Remarkable distractions need to end

424

The worst way to end a bad week was for a loose-mouthed agent to pitch up at Lennoxtown on Friday before setting off on a rant because Brendan Rodgers was not available to him at a time he wanted.  We had a remarkable week of distractions in and around the dressing room.  These things often correlate with a poor result.

Brendan would be pleased to get his players out of the country yesterday, giving him two days to focus the squad on the matter in hand – tomorrow night’s Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens.  This is where the manager earns his money.

Only a unified squad will have a chance of getting the required result against AEK.  The better players in the first leg against AEK were these settled at Celtic for the long-term – McGregor, Brown, Tierney, Ntcham, Forrest.  Tactical conversations will be needed, but the first thing Brendan needs to infuse into the squad is a laser-like focus.

  1. I said on the last item,I have never in the past paid any attention to Celtic Boards. When I started going to the games with my Father,he ranted and raved about the Kellys, and the Whites,as did his mates, much like many do on here about the present Board. As I grew and started going with my mates,to every game,I can never recall any conversations about Board matters, right up until Wee Fergus appeared. After that ,same again, only ever interested in watching the team,Taking great enjoyment from it.Heartaches and great joy.Seems the Internet has thrown up many thousands of Celtic fans who now ,no longer seem to take the same joy of Celtic, but would rather wallow in their angst over the politics of the club.

The younger fans,I can accept,to a degree, but the older ones, who went through the late 50s,early 60s,and the sheer ineptness of the Boards of those days, astonish me.Again from the middle 70s for a decade we were run abominably.Think back to the transfers of those days.Horrendous.

I still dont remember the kind of vitriol aimed at the present Board, being in evidence for most of these years. We just got on with following the team we loved.Different times, and no Internet,I know, but some should follow the line in the song a bit more,

    “If you know the history”.

Maybe things wont look so black to you. They dont to me.

Read the following then have a look at the teams who have qualified for this years champions league already.

I would forecast our turnover to be getting over the £100m mark this year and with that we get ever closer to the lists below.

If we want to grow again and have a chance of competing we need to pick up champions league football this year and the £50m prize and pick up coefficient points that mean we don’t need to run the qualification gauntlet in future years.

  6. I don’t think that’s an elbow from Scott Brown and neither did Naismith. If he did he’d have gone down rolling around like a stuck pig…

Scott puts his arm out and slightly up anticipating the bang from Naismith which duly comes his way. Forwards do it all the time when backing in. There is no intent to make contact with the elbow.

GFTB…the greed is obscene. One month’s wage would set most of us up for life…there are honest players giving their absolute all every single game who won’t earn that in a year…if it wasn’t for my addiction and love for Celtic I think I could easily turn my back on the game. I used to love football as a sport, now it goes no further than the Bhoys…didn’t watch any EPL this weekend…

A further quirk in the rules:

If sent off in a cup competition for an offence meriting a two-match ban, then the player serves one match in the next competition match his team plays and one in the next cup competition match his club is involved in.

Overly complicated if you ask me.

It seems to me that if we have a commercial director bringing in £10m a year from Databet and a football manager increasing the value of the footballing operation by a similar or greater amount each year then its worthwhile trying to find a solution that makes the best of both their individual talents.

However as Phil points out the commercial wins ride on the back of the footballing wins, but the footballing wins need commercial wins for a stable platform to perform on.

In strictly business terms the incentives for both BR and PL should recognise the inter dependency between the two and that should be written into what produces their bonuses.

Personalities will always clash at some point, but if the reasons for clashes can be minimised by reviewing the rewards system then we supporters might be saved the “WTF?” natural reaction every third or second season.

The Chines say every crisis (big or small) is an opportunity and this one provides such an opportunity.

This is a business issue, the business is football and division is bad for business.

This situation requires a bit of business analysis to propose the best way forward and that might have to mean changing some aspects of what has worked in the past to secure a more stable future.

Stability is good for business so its good for football.

(Stability means more than financial stability btw, it involves relationships, communication inwards and outwards, good administration management and the internal business structures need to enable and promote and continually encourage all of that.)

Someone should inform UEFA/FIFA that a national football association has decided to ignore the universal laws of the game.

  19. Watched the Manchester City match yesterday at Arsenal, a comfy 2-0 win for them. However, what caught my eye was the number of mistakes they made on the ball in their own half, gk, defender, midfielders all giving the ball away in dangerous areas under little pressure. Arsenal weren’t good enough to take advantage and maybe it was just a bad day for Citeh, but it was incredible. Definitely food for thought when considering Jozo’s misplaced pass on Saturday.

I mentioned a week or two back that the company contracted to show Scottish league football overseas, MP&Silva, was going down the plughole, and so verily, it has came to pass. Present owners paid way over the top for the company itself, when they bought it off its’ original, Italian I think, owners. There are some who would baulk at buying a media company from Italians, but your host will be glad to hear I am not one of them. Good news is the the SPFL contract was only for ten years, and by showing Heart’s performance at the weekend should have the buyers queuing up around the old proverbial block.

Base point — football vs Commercial does not stack up.

You talk about the commercial in absolute terms — speculation of £10miil this season.

You then talk about the football in relative terms — £10mill improvement in squad value.

Apples vs oranges to big up PL.

The question you should have asked is the relative regarding the commercial element.

What did we take in last season vs what we will take in this season.

If We now have a notional or speculated extra £3 / 5mill in commercial income this season the question then becomes what do we do with it?

Do we improve the squad or do we cut ticket prices for the support?

Or do we store it away for a rainy day — surely not …

We are currently doing a rain dance.

As for the rest my thoughts are that the football element comes first.

Commercial and of the off field activities come second.

Some of it is Astro turf and some of it is the easily led.

However it is a manufactured construct by the exec level at CP.

Ties in with an earlier disagreement.
