PSG have yet to be asked questions

494

Friday night is the new Saturday afternoon, apparently. Celtic, Paris Saint-Germain and Anderlecht all play tomorrow evening. Only Bayern Munich from our Champions League group have a weekend game; on Saturday, so there will be little advantage gained from the earlier domestic kick-off.

PSG are away to Metz, near the German border. Whereas PSG are top of Ligue 1, having won all their games, Metz are anchored at the bottom, the only team yet to take a point. This game is a perfect opportunity for PSG to rest players who have been busy on international duty, before the trip to Glasgow. Celtic’s scouts will be able to observe the shape of their forthcoming opponents, but the intensity of the game will not come close to what we see at Celtic Park.

Immediately before the international break, PSG beat Saint Etienne 3-0 in Paris. It is one measure of a good team to win comfortably even when not playing well. PSG achieved this against Le Verts, but there was encouragement for Brendan Rodgers in this game. This was also the only league game PSG have played against a team who have not lost at least half of their matches so far.

Without having to go through the trauma of Champions League qualifiers, the notion persists that PSG have yet to be asked questions this season. They may be able to revel in the joys of having signed two exciting new strikers, but great teams are made of durable cohesion, not striking bling.

SFA admit Rangers UEFA license could be probed as tax row continues

Court testimony in the recent Craig Whyte trial could see an investigation into the granting of a UEFA licence to Rangers back in 2011.

    BYRECORD SPORT ONLINE

    23:07, 7 SEP 2017UPDATED23:26, 7 SEP 2017

The SFA has snubbed the SPFL by refusing to join their review into the game’s response to Rangers ’ use of Employee Benefit Trusts.

But the governing body admitted court testimony in the recent Craig Whyte trial could see an investigation into the granting of a UEFA licence to Rangers back in 2011.

League chiefs want to re-examine how the tax avoidance scheme at Ibrox was handled and had asked the game’s governing body to take part in the review.

Rangers EBT row as SFA snub new SPFL probe into Ibrox club’s tax affairs

The SFA confirmed they had received a request from Neil Doncaster asking them to be involved in the investigation. Although Hampden chiefs claim the request was ‘sent by the SPFL on behalf of all clubs’, Record Sport understands Rangers were not party to the request.

The SFA were also sent a separate letter from one Scottish club calling for an independent review.

But now, in a letter to member clubs the association has said that “after careful consideration” it was refusing to accept the SPFL’s invitation for them to take part.

In the correspondence they maintain that “raking over the coals” of the past would be “damaging”.

SPFL confirm they won’t launch new probe into Rangers’ use of EBTs but call for independent review

The SFA also confirmed it had set out a full response to the SPFL over the matter.

The letter states: “After careful consideration, the Board of the Scottish FA has declined the invitation to participate in such a review.

“The Scottish FA is currently examining the detail of what was said in the most recent court cases and you can be assured that the matter will be dealt with by the Compliance Officer if there is any suggestion that the organisation has been knowingly misled in any of the matters that came before it.

“However, the image of the game in Scotland can only be damaged further by ‘raking over the coals’ of everything that has happened in the last six years for a further lengthy period of time.

“No-one is complacent or insensitive to the issues. It will be impossible to satisfy every supporter, every club official and every member club. Nevertheless, the Board of the Scottish FA is resolute.

“It has acted with integrity and in the best interests of Scottish football at all times.”

Supreme Court rejects BDO appeal and rules in favour of HMRC in oldco Rangers big tax case

However, in the letter to clubs, the SFA also declared that the court testimony of two former Rangers oldco directors regarding the ‘Wee Tax Case’ – “might have implications in the context of the Uefa licence granted in 2011”.

“On the face of it, there seem to be contradictions between those statements and written representations made at the time,” it stated.

“In 2011, Oldco indicated there was an ongoing dispute with HMRC, but the evidence in the Craig Whyte trial suggests that Oldco knew by early 2011 that it had no defence to HMRC’s claim.

“This matter has been referred to the compliance officer for further investigation following receipt of information of a written opinion from senior counsel.”

The so-called ‘Big Tax Case’ ruling in July this year led to renewed calls from fans groups to re-open the matter that had previously been decided by the Lord Nimmo Smith inquiry in 2013.

That initial inquiry took place at a time when Rangers’ tax affairs were deemed to have operated within tax law.

Celtic respond to Rangers big tax case ruling and call for title stripping review

Rangers oldco were fined £250,000 by Lord Nimmo Smith for the deliberate non-disclosure of the EBT payments to players but, crucially, he decided there was no sporting advantage.

This ensured that no sporting sanctions, such as stripping the Light Blues of titles won during the EBT era, took place.

The Nimmo Smith report said that while EBTs were not illegal, Rangers broke rules aimed at ensuring financial transparency in football by not disclosing them to the game’s governing bodies.

However, the Supreme Court later found in favour of HMRC when they ruled that the way Rangers used EBTs had breached British tax law.

Yesterday it was revealed Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell had written to his SFA counterpart Stewart Regan in 2012 demanding a review of the scandal and insisting the stripping of titles won by the Ibrox club during the EBT years form part of the probe.

Celtic again called upon the ruling body to forensically investigate the financial implosion and subsequent liquidation of Rangers two months ago. But it is understood they have yet to receive a response.

This SFA mob according to the report above from DR this morning, have NO intention in having the EBT and DOS issues investigated, maybe Celtic will have to get them in Court ?

Funny also how thre is NO mention of celtics letter from 25th May 2012.

Hinging is too good for these peepil.

  4. Sorry , Celtics letter of 25th May 2012 IS mentioned but NO explanation of why it was ignored for over 5 years, so the SFA obviously view that 1st letter as irrelevant.

  7. I got another wee turn at the Bookies yesterday, and won just over £60.

trainer Donald McCain ( Yet Again)…had 3 horses running…2 winners. Although in one race he had two runners, and I went against the fav and backed his horse with the great wee jocky Will Kennedy on it, as I wondered why the stables number one Jockey was on the outsider of the two ?

I was right, young Kennedy had the 6/1 winner…I got 7/1 in the morning.

His other winner was priced at 11/a….I got 3/1 earlier.

Another stable that is going well is Trainer Clive Cox on the flat.

He had 3 runners yesterday, the first two won @ 5/1 and 10/1.

His third horse finished 3rd sadly, however, I backed the 3 of them at odds of 7/1, 20/1 and 25/1 on one line ( 7 bets).

I got the 7/1 winner along with the 20/1 winner….IF the 25/1 shot had done the business, I would be holding the keys to the Bookies this morning ? LOL.

One black spot yesterday…I also got the Salisbury PlacePot up, but it only paid £11.90, but included in that placepot was the two Clive Cox winners….and a Richard Hannon horse that won @ 40/1.

Why did I not have the 40/1 on a line ?

    Ah well…I cant complain.

Oh I did lose £10 on Wednesday.

This would be a GREAT time for Celtic FC to INFORM the SFA that no Celtic p[layer is to be included in the next two World Cup qualifiers ( at least ), UNTIL such times they agree to an Independent , Fair and Transparent Judicial Review of ALL that has went on including, EBTs, DOS and SFA CCOVER UUPS…..simples !

A long way to go on new club, you rightly state that uefa has written that this is what they are, Russell read a different version of this letter on television, titles would be stripped from a dead club not something that is still in existence. Regan recently got a new job on the commercial side of the champions league given to him by uefa doesn’t look like uefa care too much about his conduct.

  20. A quote from the statement reads It will be impossible to satisfy every supporter, every club official and every member club. I agree that would be difficult particularly after decades of bending over backwards to satisfy one club. Every statement they come out with only confirms what we have known for years. One thing that would go a long way to satisfying the vast majority would be the truth which has been in particularly short supply of late. It really is time for all of them to be shown up for what they are and the damage they have inflicted on the game in this country. Fortunately within our ranks there are people who have the intelligence and experience to show the world how small minded and incompetent these people have been and continue to be. Time to let them loose.

  21. I see the bbc are at it again by having the audacity of making programs about benefit cheats, council house cheats, rip off britain, fake britain etc. Surely we don’t have the appetite for raking over this stuff – as Chris Mclaughlin would say – time to move on.

  22. That’s right Celtic, forget about title stripping,go after the S F A, that’s we’re the corruption is,

  23. You’re correct, Gene, re: programmes which rake over the coals of benefit cheating.

It would simply be impossible to satisfy every citizen, tax payer, employer or employee in such an enquiry.

Interesting wee prog on R4 earlier, about your adopted land. Seems it has the fastest population shrinkage in the world. Down from 9m to 7m since 2000,with another 2m expected to go by 2050.

    Not blaming you,btw!!!

Ive been here full-time now 12 yrs having moved up from Turkiye (thats a long story btw) but we had this home here for 16 yrs as a wee holiday escape from the sweltering heat. We get a winter here which breaks up the heat which is constant during the summer. Much nicer folk here and of course i can practice my faith without anyone questioning whats that round yir neck :-)))

The mrs was just reading that out to me this morning about the population drop, but it’s not surprising as there is no work here for local folk. Grand place to retire to peaceful and quiet and you can still leave yir door open. And not to forget it’s HUN FREE as the Polis have a zero tollerance strategy in place :-)))
