Rhetorical magic from old Lumley-troubler

1149

Old Lumley-troubled used a classic rhetorical technique yesterday. Give your target audience lots of points to consider which you know they will agree with; build empathy, get heads nodding, fists banging on tables, then slip in the line you are trying to sell. As a piece of prose, you have to respect the statement. This guy, or his writer, has not only read the Greeks, he’s understood their importance.

If Sir David is right, Rangers issued no side contracts, all non-discretionary payments to players in connection to football were registered, if the redacted contract which appeared in The Sun in March was a piece of fiction, if the prima facie evidence presented by Duff and Phelps was an error, he and his soon to be liquidated former club have nothing to worry about.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if Gavin Rae’s agent was that man who left the SFA to look after his sick parents then went to those sick parents (or as you and me know them the Sportsound team) then left them to rejoin his former club as some kind of director with the Motherwell born Billionaire with wealth off the radar?

Or was it just Willie McKay super-agent?

If accountants are lawyers are removed from the tax-paying process, and everyone simply pays the percentage due according to their income, life would be a lot simpler.

    And fairer.

Being rich entitles you to employ people who can ensure that you don’t have to pay your dues to the system in which you operate.

Now,if you disagree that that premise is wrong, that is your affair.

But I think you will find yourself in a minority.

Simplify the taxcode. Then the majority of us-you included,I expect, would pay less.

Rioskorrie -I can see the attraction of tryin’ to level the ole playin’ field, like in the NFL where the worst team gets first pick in the draft, and the Superbowl winners the last.

Also given the recent record of Scottish teams in Europe ie all out by August, I can’t see how the 2 squad idea is sustainable.

It struck me as wholly counter intuitive, but now I think about it……I still think it stinks! lol

Why on earth would a team want to win a competition that sees them demoted to the bottom tier as a reward. You propose them still playing in europe, therefore maintaining a team that could conceivably only play 4 games or less if results go against them. What if we have 2 qualifying spots for the CL? why stop there, why not relegate the Europa league and intertoto cup competitors too!

A splendid weekend was had in Donegal with Mrs AB & junior ABs.. I love the ” laws” of Donegal as I pointed out to 2 of my BHOYS.. Being driven around by a 16 y.o driver is beyond what even this old bhoy finds acceptable..

I was talking to a Sevco fan this morning. He told me he was delighted Germany had won more gold medals than Poland at the Olympics.

When I asked him why he said; “We should never forget Poland invaded Germany in 1939 and the destruction that followed as a result of their aggression.”

“Fair enough,” I said. “At least Germany won the war though.”

“Aye. That’s right,” he said squinting at his brown brogues. “Rangers are the same club by-the-way.”

“You mean the club that were European Champions 10 times?”

    “Aye.”

  9. Celticboy 72 – re Olympic Games.

I had no problem leaving the Olympic Park last night. Left the stadium about 9.25pm after the 1,500m final, the last event. Big, big crowd but I was always moving towards Stratford Tube Station. Well signposted for Stratford International(Javelin train to St Pancras), Central and Jubilee Lines. I was heading on the Central line in the opposite direction from the centre of town and was home by 10.15pm in time to watch Gabby!

I have tickets for the Handball tonight so will miss the Tic match. I don’t feel very confident of a result, hope that I’m wrong.

Interestingly given the innumerate journalists at the Telegraph calling out Google’s tax practices, the Telegraph is owned by the Barclay brothers, who live on the tax haven of Sark.

Good for them – it’s perfectly legal to structure their affairs so as to minimise their tax liability.

Meanwhile, the hypocritical champagne socialists over at The Guardian – who are even more volubly determined to prod their noses into other people’s business and moralise over tax than their Torygraph counterparts – use a range of wheezes to avoid paying tax, such as using offshore Cayman Islands companies and a wheen of other aggressive tax schemes.

My sympathy is with the guys at Google who are inventing the future and enriching is all in the process, rather than with the dead-tree-based purveyors of misinformation in the old media.

Hopefully the funny papers go out of business soon so their journalists can find more productive uses for their time, such as flipping hamburgers.

In a previous post, this blog attempted to help the SPL’s investigation team to establish a prima facie case against Rangers. Obviously, we have no way of knowing if this was helpful in moving this case along, but it might help the media and anyone investigating the case against Rangers if we provide a road-map to just one example of what really happened. Please note that this example has been selected for its clarity rather than the importance of the player. Many of the cases, especially the earlier ones when Rangers tended to be more concerned with obscuring their actions, are quite complex. The SPL’s investigators should ensure that they see the documentation referenced below.

Gavin Rae signed a three and a half-year contract with Rangers on 1 January 2004. This contract- the official one filed with the SFA & SPL- lists an annual wage of £260,000. Curiously, the contract does not mention appearance money or bonuses. On the very same day, 1 January 2004, Rangers provided Gavin Rae with a letter that said that money would be deposited in a sub-trust of the Murray Group Management Remuneration Trust on his behalf. These amounts total £336,000. The letter also said that Rae would receive £1,000 as an appearance fee for every competitive first-team game played. From February 2004 to July 2007, Rae received five payments totalling £336,000. He also received the following amounts through the EBT for appearances: £11,000 (2003/04); £8,000 (2005/06); £20,000 (2006/07). The appearance money matches his first team appearances for Rangers.

canamalar – They are given access to one of the richest markets in the world and you say that market should appreciate them and they are justified paying more for tax avoision than tax.

    “Given access”?

You make it sound like HM Government is The Mafia, and the UK is its “territory”, in which businesses should gratefully pay their protection money for being “allowed” to remain in operation, which is accurate but probably not what you intended.

Oh right, all that wealth creation your taking about, is on finding ways to avoid contributing to the market, got you now.

If there is no poverty like ignorance, you are a distressingly impecunious man.

You’re accusing Google of not “contributing to the market”?

I’d love to see the break down of certain other EBT receivers in full – especially the ones with the largest sums.

  19. Don / kdc,

Like a lot of my “ideas” it’s the half baked kernel of something that I can never seem able to quite express fully (the Reacto-lite glass eye being one that springs to mind. Ha, ha), so bear with me.

I’m not advocating we’d have two teams, moreso a squad which used the League games moreso to bring players on/try things out with the main focus on the European side of things (I guess, I’m going towards what’s the point of Scottish League Fitba here, eh)?

kdc – The team winning the SPL would not be “Demoted”, the reward would be in form of League fees commensurate with what the winning team would expect had they stayed in the SPL. This money (ie. increased attendances at lower league games) after all is getting spread throughout the League.

…I KNOW there’s a kernel of an idea there, I just can’t express it right.

    NURSE !!!!

  20. Watching the boxing just there, and Katie Taylor cruising into the Final – The Daily Telegraph is under siege for claiming she was British. The BBC commentator just said his favourite retort came from Fergus Murphy, who said: “Dear Daily Telegraph. Katie Taylor is IRISH. However, please feel free to claim Ronan Keating, Jedward and Louis Walsh” – Quality :-)

  22. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    philvis..,

given access, you interpret correctly, of course it should greatfully pay their protection money, that is exactly what it is. The whole idea behind tax is and was a protection racket, which is why business was always charged more, it allows them to operate in the British market place, a stable market place, made stable by the protection racket.

I’ve not accused google of doing anything, however you are trying a case for them, without any knowledge about the case, or whether they have made a fair contribution or not.

Your only requirement to make a case is they are a big business and should be treated differently on that basis.

If we were to parachute the best team in the top division down to the bottom division at the end of each season, but, ensure their income was that of the champion team we just stifle any competition for and interest in the teams in the 3rd 2nd and 1st divisions that ar trying to compete with a club in each of those divisions with a massive financial advantage over them….

What about after playing everyone 3 times we split the league in two, ignore that some teams will have played the others twice with home advantage and in the end some might have 3 home games out of 4 in a season. Also lets ignore that the team in 7th could end up with more points than team in 6th, no-one will notice. We could also bring in a rule forcing teams to build stadiums they can’t fill and don’t need, that’ss stop any upstarts crashing the party and knocking one of tthe big boys off the gravy train….

    Nah, that couldn’t work, we’d be a laughing stock…….
