Question Peter will ask Brendan in May

290

Can we step back for a moment and look at Brendan Rodgers considerations for Odsonne Eduard this season?  In May, Peter Lawwell is going to ask the manager if he wants to pay PSG €10m to make his transfer permanent.

To answer that question Brendan will need to a firm view on how Odsonne compares to other candidates, with similar profiles to him and Olivier Ntcham.  They will all be a risk, but the manager needs to strengthen his team, so he must give himself the best possible information before committing.

One of the benefits of playing in Scotland is that we can afford to give a young talent an extended run in the team without affecting our title chances.  We can make changes which will have a negative impact on short-term performances, but will improve our long-term prospects.

There is another side of the player acquisition equation to consider.  Brendan had to convince Odsonne and Olivier that Celtic was the right club for them.  To do this, he pointed to Moussa Dembele, who was given his chance.  What young players attached to tier-one wealthy clubs want more than anything else (apart from money) is a game time.

Whether Odsonne makes it at Celtic or not, you can be sure Brendan will point to the opportunities he has to make an impression when he speaks to other targets.

Over the last 48 hours our lead at the top of the table went from 8 to 11 points, while giving a young player time on the field.  Leigh and Moussa know the script and are happy to concentrate on their own game, while allowing the manager to worry about youth development.

I agree with you, simple things that a pro footballer should be doing without even thinking about seem to be hard for some of them, like passing to a team mate, as for free kicks, if they can’t get it sorted in the alloted training time, extend it till they can.

Word are cheap mi amigo, players cost cash, we were told a while back that we will prepare for the CL qualifiers well in advance, it’s no happening, the past two qualifiers we have been blessed, it seems to me that the suits are willing to gamble again with qualification.

Why else was Brendan brought in, it sure as hell wisny to win the spl, Ronny could have done that well enough.

He has spent little money since he came in, he wanted a CB last summer, he didn’t get one, now it’s all about wanting quality, you know as well as I do when the quality doesn’t happen it will be we tried, blah blah blah, aye some planning.

Hope so too, and hope Lustig is not included. Has been a great servant, but if he were a horse, he would be hauled to the knackee’s yard.

I was watching matt letisier bring interviewed by Gary Neville the other day and he told a story about practicing free kicks with Beckham when he was in an England squad. He said it severely affected his confidence, Beckham was so much better than him, he said he was miles better than anyone he ever played with.

Same shape and tactics as the game v Copenhagen.Pass and move at pace .Fullbacks running on to diagonal balls from midfield .Yes – Friendlies -but they look like a good team.

They are a very good team, much better than Anderlecht. Zenit arranged 6 friendlies before they play us. Next up for them ate Chinese big spenders Guangzhou Evergrande.

So true…I have forgot just how desperate the media are for THEIR team to be back at the top….Celtic have to do something exceptional[like go a full season unbeaten!] to get anything like the praise that is being dished out to this rangers team…I am so glad I don’t live in scotland and have to listen to this mince every day.

Brendan Rodgers is speaking in the ‘now’ about what’s generally and historically regarded the secondary ’small window’ yet he still views to strengthen the club.

Modern Celtic do not spend ‘big’ in January especially not, when there is no emergency unless you consider 11 points clear, Euro football apres Christmas, won a cup, in the other cup, and one defeat in 74 domestic games, an emergency.

Not only do ad nauseam posts point us correctly to 31/01/ 18 they also explain why little will happen till the window slams shut.

Celtic have made bids to strengthen what is already a record breaking squad with returning from injury stars, all will be revealed by 1/02/18.

  10. Are you for serious?

Slavia Prague has new coach who is trying to learn who is who in his team.

Will it be enough if I say: new centre back, new right back, new face in the goal, and so on ?

this Season then you will hear their excuses oh hynesite is another matter basically they

(The Scottish Media) are a shower of gobshite hypocrites

Iniquitousiv, yes Mikel Lustig is not a great defender I’ll give you that but he can

put in useful crosses & can come up with an odd goal here & there so you are

right we need to strengthen the Right-Back position which is obvious to all of

us mainly the whole defense needs strengthen especially if we want to try

& make inroads in future European footy its a matter that needs to be addressed

asap however I believe we will get better over time not worse as some idiots

out there in the media are trying to paint doom & gloom when it comes to the

    matter about referring to Us

  13. The St Mirren “fan”

  14. DENA29

I agree 100%…….I also have a strong feeling that this Celtic team is about to move through the gears and start running ragged in the premier league…Yes Europa will be tough but I feel we have so much talent that has been coasting this season and that is bound to change very soon..Rangers for all their noise have shown nothing for me and I would still bet on them Not being second if I had to put my life on it.

  15. Iniquizitiv

You make lots of good points there in your original post.

Our throw ins are utterly cringeworthy. Weekly.

I read that Zenit spent £150m last summer and are linked with guys at £25.

To paraphrase from the Dragons Den…..

And it’s for that reason that we’re out!

Seriously, I give us very little chance of progressing. I’m just hoping it’s not going to be another Euro mauling.

  16. Hi Bhoys

New signings are indeed needed and I agree with the majority who think we need a right back, centre half, playmaker and a striker maybe a goalie too but that’s just me.

The managerment team keep telling us we need to buy better quality for europe. I truly think we have reached our place in europe when we qualify for the group stages. I really don’t see us being able to get into the knockout stages of the champions league due to the new format and us not being as financially well off as the teams who will make it. There will be the odd team to prove this wrong but not to often.

So why not just buy players to ensure we stay at that level but more importantly to win the domestic honours available to us. If we can’t win the big cup again let’s go for the the other thing that would please our supporters. It would certainly please me. Win everything in Scotland skelp the huns every time we play them and their horde will stop going to see them and they will be out of our lives forever.

I wonder if anyone has ever put this to the management team. Forget the big cup for now and just hammer the huns every time till they are no more. I have said on here before the only way they exist is through the gate money, all other monies are either gone or drying up.

Pump them every time and the huns will stop going to see them and they will die.

Tell the board and the management in the short term we will settle for this. It would make their jobs easier with regards to signing players.

    KEEP THE FAITH

Hope your right , I agree that we did appear to be coasting and injuries coupled with a little complacency (tin hat on) have derailed us post break , but think we will get back on track I’m hoping it will be before the Europa game

Celtic’s money still getting salted away to a wee Lady in Ireland?

(she was Tom Grant’s auntie BTW ) or Peter getting a new heated

    Roman Travertine marble heated drive?

I’d imagine Brendan’s words are true if they were developed, off the record I’m

sure he’d elaborate that he’s found it difficult to spend his money rather than

any of the mythical stuff underpinned with cynicism surrounding the Celtic

    biscuit tin.

Scotland ( or Sevconia ) has found it difficult to accept that Celtic are light years

ahead of the rest, and will be for the foreseeable future but they’ll pedal urban

myths that sub consciously permeates to some Celtic supporters.

I’d like Gazebo player signings as well but won’t hold my breath despite the fact that we’re minted.

  20. BOURNESOUPRECIPE

I am not looking for an argument, and you make good points. But consider this – we lost 12 goals to PSG, one year after losing 9 to Barca. We lost every Group Stage home game. We scraped through on goal difference. Where is the preparation to prevent a Europa Cup humiliation? Signing Compper and Morgan? You seem confident that Celtic have made bids to strengthen the team. Is that based on inside knowledge, blind faith, or something else? I will accept your word for it, but one of my points is that so many other teams seem to get their business done earlier in the window, and have their incomes already playing! When is the last time we have done that?

The World Cup and the additional CL qualification round changes the equation. We cannot simply do what we have always done. We have to plan for the end of this season. Glorying in one defeat in 75 does us no good at at all. That defeat was 4-0 to Levein and Lafferty – think about that for a moment. What are we doing to prevent a repeat of that mauling?

I agree that the return of Roberts will help us, but will we have him next season? Will we have Armstrong? Too many question marks, and no clearly defined strategy to address them. That’s my issue, and the way forward is not clear.

  21. You defend you core income like a She Wolf

Our core income is winning the SPL

And getting whatever scraps we can get from Europe

We can afford a Fiesta in a Formula One race

  22. BSR

I have never believed that it is a wee Lady in Ireland, Barbados possibly……..

Brendan has managed to spend on a couple of first picks, he has imo wasted a few bob as well, but all managers do, that is not a slight on him in any way, just the way it is.

I still can’t get the head around why we brought in a top, top manager to win the spl, unless we brought him in to do something in europe, if we did and it’s why we did, I honestly can’t see the suits backing him as they should be, we have a few bob, there are players out there that would improve us big time and they wouldn’t break the bank, the heated drive could get an upgrade, the golf could be taken care of for the foreseeable and bob’s yer auntie.

  23. Doubt that Brendan is asked about how much we should pay for anyone. I suspect that Paul is being disingenuous with the scenario about our buying players. Brendan does not have a say on what to offer for players, unless he is more in with the board than we think.

  24. How come expectation management is only an accusation levelled against those who say things are better than you think?

Surely those posters who are saying we are worse than we think are also trying to force their narrative to be agreed and accepted?

How come then that we only hear the expectation management jibe from the mineshafting sections? Are they particularly wary or sensitive about alternative opinions? Are they wary that their views are not getting much traction so they dismiss alternative viewpoints as brainwashed? Or are they just one-eyed in their approach to this matter of “expectation management”?

I learned on CQN only to argue/ debate / chew the fat with posts that merit a reply.

European Celtic is another matter, but its factual that, that type of euro gazebo player rarely gets enticed to Celtic Park in January.

When BR says quality you would now require £5M plus and I point to Olivier Ntcham who is only 19/20 and is regarded as a prospect.

    £4.5M for a prospect?

Our money would soon be gone if it was me or you that was buying at that rate, and I’m happy that our world class manager didn’t spend £8M on Odsonne Edouard who hasn’t had to wait long for the jungle jury to call him a ‘dud’ or more politely ‘he not worth that money’

Brendan Rodgers has broken every other record and I’m confident he’ll smash the transfer figure too, though not by the end of January.

I am not really complaining, just looking at things from both sides and I can see why many are bitching.

Problem I have is the spin….we are planning for the CL etc, etc, just doesn’t wash any more i’m afraid, as I said, we have been blessed by getting through the last couple of qualifiers, Rosenberg should have finished us off at Celtic Park, thankfully they didn’t, yet we have brought in very little to compliment that team.

This time next week we will see the real ambitions of the board, BR has said he wants quality, it’s out there without a doubt.

    HH

  29. TET

The bitching or hysteria is because Sevco got a draw and ‘sign’ a star every day? while

    we are banking gazillions.

Celtic qualifying for the CL group stages for me is a bitter sweet experience especially after game 6.

I don’t believe in the Celtic in Europe agenda, money ruined that dream a long, long time ago.

But I do demand a different approach to what happens when we do qualify.
