Relief and despair at Hearts CVA success

989

There is a degree of relief (in some quarters) mixed with surprise that Hearts creditors have agreed to a CVA, allowing the club to exit administration.  Although administration seems to be a natural state for many in Scottish football, remarkably few have subsequently gone to the wall in the last 100 years.

Third Lanark perished in 1967, an exception during many decades of solvent behaviour.  Airdrieoneans (not to be confused with the current club by that name, which is the renamed and relocated Clydebank FC) were liquidated in 2002, with the chastising words of creditor Sir David Murray ringing in their ears.  Oh how well irony played its hand.

Murray’s own club, Rangers (not to be confused with the current club by that name), were next to be liquidation after creditor, HMRC, stuck by their published rules and rejected a proposed CVA.

Apart from this, a remarkable series of campaigns, such as ‘Well worth saving’ and ‘Save the Jags’ has seen supporters step forward and find the money to save their club from that ominous fate.

There appears to couple of rules if you want to escape liquidation.  Try to ensure 75% of your creditor value is owed to shareholder-creditors or the bank.  Many clubs survive on directors’ loan accounts, which are ultimately forgiven in administration.  Banks too have been reluctant to kill the local totem, with good commercial reason.

The major thing to avoid appears to be breaking tax law. HMRC are prevented by its own terms of business from forgiving tax debt which has been run up through illegal tax evasion.  This was the case at (original) Rangers, who conceded some of their tax dealings were not legal during 2012’s Lower Tier Tribunal.  The balance of cases are disputed and currently subject to an Upper Tier Tribunal.

Hearts success makes for an interesting SPFL Championship race this season.  With three games to go Dundee hold a two point advantage over Hamilton.  The winner will go up, second place will face a play-off, but neither club will fancy fighting Hearts for promotion next season.  I can imagine the despair elsewhere to the news that Hearts will be a Championship club next season.  Poor Ally will need to get his game together.

Remember, John Hughes will be on CQN tomorrow morning.  Tune in with your questions for him.

    GOOD MORNING YOGI….

    Two questions

    1. 1965 JAN did the team know that jock was taking over before the 8-0 mauling of aberdeen (5 for you) and if so what fired the team up as the results that jan were not the best.

    2. centre forward or left wing ? (i didn’t care what position ,as long as you played)

    Hail HAIL

  2. LiviBhoy - God bless wee Oscar on

    John Hughes

A question maybe not for John Hughes but for anyone who can answer it.

Probably common knowledge but I don’t know the answer.

Where did the nickname Yogi come from?

    Easy starter!

    LB

  3. SFTBs

Basically, you have to be two-faced to be a manager!

I could not lie to players. If I thought they were no good I would tell them.

Management just wasn’t for me. Actually, I cover the managerial aspect in my book.

  4. John,

Firstly, thank you for the many cherished memories and goals and congratulations on the book, it is long overdue.

    A few questions…

In the 1965 League Cup Final you took and scored both penalties (against Billy Ritchie). A month previously you had also converted a penalty against him at Ibrox. Why were you on penalty duty that day (Ian Young had recently scored a couple)?

What would you consider your best Celtic goal (not necessarily the most important)?

To my recollection there are a few candidates…

Morton at Cappielow in the 1964 Scottish Cup

Dundee at Dens Park in the 1965 League Cup section match

Slovan Bratislava away in the 1965 European Cup Winner’s Cup quarter final.

Finally John, would I be correct in recalling that you scored direct from a corner v Montrose in the 1961 Scottish cup tie at Celtic Park?

    All the best

  5. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    Good morning, John.

No questions, as you can’t question an enigma.

I am of the same vintage as yourself and wish to thank you for drawing every possible emotion from me during your wonderful Celtic career.

I have an abiding memory of your crew cut head crashing the ball into thebThird Lanark net at Celtic Park, in 1962, I think.

    Keep well.

  6. To Martin

Jim Baxter was one of the finest players I have ever seen. He was magnificent during the early sixties when he tortured Celtic.

I am sure our kids are registered like us.(my mate handles that)

As HT says we always get ours through Celtic

and always takes tkts for semi finals(kids included) and always seem to do well for

    final tkts.

  8. Morning YOGI and H!H!

What was your favourite solo goal?

My favourite Yogi goal was your ‘solo’ effort in the Scottish Cup-tie v Morton where you waltzed the length of the frozen pitch past 7/8 players before slotting home.

  9. Keepthehighballslow on

Don’t post too often but wanted to extend my thanks to Oscars mum Leona for updating us on the site of that brave wee boys progress.

If prayers were an effective drug the wee boy would be better tomorrow.

It really brings it home how fortunate the majority of us are to have reasonably good health.

Thanks Leona and god bless you, wee Oscar and the rest of the family.

  10. Paddy Turner

Played outside-left against Hibs for the first hour and was switched to centre-forward where I scored two goals and we won 5-3.

Baseball boots were Billy McNeill’s and I returned them.

There’s nothing I really want to ask you-apart from “jooost how does it feel to play for Celtic?”

What I want to say is a great big thank you for what you and your pals achieved for us.

I don’t even remember seeing us lose for my first three or four years watching Celtic.

Great times, great team, great men one and all.

    Cheers,fella!

  12. Yogi,

    2 questions if that’s ok

    1) when you and wispy were transferred down south (Crystal Palace?) was it a case that you HAD to go or did you have a choice?

    2) is my memory fading or did you score a 95 yard wonder strike on your debut for them? ( maybe not 95 yards but it seemed like it)

  13. Livi Bhoy

Where did the nickname Yogi come from?

Actually, it was because Yogi always told his little sidekick Boo Boo that he wwas smarter than the average Ranger. And, of course, I was!

  14. Good Morning John,

back then I knew you as Big Yogi, thanks for the many Highs you gave us then and for the lows aaagh, lol. At times you were like a Ballet Dancer haring up the wing, an awesome sight. What’s your memories of your interaction with us guys who inhabited the Jungle? On many occasions we would sing your praises one moment and then hurl insults when you fell over something that wasn’t there. I recall one occasion when you came over to the Jungle and said “if you think you can do better, come on here and i’ll stand in there, cue roars of laughter from the Jungle Tims.

    Thanks again John.

    HH

  15. LiviBhoy - God bless wee Oscar on

We were given a heads up the other day….

John could you have done a Judas and signed for Rangers?

What did you make of the whole situation when he did that to Celtic?

It was discussed in depth the other day. Bytheway how did the nickname Yogi come about????

  16. Phyllis Dietrichson on

    Question for Yogi.

Was your goal for Crystal Palace, which won Goal of the Season in England, your best goal ever?

  17. Yogi

never saw you play or at least can’t remember but i did have a Crystal Palace top

and a football card with you on it if I remember correctly.

My uncle who took me to a lot of

my football when i was young talked fondly of you when he saw it.

Did you win goal of the season with them ?

  18. Paddy Turner

Yes, I recall beating Airdrie 9-0 at Celtic Park, but it was a Saturday and not midweek. Frank Haffey took a penalty-kick which was saved by Roddie McKenzie. I thinnk I scored a hat-trick that day.

  19. John Hughes

I remember the Ibrox game when you – as a 17 year old – gave Baillie his worst nightmare; the 5-1 game when you terrorized them without real boots; the 5-0 game when you knocked Aberdeen off their top spot in the League; the Leeds game when Charlton gave up on trying to cope with you.

So many great memories. Your transfer is right up there with Feyenoord as one of big Jock’ s biggest blunders.

  20. Bognor Bhoy 1965 January

Yes, the Celtic players knew Big Jock was coming back to the club.

In fact, I thought about asking for a transfer vefore Jock had a word in my ear.

Of course, he officially took over in March and the rest, as they say, is history!

  21. the long wait is over on

    John Hughes Question.

John – welcome to CQN and thanks for taking the time to answer some questions.

    Jinky or Henrik ?

Who would you rather have had in your team?

    Cheers

    TLWIO

  22. Good morning John,

Too young to remember you play for us but my old man always rated you highly, which is praise indeed from him.

In a day when it is reported that the average wage is £100k per week at Man Citeh…… do you wish the Bosman ruling and TV cash took place a lot earlier e.g. 60’s?

Oh and would it have changed you and the other players relationship with the fans as there appears to be a lot of disconnect in the game.

    yours in Celtic,

    Yogi

    Firstly, welcome to CQN.

    Two questions if I may.

    1) What did happen to the Seville money? :-)

    2) In order of preference who in your opinion are the 3 best players ever to have worn the Hoops?

    Thank you.

  24. John Hughes

Did you think the Racing goalkeeper over reacted to your honest attempt to regain possession in Montevideo?

    Hail Hail

  25. Bognor Bhoy

I cover this in the book, too. I thought I did okay in my first four years playing at centre-forward. I scored 88 goals in four years.

But Big Jock spotted something in my play and he moved me to the left wing.

The easy answer is that I enjoyed both positions.

Just so long as I was in the first team.

  26. After reading about Oscar all else pales in comparison

Enjoy you beer in Oz Tom. Hope your own pain is even slightly diminished.

Enjoy your time off Jobo. Assume weary when observations will be continued!

Yogi. I was at that Airdrie game you got the hat trick in. Am I right in saying that the pitch was covered in snow and the ball was Orange?

Did you get to keep it?

  28. Gordon

I was the designated penalty-kick taker. Ian Young took a couple, but then missed a game through injury.

Yes, I recall scoring with a corner-kick against Montrose.

    I think that was a one-off.

  29. Morning Yogi!

I seem to remember you had another nickname – ‘the touchline terror.’

    Favourite goal?

Mine is your header against Leeds in 1970. Fantastic night!

You are a true Celtic legend!

    HH!!

  30. John Hughes,

Welcome to CQN! Great to have another Celtic legend on here … to add to the many posters who think they are legends.

My questions: Who were the very best of the many great players you played with? And the hardest opponents you ever faced?
