Preseason pains

733

Results in preseason friendlies are (fortunately) notoriously unreliable indicators of results in competitive games, but Celtic will be alarmed at the scale of the deficit against Greuther Fuerth, from the German second tier, especially after reversals against Sevastopol and Cluj.  Clubs from Ukraine, Romania and Germany are apparently organised, even during the summer months.

Next week’s game against Cliftonville is Celtic’s first test, but they will come thick and fast from now on.

Losing a friendly 6-2 brought an unwelcome feeling.  Then I wondered how it would have felt to lose a competitive game by the same score to a major rival.  Ouch.  Made me feel a little better.

“For the life of me I cannot grasp why some supporters have such angst over where any of our departing players subsequently ply their trade.”

Aye. It is a strange one right enough.

Almost on a par with folk saying any of our successful signings didn’t do the business at another club.

I do reckon Wanyama can play at a higher level though, and I also think Celtic should have held out for more cash. But £12.5m (presumably with the ole add-ons) is excellent business just the same.

Good luck to Victor if he does leave – regardless of where he ends up.

Victor has been a really good player for us but I don’t think any more than that. Yes he has great potential but for a guy we signed for less than £1m I’d be delighted to get £12.5m for him.

I do think that a sell on clause should be an important part of the deal however.

Always liked Aiden, but doesn’t score or assist enough in goals department for all his industry, more a go to for pressure relief, and sorry to say hes to old now for sell on value, another faddy can be great to watch, but unfortunately doesn’t always give an end product, both great footballers but sporadic, can both grab the game by scruff of the neck at times but can also be posted missing on other occasions?

  4. What about the money Bob Kelly took from the world club championship matches. ?

Hoping to have news of another q&a on 19th July. ..

Can’t agree with part of your analysis of Aiden. It’s often with the benefit of hindsight that we fully appreciate the value of a player.

I agree that he didn’t score enough goals, and indeed he could be wasteful and unbelievably frustrating, but when you watch back to games he played in it’s incredible the number of times he played an integral part in Celtic goals.

  6. Malcolm’s open letter causing consternation and confusion on FF:

“As expected, the letter is far too cryptic. The time for innuendo is long gone and its high time a spade was called a shovel. By that i mean names with facts as to what they are doing or have already done. Its criminal the support have so little fact to go on. I am not alone in being sick fed up of this nonsense and sadly there doesn’t seem any end to it.”

    ——

“It’s not enough. He has to tell us Cluedo style, that it was Charles Green, in the Blue Room, with a Mongolian Bank account, or he won’t be considered plausible.”

    ——

“Which is exactly Murray should ditch the innuendo and spell it out in big letters. A lot of our support won’t read between the lines.

What is between the lines though?

Have Celtc once again got people into Ibrox and are going to try and kill us again? What?

And what exactly have the ordinary supporters got to do?

    Not buy tickets? Merchandise? What?

And no doubt if anything does go wrong we will have the posters telling us we were warned and did nothing ala AJ! *** are we meant to do?”

    ——

“Here’s the deal Malcolm – guys like me don’t know what the **** you’re getting at and if I “need to be listened to” I need first to be talked to, not spoken over.

Multiply me by 50,000 or 100,000 and you have an army waiting for the call to arms. An army that will unite on a single issue if it’s provable truth.

    Get it?

For **** sake somebody, anybody, lead the ******* fans.”

An army that will unite in calling a spade a shovel!

  7. Anybody think, we might get Aiden back on the cheap and the wee man will hold tight till contract runs out?

On another note with Vic gone i think we need to replace him with simiar. Big miss in the midfield with his presence and power.

Surley, JP and the scouts have somebody lined up.

If Hooper goes then another striker required as well plus the left sided player the manger wants.

Give the success of the swedish boys we had, Larsson, Mjallby, Lusitg i reckon Behrang Safri will be worth a punt.

  8. Hamiltontim

If a player doesn’t want a new contract and you can get 12 mil for him, whatchagonnado?

Like Ki before him he came to Europe with a plan and playing for us was an essential part of that plan, we’ve turned a great profit on both players and like it or not business is good, that’s football these days!

Hope yer well Mate after yer jaunt down South..

You had a discussion some time back about alimentary procedures under sedation.

A suggestion.Ask for both procedures to be carried under sedation on the same visit.

Hopefully they`ll use different scopes OR gob first.

Great player Safri but he just signed this year again from Anderlecht did he no and they’ll be expecting a run again in Europe, some Basel fans looking forward to meeting us in the CL again!!

I actually agreed with a lot of Kojo’s post yesterday about players being mercenaries, the likes of Wanyama especially.

I’m not being critical of him, he wants the big bucks that the EPL will offer but we need to accept that’s the market we’re working in.

Aye had a great time down south thanks, hope you and your lot are all doing well.

    Victor Wanyama

Italian rumor mongers linked him with Inter ——

2 versions of the story —–

Inter want to sign Napoli’s Behrami —-if they don’t succeed , they will go for Wanyama .

Inter want to sign Basilea’s Dragovic —–if they don’t succeed ,they will go for Celtic’s Wanyama..

Inter are said to be talking with Napoli re Behrami and the Dragovic thing is said to be almost sealed .

If the media are to be believed then Inter could get both Behrami and Dragovic for less than Southampton will pay for Wanyama.

  13. Green Lantern (((((0))))) on

Re the zombs’ community bath in the sea. That’ll be because they couldnae afford to pay the leccy bill for a real bath.

Cocooned in Brora? Is this the new Sleepless in Seattle?

  14. If Wanyama waited another year he would have probably got bigger than Southampton.

He’s been dictated and following his agents like most players.

Agents don’t care about footballers possible future with regards the types of teams they could play for. ££££££ for them and if some club like Hull and Cardiff or Southampton come up with what they wany they will cnvince player to go.

This is where a player should just have the footballs to say beat it just now and come back with a better club.

  15. Think a lot of fans are not happy with the vic situation is that we have now no midfield and Neil will not get much of the cash to strengthen Our club has no ambition and only interested in bottom line

We should have kept vic for another year and he could have helped our team

  16. WGS.

I have moaned about agents for years.

Previously the clubs held all the aces as they had total control.

Now the agents are the ones with the power..

Players know they have a short career and money talks more than medals and achievements.

Thats the way it is unfortunately.

  17. I know Wanyama is young like many footballers.

te money on offer in football today for somebody as young at wanyama is decent. I’m sure Celtic would have given him a decent chunk to continue another season and sign an extra years extension.

Now for me playinkig another year possibly in the CL would make him even more chance of securing a bigger club next year plus probably more cash and he still would be only about 24.

    Bonkers!!!

No exactly gonnae be skint at say 20k a week at Celtic for one more year .

  18. Estadio Nacional on

Maybe the scouts/board have another £900,000 Wanyama already lined up to replace Vic?

  19. unionbearBhind on

Just an opinion both if younger would command a sell on fee as they are industrious for most part and catch the eye, but when you look at their goal and assists record, not enough bang for your buck? I loved Aiden at celtic but when watching him play for Ireland and spartac realised just how frustrating he can be, he seems to run out of ideas and loses the ball even more these days, we wouldn’t be able to sell him on again? so I would rather we found a player we could nurture or even give some of our young lhads from development team more of a chance to shine? Bring them on during coming season, against away league teams to start with, so they don’t have crowd pressure at home games. its the only way we will ever profit from our youth programme if we don’t give them the chance other teams will benefit from our time, and sorry to say lack of commitment, if they don’t get that chance?

  20. WGS – Safri has gone to Basel. Think we can do better in the market to be honest – we do need a left back, particularly one who can defend in the air. I like Elderson from Braga – played regularly for Nigeria in the Confed cup. he is ahead of the other nigerian left back we have been linked with (from israel). He is big (6’1”) pacy, defends well and can put a good ball in from the left. he scored against us when we played Braga. A lot bigger and stronger than Izzy.

option 2 for me would be baba Rahman from Greuther Furth. He is young (19ish) and was not playing against us as he is captaining Ghana at the U20 world cup. He is Fürth’s best player, and joined them as he felt the Bundesliga is the best league to develop in as a player. As they are relegated now, he may well be looking to leave. Hoffenheim/Schalke have been linked, but am sure he would be a realistic target – not too expensive. Ghana U20 are in the semi finals against France. rahman is pacy, tall (still growing) and will go far in the game I am sure.

Left back is a hard position to find a good one (as Celtic have found out over the years) so a quality left back tend s to be a good investment. Both these players would (I am certain) attract EPL interest in a year or 2.

” If Wanyama waited another year he would have probably got bigger than Southhampton ”

    Maybe —

but – maybe -Wanyama is gambling on shining at Southampton and convincing the big boys that he has the necessary .

Interesting that Conte [ in the build up to Celtic v Juve ] said that Celtic’s best players were Samaras and Wanyama . He said he had followed Samaras since his early days in Holland . He said that Wanyama looked to have enormous potential but was playing in [ with all respect ] a very poor league..

  22. I hope Wanyama proves his worth to Southampton and that the Saints win a trophy or finish high enough to qualify for European competition

  23. HT. that’s life these days. Lots of players at lots of clubs want to leave their clubs We could not let him go as it leaves a massive hole in midfield with no cash to fill it

Always delightful to catch up with old friends after a period of separation.

    In this case,cricket.

    England v Oz.

The disillusion felt over bribery and corruption amongst various players of various cricket teams can be swept aside in the reasonable expectation that this is probably a “clean” contest.

Day 2 and 20 mins. to go.

A rare opportunity to celebrate with the winner, whichever team it happens to be.

    – I seriously hope they do. players like him are loved by clubs in the big leagues, and he will be such a massive hole to fill that I am honestly surprised we didn’t replace him before he was even sold. There are 2 or 3 pretty good options available at relatively low prices – I really hope Celtic act deciseively and get Wanyama2 in asap.

  26. Maybe the money men are regretting not selling izzie and thought once bitten twice shy.

  27. ST

We signed Victor for £800,000 I’m pretty sure that at least that amount will be set aside for a replacement.

  28. After reading this piece below I had to conclude that Sydney “Tim” actually runs Southampton F.C!!!!!!!!!!!

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………

As well as that, it will nudge Saints’ spending for the summer over the £20m mark, after the signing of defender Dejan Lovren from Lyon in a deal worth up to £8.6m, and their total since winning promotion back to the Premier League beyond £50m.

And that stunning figure could rise to around the £70m mark if Saints somehow managed to bring in Brazilian striker Leandro Damião, who is on their radar this summer.

Last season, Saints spent approximately £35m in transfer fees, with Ramírez topping the list at £12m.

The available funds are not likely to run out after Wanyama, either.

    ……………………………………………………………………….

PLEASE CELTIC – LET SYDNEY “TIM” AND HIS LIKE MINDED RUN THE CLUB
