Rhetorical magic from old Lumley-troubler

1149

Old Lumley-troubled used a classic rhetorical technique yesterday. Give your target audience lots of points to consider which you know they will agree with; build empathy, get heads nodding, fists banging on tables, then slip in the line you are trying to sell. As a piece of prose, you have to respect the statement. This guy, or his writer, has not only read the Greeks, he’s understood their importance.

If Sir David is right, Rangers issued no side contracts, all non-discretionary payments to players in connection to football were registered, if the redacted contract which appeared in The Sun in March was a piece of fiction, if the prima facie evidence presented by Duff and Phelps was an error, he and his soon to be liquidated former club have nothing to worry about.

If Brown, Wanyama and Ledley are in the middle it offers good protection, height and threat at corners and free kicks and it allows Commons and Samaras space to cause them problems.

    Happy with that team.

Good height, pace and defensive cover on the bench as well.

We cannot criticize Neil for poor selection before the game. This is probably our strongest side right now.

  2. So not 4-5-1, but 4-4-1-1 with KC playing off Hoops, Sammy as left wing, very attacking, but Broony wont play as a winger so slightly more defensive than last week, should also allow Matthews to get up and possibly Joe to cover for Izzy and Sammy on the left with Big Vic there.

  3. Finished painting fence. TIme fir a quick beer and dinner and then the game. 2-0 Celtic.

  4. If Brown isn’t fully fit why didn’t Lenny go with Kayal from the start instead? I would always have Kayal as one of my first picks in a European game. His passing game is good and he has the composure to play in these sorts of matches- sometimes I worry about Brown’s link up play.

The last euro away tie we played on plastic pitch was in Moscow? Required result achieved!!

Good luck Bhoys and please no crazy big Dan moments!!

  6. Happy with the line up, hope commons plays out on the left, with Sammi partnering Hooper, would be really nice to score an early goal rather than losing one for a change, but would also settle for 0-0.

CELTIC: Forster; Matthews, Rogne, Mulgrew, Izaguirre; Brown, Wanyama, Ledley, Commons; Samaras, Hooper

  8. Something to take yer mind off the game for a moment or two….

I don’t know who coined the phrase, but the fine sentiment expressed in ‘travel broadens the mind’ has never really applied to me. I’ve found that in fact it tends to concentrate the attention on the immediate requirements of surviving another day lost in the Kalahari, running around with a sleeping bag over my head to keep the -30 degs C glacial temperatures of northern Canada at bay, or as happened today, making me really angry that I had walked along the Clyde to Rutherglen, done a left over to Cambuslang only to find out that I had left my wallet at home.

Fortunately the intrepid itinerant always takes his camera with him or her and with the sharp eye of a hawk on the trail of an unsuspecting field mouse and the imagination of someone who still took his boots to Celtic games till he was in his late thirties, we are rarely without a scene, frame or event to divert attention from the pangs of hunger, slake of thirst or sting of lactic acid (or in the case of Cambuslang – the petrifying stare of rejects from the cast of ’28 days later’).

Today was no exception; for as I passed back into the precincts of civilisation I found a couple of moments to freeze in time; fleeting reminders of acquaintances now no longer with us, and oddly enough of just what was in the ‘alleged’ side lettuce and with Extra Bacon and Tomato – sorry I mean side letters and Employee Benefit Trusts.

We’re here at the corner of Argyle Street and the wee street that goes round the back of WH Smith (I think it is an extension of Miller Street, but who knows what they call it now).

Anyway what we find here is an emporium that in a spiritually satisfying epitomises the connection between sticky, fattening nutrition free garbage and the shop that used to occupy this spot – the now defunct Rangers/JJB venture into the provision of outsize football tops for outsize people. Perhaps the Govan Galoots should have gone into a joint enterprise with American Candy thus outselling Millets and Blacks of ‘tents for the discerning yeti’!

    American Candy

Mind you it’s not quite as good as the shop that replaced the Rangers outlet at Glasgow Airport…..Knickerbox. The connection in this case was even more profound….after all what would you find inside both a Rangers top and a pair of knickers?

    No answer required.

Meanwhile as I walked in a full circle back through the east end I came across solid evidence of the snide underhand contract that Coisty has been keeping up his jumper – and you thought he was obese!!

To supplement his earnings, the old Rangers board provided him not only with a lucrative sideline, but also with looking after the replacement club’s hotel and accommodation facilities right next door.

No wonder they can attract the stars – if you zoom in you can see the players enjoying a bit of R&R.

Linda Blair Morgan did some pretty weird stuff in the ole Exorcist, so representing assorted Horribles wouldn’t take her out of her comfort zone.

Was scrabbling around for local boozers in Gran Canaria anxious that I might miss the game tonight, and lo! The Hoops Bar, Puerto Rico. Fantastic! Me of little faith….

Taxi, cold beer, and 2-0 to the Celts. Perfect day.

  12. Personally would not have played Sammi in midfield today. We need to be very strong and tight defensively and he is a liability in this regard. The only place I would have played him is up front on his own. He is better at holding the ball up than Hooper. Apart from that, there is enough quality in this team to conquer the plastic pitch and win comfortably.

  13. A very good side, but with those players I hope Sammi plays on the left, with Commons behind Hooper.

  18. The other day we had big bad “Wild Eck” telling us in frontier language and Wild West witticism that he would banjo anyone who took away his medals- add him to the other colonial types from Fort Paranoia and the EBT Gang: Calamity McCoist, Bummer Boone, Buffalo heid Jardine, Jedediah Johnstone, Ringo “Hurricane” Hateley and Curly Chuckles Green…what is it with this scrotum of crooks ( a collective noun for crooks- HT) and their lynch mob manifest destiny mind set?

Every time someone either tells the truth about the bankrobbers and tax dodgers, opposes them or want to (shock!) apply the rules to them on equal terms, they get on their toy horse and ride off to Rio Petted Lip, screaming like big lassies: “they are a bunch of vicious venomous bigots…their jealous of us because we’re the people…bladabladabladabla…”…why can’t these crackerheads just accept its not all a conspiracy by them Fenian injuns? ( Now I have a picture of Lenny and Lawwell with tricolour face war paint on). Hopefully with the Ibrox Trash Trotters and their newly formed BrittaniaWinos (a bit like the Madrid Galacticos except a lot pisher) packing three quarters of their stadium, and made up from the flotsam and jetsum at the bottom of the SPL barrel and “hammering” part-timers, we might hear less from them. Although I doubt it.

  19. Hi All,

Im working in Barnsley tonight and looking for a CSC or pub that may have the game on. Can anyone advise?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Good team selection.

If we get a goal early the tie is over in my opinion…….. this team have to come and score and when we played at pace at Celtic Park they looked ropey indeed.

Same score— 2-1 to Celtic will do nicely.

BBC website despite having a link to MW football coverage actually links to newsdrive. Accidental or not?
