Principled resignations, ASA withdraw adjudication

1739

I cannot fathom why someone would leak their intentions to quit as chairman of a football club.  Either Walter Smith is sufficiently alarmed by the conduct of his club to resign, or he should be busy working to resolve matters.  Leaking that he intends to resign will surely only add to the nonsense that surrounds the club.

Some will believe that Smith, who accepted the position as chairman of Rangers International when season tickets went on sale in May, can shuffle of the scene now 34,000 tickets have been sold.  Shareholder votes will determine the future of the club, in this instance, the identity of the chairman has little reach beyond parting fans with their cash.

Some investors may consider a more immediate problem is why the club are burning a hugely disproportionate amount of cash to secure promotion from the third tier of Scottish football, and why a management structure is not in place to deploy resources more effectively.

In light of Francisco Sandaza’s off-the-cuff comments to Tommy in Glasgow, and his subsequent dismissal by Rangers International, we urge Mr McCoist to be more cautious than he was after his team’s spirited, but ultimately fruitless, performance in Forfar on Saturday.  It would be unfortunate if McCoist transgressed a condition of employment and suffered accordingly.

Advertising Standards Authority ruling withdrawn

It doesn’t rain but it pours.  The Independent Review Process of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has looked into the ASA’s recent, and widely reported, ruling on Rangers International’s claim on football titles won by a liquidated club. The Review found that “it was a procedural flaw for the ASA to have relied on an extract only of a report sent to it by the advertiser”.

Further, the review process ruled that “there was also the risk of a substantial flaw of adjudication in the distinction that had been made between ‘club’ and ‘company’, especially in the light of previous ASA decisions about companies that change hands and the circumstances in which the new company could or could not trade off the reputation of the old company”.

The Chairman of the ASA, Lord Smith of Finsbury, as decided to reopen the ASA’s investigation into the case and to withdraw the published adjudication, which favoured the advertiser.  Withdrawing this adjudication does not infer that a different outcome will subsequently be reached.  To use a football analogy, it’s half time and they’re all square.

An interesting, and potentially critical part of the story, is that after the initial ASA decision was issued, the club’s web site noted that their submission to the process included information that a “panel of the London Stock Exchange” supported their claim.

The Stock Exchange subsequently appeared surprised at this assertion, so much so that the club promptly withdrew the claim from the web article.

“You’re history, that’s what you are, na na na na”.

  2. As good old Campbell would say, ‘ I’m hopelessly conflicted on the GB issue’

I love the GB . They bring a colour and vibrancy to the park.

I am angry that for years the zombies have polluted our stadium , doing the bouncy , singing the most vile of songs and wrecking seats and toilets without health & safety being an issue.

The club have no choice but to act IMO on the Pyros and lateral movement if that threatens the safety certificate.

I am sure that given some assurances by the GB an accommodation can be made.

There is no need for this conflict , dialogue between the GB & Celtic is the key and must happen now!

The annoying thing is that this becomes an issue now and not when the zombies were up to no good.

Maybe I’m cynical but I feel the unseen hand of hurting Huns , jealous of our well managed club and jealous of our supporters reputation worldwide .

As Fat Sally would say’ I demand to know the names of the health & safety executive’

    Indeed . .

Liverpool 1966.. Bobby Lennox goal disallowed . Some Celtic supporters showed their disapproval of that decision by indiscriminately throwing bottles. .. Guy next to me was hit on the back of his head by a bottle . He was seriously injured , he was hospitalized, he was unable to sit the O Grades he was due to sit … The numb nut piece of shit who did it probably went home , went to sleep ,woke up in the morning and then boasted to his pals re how how pure steamin he’d been .

Goal disallowed —— let’s throw bottles into the crowd —way to go .1966 stylee

Aye must be quite a list, I haven’t been around much these last days, been trying to catch up with the millions of posts about the GB situation.

Seems odd to me that the GB tiff/ultra thing is coming in for so much attention when almost every decent sized club in Europe has the same Tifo/ultra culture and it passes off with no comment from UEFA unless of course some busybody hurtin’ hun type person is bending UEFA’s ear about us?

FC Basel’s Ultras The Muttezerkurve have flares and smoke and banners every game they play in Europe for example so did Celtic get a heads up from someone and have dealt with the situation in house before Uefa become involved?

A very emotional subject for all of us and very badly timed before our biggest game of the season, there are many who would love to see us fail tomorrow night..

I never misquoted you, I never para-phrased you, I never para-quoted you I wrote the following (I’d be interested in which parts you think I am being unfair to you or anybody else)

I am no structural engineer but I’ve spent long enough in construction to know that stadiums are built with very generous safety factors incorporated into design. I can’t imagine Fergus McCann allowing Celtic’s agents allowing the designers and the constructors to deviate from the most stringent of design and construct criteria. I’m pretty sure from memory that Celtic Park was built to a very high standard above any local requirements. All those structural calculations, all those steel member profile determinations, all those concrete cube test results, all of it its retained on record and is used in litigation if required. A detailed HAZOP will have been conducted and will also be a matter of record. I’d think the engineers who designed the stadium will have done so with a very boisterous ‘old firm’ crowd in mind.

I’d bet a whole lot of money on that being the case.

I think you’ll find that the whole stadium doing the huddle would be of greater concern to structural engineers than a few hundred supporters indulging a wee bit of lateral movement. Why don’t Celtic take the season tickets off all those who insist in putting the stadium and their fellow supporters at risk by selfishly indulging the huddle? (not meant seriously)

Do you think the stadium gets stressed every time the ref blows for full time and those in the crowd, a lot more than a few hundred, all laterally make their way to the exits?

I would truly be concerned about the stadium and those in it if Celtic truly is concerned about the dangers of a few kids having a bit of fun.

I think a non-Celtic supporting jobsworth is making mischief at the expense of Celtic’s twitching sphincter; hopefully the jobsworth is not that focused on Parkhead that he/she fails to identify and react to more immediate and serious problems elsewhere in the city.

If some of the angst does not disipate there will be a few contributors not reaching retirement age mind you.

Chill folks. Its a game of football in the river of life that flows where it wants and at a speed of its choosing. Dont try and alter the flow, jump in a canoe and paddle through the odd rapids.

  12. Have i missed something is lateral movement is the issue is it due to the movement being over a prolonged period. It is maybe a stupid comparison but there are mass lateral movements towards the exits as the crowd leave CP every home game. One has to move laterally to reach the exits. I am an enginner, albeit not of the structual variety,l and find it strange that all potential stress inducing movements were not calculated and huge safety factors calculated and included during the construction design phase. It is after all a sports stadia and more importantly a football stadium.

I have asked this question too on numerous occasions. and never received an answer.

these flares and displays are done every match by Turkish, French, Italian

Spanish, swiss supporters…etc the list is endless (ive checked) and none of

these teams/countries come up on trumped up uefa charges…WHY?

don’t get me wrong, if im asked to not do something by someone on their property

that would be the end of that…but that’s not my concern here…why are celtic supporters

getting the flak/heat here from uefa when they let every other team/country in Europe away with it?????

I have no axe to grind re GB. the atmos they have brought

to celtic park is unequalled in my lifetime supporting celtic (43yrs)

im not interested on all the other additional goings on and arguments

I am a supporter of some of what the GB bring to the ground , I have also supported them financially when I knew they were being persecuted by FOCUS but some of the latest stuff is just silly .

They must realise that there are lots of little dictators out there with an agenda against our club and they would like nothing better than to have an excuse to close the ground if given the chance . I hope and pray the new supporters liason guy can come up with a solution to this as it will take away so much from the atmosphere .

I agree there are some numpties, that isn’t the point i was making

IMO It suited Celtic to have some outside agencies deal with Celtics agenda to control section 111, an agenda driven by various reasons ( H&S, OB bill, MSM, looking to join English leagues ) Celtic could maintain a healthy distance well at least publicly with the agenda to control 111, however it backfired as Strathclyde’s finest took the OB act to ridiculous levels of oppressive policing which included getting information on Celtic fans in section 111

As i said in this area i completely distrust the Celtic board

Dialogue with the GB should have been extensive and comprehensive with meetings which involved all members of the Celtic community long before we got to this point

As you have already commented this morning our friends from Govan can break rules, laws without impunity, including at Celtic park

How is GCC H&S getting on with investigating ibrokes holes in the roof, are they in any danger of a safety certificate……

Celtic are in a unique position I believe in being discriminated against by the people who actually run our game and our society to a certain extent, Basel for instance is a one team town and when the team does well the whole city celebrates and gets a lift, Celtic do well as Champions of Scotland, it barely rates a mention!! I wouldn’t be surprised at all if some sneaky little hun supporting herbert has Uefa’s ear on this…

My experience of the GB on my last couple of visits home has been positive inside the stadium has been overwhelmingly positive and every team Celtic’s size in Europe has these kind of lads creating a great vibe, I love going to football in Germany for instance but if one section of the support are at loggerheads with the club itself then they need to sit down and work out between them what is best for Celtic. This situation with the GB was predicted way back by our own Mr Z after his experience with his teams Ultras.

Scotland is a football backwater run by agenda driven guys who think they are big fish is an ever decreasing pond(life) The game back home needs a root and branch clear out and a whole new beginning but no one including Celtic seems to have the where with all to take this on..

    Hopefully he’s over it.

  25. I was just having a look at old Amido Balde’s stats for last season, and 9 goals in 19 starts isn’t that bad. Espcecially since 5 of his subs appearances were for less than 10 minutes.
