Remarkable singlemindedness of O’Riley

245

The arrival of Matthew Sean O‘Riley (surely, nominative determinism at work), our fifth signing of the window, looks like another incredible bit of business by Celtic.  Like Moussa Dembele, he signed senior forms with Fulham as a 16-year-old.  Whereas Moussa experienced regular first team football in his third season there, Matt found opportunities rare, so declined a three year contract  in 2020 and left the club.

That contract offered the then 19-year-old financial security.  Instead, he went looking for first team football elsewhere and was without a club for six months.  He spent the time training with MK Dons, whom he eventually joined in January last year.

This is a remarkable example of singlemindedness, I cannot recall anyone else in the game going without money in the hope that they better their long-term prospects.  At the time he would have been asked, “What if you get injured?”  It was a risk that had a significant probability of not paying off.

I love this attitude.  Matt will enjoy life at Celtic, but be clear, he is here because we have made him a career enhancing offer – not a career ceiling.  Like so many before him, he will want it all in the EPL one day, which is actually a good thing.

MK Dons fans and EFL analysis rave about his abilities.  He has been a star there and was destined to go higher soon.  Dons confirmed we relieved them of his services due to a buy-out clause (I expect the same is true of this month’s Japanese imports), reportedly £1.5m.

Michael Nicholson is playing a blinder in his first transfer window.

A club requires 3 or more players to be called-up for international duty before it can request a postponement.

Looks as if we are going to be without our most creative midfielder and down to one untried centre for a few crucial games.

    Not ideal.”

Not much chance of you ever testing positive :-)))

  5. ‘re Clancy. The most contentious issue was the penalty he didn’t give Aberdeen.

Despite this, he still managed to break the first rule in Scottish football. Do no offend rangers/sevco football club.

  6. FWIW

I didn`t think McGregor`s mad dash was a penalty nor did I think Kent should have got a second yellow.

I was and remain certain the Morelos handball was a penalty. Jonny Hayes hitting the defender`s face? I just don`t know.

So, maybe not a GREAT night for Clancy but hardly worthy of a letter of complaint. If other clubs in Scotland were to behave in the same fashion, the Mount Florida Post Office would be very busy.

Is that really true? If so,and if par for the course, they will only have had five reds in their whole history.Must be another world record.

Since 2018-19 Rangers in the Premiership have had 21 goals that should’ve been chopped off allowed to stand, more penalties than any other club in Scotland, until Tuesday never had a player sent off since 2019 yet have the audacity to complain about the standard of officiating…

  24. THEBHOYWITHMCGRAININHISSIDE @ 2:14 AM,

Thank you for the considered reply, which was more than I gave you, my sincere apologies for that.

It is a complex matter and by and large that’s what I meant.

Now I’m talking about the current sectarian situation in Scotland, where you come from I believe there is legislation on “sectarianism”.

So it has to be specific.

Now I’m aware that the way the sectarian narrative is skewed in Scotland it is difficult to understand what it means.

The Orange Order and members of associated pipe bands would baulk at my suggestion and you seem to agree, that Orange Walks are sectarian.

Likewise Republican sympathisers would baulk at the idea of rebel songs being sectarian, yet for similar reasons they are.

If we want a song at Celtic Park debate fine yet the “our songs aren’t sectarian and their’s are” debate is a nonsense in my book.

They get prosecuted for their songs/chants of hate and so would we.

    Thanks again for the reply.

    Hail Hail

  25. SFtBs @ 12:54 AM,

Maybe I’m beginning to see why we differ, you seem to be completely blind to the locality and communal requirement when it comes to sectarian issues.

England and Scotland are definitely NOT in the same locality, therefore can not be considered sectarian.

The Spurs and Arsenal rivalry is a footballing rivalry, there is no different communal identity between the supporters, therefore can not be considered sectarian.

The Non Zionist Jews v Zionist Jews come from the same communal identity therefore can not be considered sectarian.

Whatever your notion of sectarian and as I said in my reply to THEBHOYWITHMCGRAININHISSIDE,. .. I’m aware that the way the sectarian narrative is skewed in Scotland it is difficult to understand what it means.

Consider the locality and communal element because it is fundamental to what sectarian means and by ignoring that fact you are all over the shop.

    Enjoy the game…

    Hail Hail
