyama isn’t anywhere near good enough to play for any of the top 4 clubs in the EPL in my opinion though this may change in time.

If he leaves if really doesn’t matter where he goes.

  30. PCS.

In jobos absence I can co fitm that it is warm but overcast in the Blantyre/EK area.

This maybe the reason for the gloom around the Glasgow area…

It will of course clear up later on..

  31. Hail Hail to all this fine morning. Best wishes to Miki67 hope you have a good day sir and to all CQN’ers suffering in mind & body. Haven’t scrolled back but hopefully Jackie Mac has had positive news on his results and lightening the mood a little hopefully starry has lost a bit of weight, not that he was very heavy to start with.

The fact that no one else came in for him is proof positive that the big teams think he is still a work in progress, the Wanyama fever was up here mostly..

A young player who wants to play in a better league, Celtic or not we can’t say the SPL is good, look at Braga, they knocked us out of Europe and went on a great run, can you imagine Motherwell or St Johnstone doing that, naw me neither.

I was talking to some Dortmund fans last night and one of them asked me why Celtic didn’t play in England and before I could answer the other one said ” would we take Ajax in our league?” The other one ” aye right enough” They gave me a bit of gip for our defeat against GF, the leagues worst team they said, but you are Celtic how could this happen.

    Good crack the Dortmund Bhoys..
