Question Peter will ask Brendan in May

290

Can we step back for a moment and look at Brendan Rodgers considerations for Odsonne Eduard this season?  In May, Peter Lawwell is going to ask the manager if he wants to pay PSG €10m to make his transfer permanent.

To answer that question Brendan will need to a firm view on how Odsonne compares to other candidates, with similar profiles to him and Olivier Ntcham.  They will all be a risk, but the manager needs to strengthen his team, so he must give himself the best possible information before committing.

One of the benefits of playing in Scotland is that we can afford to give a young talent an extended run in the team without affecting our title chances.  We can make changes which will have a negative impact on short-term performances, but will improve our long-term prospects.

There is another side of the player acquisition equation to consider.  Brendan had to convince Odsonne and Olivier that Celtic was the right club for them.  To do this, he pointed to Moussa Dembele, who was given his chance.  What young players attached to tier-one wealthy clubs want more than anything else (apart from money) is a game time.

Whether Odsonne makes it at Celtic or not, you can be sure Brendan will point to the opportunities he has to make an impression when he speaks to other targets.

Over the last 48 hours our lead at the top of the table went from 8 to 11 points, while giving a young player time on the field.  Leigh and Moussa know the script and are happy to concentrate on their own game, while allowing the manager to worry about youth development.

Reading back I’m once again confused…

    NEGANON2,

Do you ever try to be objective? I don’t mean abandon your point of view and take a middle of the road position.

I mean, take a step back, re-read what you have written objectively and check to see how it reads to the open minded reader.

I’m sure you don’t because as I contended, coherently, your arguments often defy logic – Of course no reply came.

Like you suggested of Auldheid a few days ago, you’ve state Paul67 is duplicitous and a liar.

You intimate he has inside knowledge of what’s going on but he shouldn’t be believed because he’s working to an agenda.

From the Dembele situation – you suggested the recent impasse was manufactured by Celtic to enable them to sell the player.

Which in itself is odd, it’s pretty much accepted wisdom that Moussa came to Celtic with a view to further developing his career and moving on. Who was expecting him to see out his contract or sign an extension?

Yet you suggest that Celtic felt they had to manufacture a morass in order to sell the player.

A situation that if anything devalues the player In the market. Brendan is on record earlier this month as stating no bids had come in.

Why, if you are trying to sell the player, would you allow this difficult situation to transpire and talk down the bidding?

    Of course you wouldn’t.

It now looks like the situation has been resolved to a certain extent and Brendan Rodgers has now clarified the position.

Of course, according to you he shouldn’t be believed. Why?

Because YOU have inside knowledge. MMMMmmmmm… Yet you should be believed? Do YOU have an agenda?

    Hail Hail

If the SFA have decided to no longer use Hampden for international or cup games it surely behoves Celtic to ‘throw their hat in the ring’. They are a plc,the board must look after the plc.

Now, if you tender for ‘the job’ you expect to win it.

Also, what would MSSM say if a delapidated stadium with 10000 less seats ‘won’ the right to stage said games against Celtic Park.Surely even they could not defend that.Personally thinking they will go to Murrayfield and ‘allow’ TFOD to move to Hampden as Queens Park will never be able to sustain it .

But then I am a cynical auld b’ when it comes to thems!!!!!

I don’t have much time for NEGANON’s personal attacks on PAUL67,but with Dembele,I’ve always been of the opinion that he came here to learn, and to boost his profile for a big move.

Phase 1 complete last season, caught the eye of the big boys, and had that progress continued,I have little doubt he’d have been off in the summer-possibly earlier if injuries hadn’t put him back a few steps.

But he has had a run of injuries. And while his form, when he returned, was good,it stalled following THAT tackle v Motherwell.

    Not even a free-kick,remember?

Barely kicked a ball since. Is he worried about his hamstring, about getting a kicking for eff all? Dunno, and wouldn’t blame him for either. But he needs to his his career plan back on track. And the best way to do that is to get back to form.

  8. BMCUW @ 8:12 AM,

Agreed on Dembele, Brendan has reiterated there is an agreed plan. This could even be a template for promising young players that came to Celtic.

As far as the Hoo-Ha is concerned there doesn’t have to be anything too Machiavellian in it. As you say Dembele may well have legitamate concerns over his injuries and lack of protection from Scottish Referees.

He may well be legitimately interested in any potential suitors and their current position.

The Celtic management may well be legitimately concerned about his focus.

None of these things are mutually exclusive- quite the opposite in fact.

Of course if you take NEGANON2’s position in assuming everyone who speaks for Celic either formally or informally is a liar, then a myriad of possibilities, flights of fancy, open up.

When it gets that personal, it’s just not on…

    Hail Hail

  9. Chairhoy. I am objective when I am not clear on what is going on.

I am very clear on what is going on here.

So celtic, whom Paul often says, do their work in private, have their manager and assistant manager telling the media that Dembele is unsettled. Dembele has said nothing (and I know he is somewhat perplexed by what is going on – hence Sutton’s publicly raised concern).

The ONLY logic, followed up by the Roma story, is that Celtic are trying to sell Dembele. Now there is an angle, proposed by another posted, that Celtic believe that Dembele is crocked. But for a young player that is very very unlikely.

So the question is why? Why are celtic trying to offload Dembele? and Why have they left it late in the transfer window?

Then we have Paul’s articles. They are now getting beyond parody. This latest one is basically saying that if we don’t manage to spend the money then tough and shut up.

I have been watching and listening to Brendan – he is all over the place on all this. He has either had a fallout with the board or has agreed with their money lust but publicly is finding it all too hard to justify.

Either way celtic, from a position of absolute strength, are going backwards. The club has plenty of cash, but unlike any other commercial organisation, it intends to use its cash reserves to pay for a capital project (the hotel).

And no doubt more juicy bonuses.

As for my “attacks” on Paul. Paul is attacking us with every article he posts which is just pure propaganda. He is attacking our common sense. I am just calling him on it.

  10. Neganon2- you’re right. Over 10 years and not one coherent argument have I posted.

But then, I don’t come on here to ‘argue’. I prefer discussion as it’s more rewarding to hear another viewpoint and then discuss it’s merits.

    You’re starting point is to provoke argument with outlandish claims such as;

    Celtic are dying

I have inside information on Moussa….

I was reading the latest Grand Tour review in The Torygraph-aye,I’m bored again!-whatcha says that Nick Mason of Pink Floyd bought a Ferrari GTO 250 for £35k in 1978.

    It’s worth £30m now!

Anyway,a coupla years back, nice summer day,I’m stuck behind…some old twat in a Honda S2000,40 mph, roof down, right elbow on door ledge. Between Melksham and Chippenham,no chance of overtaking either.

Pulled alongside at the lights,he’s turning left into Corsham. I drew him a dirty look,a don’t-you-dare-go-straight-on look, and that’s the nearest I’ve been to one of my favourite band(!)

    £30m for a bloody car…

  13. Art of War – your right – you just come on and abuse anyone who doesn’t hold your view.

As for why I support Celtic and if it makes me happy? After over 40 years I don’t think I need to justify supporting celtic – I have thousands of great memories on and off the park.

See you are one dimensional – its all bad or all good.

Dermot Desmond however is an absentee owner. A billionaire who wants to make money from celtic. And who has absolute disdain for the support. Lawwell just does his bidding.

    As does Paul.

  14. Neg 2.

I have been in agreement with some of what you have being saying. Agree or disagree you definitely stimulate debate.

However I do not think it’s a bad idea to invest any cash reserves on improving our infrastructure. The new hotel complex if managed and utilised correctly will be extremely advantageous to Celtic and her supporters.

On Moussa, my position remains the same as before. A fit playing Moussa is a dream for us, however if he is not playing or will not play for whatever reason then that is a situation that suits no one.

Sometimes it’s not what people say that is the crucial factor, it’s how they say it or what they omit to say that can be compelling.

    HH.

  15. If and I am not entirely sure if I hold with the theory that Moussa has sort of downed tools cos he is getting no protection from referees, he isn’t btw, but if that were the case, he must have relayed this to Brendan or the coaching staff, if he has relayed this and they are not speaking out, then I could see him downing tools and I wouldn’t blame him, if this is the case, the problem lies way up the food chain, an asset worth £20+ mill that could be crocked cos of bent corrupt referees really needs dealt with one way or another, but only going by past instances, out custodians don’t give a feck when it comes to the cheating and the corruption from the sfa, so they will allow our prized asset to get crocked and say feck all.

True or not, it’s how the suits act that determine how I and others will think.

Celtic have a long history re lack of transparency, keep the fans in the dark. And,aye,it rips my knitting too, always has. Many a time,in fact, they’ve outright lied to us. So I can see where you’re coming from in many respects.

I’m not so sure about the current situation with Moussa-frankly,I’m very confused with it,for reasons already stated. I think it’s hard to play to anywhere like your best when your mind is largely occupied with a recurring injury-on predominantly poor pitches-and how many studs are gonna be hitting your ankle or knee very shortly.

I’m honestly not sure where we go with this. For once,I’m gonna bite the bullet and say that I want my Moussa back, but if my misgivings about his current mind-state are close to the truth,it’s better for all concerned for him to move to a league where he will have proper protection.

Someone mentioned West Ham last night. Personally,I think that would be the ideal move for him.

As for the personal stuff with PAUL67,cut it out, mate. People on here are capable of making our own minds up about what others write-though not necessarily with total accord!-and it does you little credit. PAUL67 may well be close to the hierarchy but it’s his shout what he posts.

Same as us all. Which is to his credit.

PS-none of your posts get deleted. Wish I knew your secret.

  17. Greenpinta

The idea of the hotel is a good one – its a good way to get our turnover and profit up and keep a distance financially from the huns (particularly because its clear that the board don’t have any ambition on the pitch).

However its a capital project. You raise the capital and the asset is on the balance sheet. Its not normal to pay for it with your cash. Its a bit like just buying a house with the money you have in your bank account.

Now then, as a football club that has a lot of money lying around, would you:

    a) Invest in the team – aim for success on the pitch

    b) Use it all to build a hotel and not aim for success on the pitch

and then as a secondary question

What is the aim of celtic football club? (the clue is in the title?)

You,me,CANAMALAR,and a fair few others, have been banging on about lack of protection and H&S for years. And we’ve all expected that some day a player will speak up about it when they leave.

No-one has. Beats the hell outa me.

Say hi to TBO. Give her my best. You can have my second-best(!)

  19. Bobby,

Like TET I am not really buying the “he’s worried about injury” stuff. Sure celtic players are given no protection – but if he is worried the club should be relaying that message and trying to do something about it. They aren’t (but then again they really don’t do speaking out do they?

The press stuff from Chris Davies had my toes curling. It was so obvious they were inviting bids for him. Then Brendan says something else. Celtic generally say nothing about anything – suddenly we have this. Then we have the Italian press say celtic are keen to sell.

Dembele has said nothing. His agent is not touting him.

The ONLY conclusion is celtic want to cash in – and the duplicity is breathtaking.

As for Paul – you are 100% correct – he is allowed to say what he likes. But then so should the rest of it – and it doesn’t mean I need to like what Paul says. In fact Paul is contradicting himself constantly – the mental gymnastics it takes to put out club propaganda will always lead you there.

  20. NEGANON2 @ 9:16 AM,

We can agree on a lot, I tend to be a cynic, especially where Scottish Football is concerned.

For instance, I think, like you, the Hampden thing is a scam.

I also think like CCB that Celtic have to make a bid.

I see pragmatism, you may well see collusion.

Now on the point of Dembele, who knows?

As I said in my points to earlier and my reply to BMCUW @ 9:12 AM, I can see how the Dembele situation might well occur.

Was Brendan right to state he’s not focussed. Mibees Aye, Mibees No, but the fact is we would have noticed Dembele not playing and the questions would be asked.

    I found him refreshingly honest.

Now when CD stated Dembele wanted away was this a step too far? Possibly. Did Dembele’s allies have the right to put his view to Chris Sutton? Absolutely.

Then we have Paul67, responding to Chris S… then we have Brendan obviously working in the background to diffuse the situation. Then making, what looks very much like a statement agreed by all.

Ok, not a great scenario but I can understand it.

What I can’t understand is where you extrapolate that Celtic “cleverly” contrived a plan to sell Dembele, like your attack on Auldheid t’uther day you seem to take 1+1 and make 5.

For someone who was so rational and often right, it seems absurd.

As far as Paul67 is concerned, this is between you and he, he’s invited you to speak to him and the Board – you had your reasons not to…

We have both been on here long enough to know CQN was set up to support Celtic and negate negative spin.

Over the years he certainly has become aligned with the Board. He avoids a lot of controversial subjects unless, I suspect, he’s let of the leash.

So we know where he’s coming from, we know he can be questioned and alternative viewpoints made. He gives us that platform.

After all, I’m pretty sure I was the first to use the term managing expectations in a “transfer” article:)

Keep it rational, keep it civil is the way I post now…

How do you know his agent isn’t touting him? You seem 100% in your assertion, would be interested to know how this is so.

Assuming you answer the above, what is it that leads to your only conclusion that Celtic want to cash in?

If Celtic are looking to cash in, so what. It’s their prerogative. Perhaps they see an injury prone striker who’s not here for the long term, who’s value is depreciating and have decided to sell now, if their valuation is met. His contribution in the 40 competitive games to date this season has been minimal, especially compared to last season.

I hope he stays but if he goes, get a good price and move on. We’ve lost a lot better strikers than Moussa.

  23. BobbyM

I can understand ex players who are still working in the media to say feck all, their income depends on them toeing the party line, but ones who don’t…

Players talk to each other and I’m sure part of the reason some don’t want to come to us is the lack of protection they will get from referees.

The last club official that spoke out was Dr John, and boy he sure did speak out, he told them in no uncertain terms that ” Those Days Were Gone” at the time we had them by the short and curlies, he also mentioned the dossier, they were running scared, then silence, who silenced him and for why, that bothers me big time.

    HH

  24. Chair bhoy one of the things I always look for is motivation. Why is someone behaving the way they do.

Take Chris Davies. There is no way he just decided to say what he did. That is not the way he operates. He was instructed to say what he said.

    Why?

The only logical conclusion I can co,e to, particularly because there were no bids on the table, to invite bids.

    Why?

    Celtic want to sell?

    Why?

Well the Board want the money.

Why wait till late in the window ?

Because the board don’t want to spend the money.

    Why?

    The hotel.

Now of course I could be wrong but then I can’t see clear line of site between action and motivation.

The club is in a difficult situation re our strikers,no doubt about it. In fact, there are question marks being raised all over the pitch. But if Brendan is going to stick to one up front, there are players gonna be unhappy, players lacking game time,a lack of rhythm up front due to personnel changes.

Do we need four at the back? Should we play 3-5-2? Should Scott Sinclair not count as a striker in any formation anyway?

If he has planned for two years from Moussa,he was correct to take Odsonne on trial. But the downside is plain to see with the system Brendan plays.

He can only find out how good Odsonne is at the expense of Leigh and Moussa.

Not an easy one to resolve.

  27. This notion that Dembele is some delicate little flower that need ‘protection’ from the big bad scottish defenders amuses me. He will get the same treatment anywhere he goes. Its up to him how he deals with it. Only last weekend McCarthy at Everton suffered a double fracture, it can happen anywhere.

Dembele injured himself chasing a lost cause of a ball, thats how he done his hamstring. Or was it the big bad Hampden pitch, heard that on here recently too.

You’re bang out of order with that,#The Celtic Football and Athletic Company’, died bullshit. Ive had this argument with plenty of huns. The only thing that happened is we changed from a Private limited Company to a Public limited Company. Just the same as all the Clubs in the English Premier did.

A long time ago, you and me had a bet, £50 to the celtic graves society, that you lost and didn’t pay, so I won’t bet with you about this, but how much cash are you convinced that celtic will pay towards the hotel? All of it, 50%?
