Samaras astonishing journey

557

Georgios Samaras journey over the last twelve months has been astonishing.  The player was subject to treatment by those who enjoying booing at the football and suffered the indignity of being subject to an exchange at last year’s AGM which must have made it difficult to rebuild confidence and form.

Now he is the most effective man in the team.  He was involved in six out of Celtic’s eight Champions League qualifier goals.  He has found his position, wide on the left, where he scores and creates more goals than he ever did as part of a forward two.  The space on the wing allows those long legs to stretch and get behind defenders.

I’m not paying too much attention to the scare stories which emerged from Latvia last night following his elbow injury, we will need to wait on the results of a scan to know the extent of the damage, but there is modest alarm ahead of our opening Champions League group game against Benfica in 11 days.

Yesterday’s omission of Forrest and Maloney brings back ‘unfond’ memories – e.g. Kenny Dalglish – great player though he was – got more caps than all the Lisbon Lions put together. The caps totals of Bobby Murdoch and Jimmy Johnstone , were nothing short of a national disgrace – matched only by the booing of Johnstone, McStay, McLair and others. Why bother?

  5. Life in perspective, thoughts and prayers to those who have lost the best friend they will ever have their mum

When left message for Jobo last night I did not notice another sad news. God bless you in difficult times.

  7. Good morning friends from ole EK where the weather today is beautifully calm and bright.

I’d have posted an hour ago btu wanted first to have a quick scroll back and I’m completely overwhelmed, but not in the least bit surprised, by all of your kind words. I started to make a ‘thank you’ list of individul names but very quickly rfan out of paper. But genuine thanks to everyone who took the time to mention my ddar old mammy.

Very strange to get to this morning’s postings and see consecutive posts from DBBIA and DJBEE just half an hour ago. Looks like we’re currently on the same time clock Bhoys!

Personally, I know I’ll be fine. Life goes on and my mammy wouldn’t want me toapproach it in any other way.

    Thanks again.

  8. Returning to the thorny issue about the paltry number of caps won by the Lisbon Lions, and their successors, I think it’s also worth mentioning how few POTY awards they won.

The only Lions to have won it were, Caesar (1965), Ronnie Simpson (1967) and Bobby Murdoch (1969)! The only other Celt to have won it during the 9iar era was George Connelly in 1973! Says it all really!

    Some things NEVER change!

I agree the lack of recognition for so many Celts always has been an outrage

Even Jimmy McGrory was snubbed and guys like Tommy McInally whom Willie Maley described as the most talented Celt received very few caps …jeezo McGrory created the Hampden roar in one of the few games he was picked v England and his inside forward partner was a ger who could never understand why he was denied the opportunity to play with a goal machine

    the selectors knew right enough!

When I was 15 I made a banner to take to Hampden to see Scotland off to Argentina 78- a huge inverted saltire with “MacARI GOES THROUGH YER LEGS” emblazoned across it. I got the idea from a banner I had seen at the FA cup final the previous year – a Man U fan had the similar wording ‘MACARI goes through yer legs…” I played about with the ‘Mac’ bit as a wee joke. At Hampden my mate and I were waving the banner as the team went ’round in an open top bus -A grown man -about 30 years old- walked up to me and spat in my face!! Clearly he did not think much of my banner.

Having said all that… The reason why I “bother” with it is because I refused to be bullied back then by anyone who tried to undermine the role Celtic and Celtic players have always and will continue to play in Scottish fitba..I still refuse to budge now.

I believe the small minded scumbags who try to undermine Celtic in Scotland are in a small but vocal-sometimes violent -minority. Nevertheless, most decent Scots don’t behave like that -they are fair minded and decent people … worthy & good neighbours.

Why should players like Aitken, McStay, Dalglish, McGrain and all the others before them Evans, McGrory, McNeil and the new guys like Jamesy and Tony Watt now who clearly want to represent their country ..not have, at least some, backing in the stands when they wear the blue of Scotland? I won’t desert them…judging by many comments on here over the years and people I met in pubs and at games …I am not alone in that view.

If you are a Celtic supporter and not Scottish, or if you are a Celtic supporter and Scottish but don’t like Scotland or the fitba team…fair enough each to their own. I have no problem with that at all and part of me understands where you are coming from.

However, at least show some respect to the many Celtic players and thousands of fans who follow Scotland, who refuse to be bullied and beaten away from supporting their country by a bunch of bigoted fools

I choose not to lie down to them and don’t allow them to hijack something bigger than them that belongs to everyone..that annoys them more than anything!

  10. Good morning Jobo, beautifully said, keep the weather reports coming I will rely on them in the coming winter months.

  11. When posted condolences for jobo had missed djbee and dbbia sad news thoughts and prayers with the family’s, the good memories off ur dear mothers will live long.. God bless

  12. Had the privilege once of listening to Jimmy Delaney descibe how he was dealt with by Struth the manager of Scotland at a game against the English

Met before game at St Enochs hotel Jimmy travelled by tram with his boots wrapped in brown paper, Rankers players in a clique, Anglos in a group, played match at Hampden 150,000, back to St Enochs hotel, after the speeches and meal the English team departed, Struth gave Delaney his money thanked him for his efforts but made it clear it was time for him to depart, only those such as the Rankers clique were to enjoy spending the SFA’s money

Glasgow’s green and white, untill the SFA are fit to represent the country will i support the XI in dark blue

In days of yore I think the St. Enoch’s Hotel was the pub of choice of a particular team once know as Rangers F.C.

Unfortunately for some Rangers F.C. went the way of Third Larnark F.C.

4-5 weeks, according to reports. Nightmare. THE player we couldn’t afford to lose for the European games.

IMO Lenny will have to limit his formations as a result – Sammi was an essential part of 4-3-3 or 3-5-2. Trying to think positively, this may be a good thing in that limitations can concentrate the mind (although we’ve yet to see Lassad, Miku and Efe play – wonder if they’ll feature v St Johnstone?).

All in all, a pretty disastrous International fortnight so far. I had a lot of time for Levein, but his unadventurous approach, coupled with his petty grudges against certain players, mean I’ll be rooting for Macedonia on Wed – the sooner Strachan gets the Scotland job, the better. Like most on here, my main concern is to avoid injuries for our players, but it’s always nice when your national side features in a big tournament.

For Lenny, it’ll be another case of getting players back the day before St Johnstone and having to decide quickly who’s fit enough to play, which makes me think we may well see a starting debut for a least one of the new signings.

  16. 50 shades of green on

    Celtic players playing for Scotland.

first of all i have always been a scotland fan.

but what always rips my nitting his how the scum boo our players for playing in a scotland strip.

then they go all ape when anyone decides to play for the republic.

but what do you expect from half-wits.

Highly unlikely Efe will play at St Johnstone. He has to get his work permit and is heading to Israel tomorrow to get documents sorted out

Methinks our team at St Johnstone will be very similar to that against Hibs last weekend

I don’t think Bill Struth ever managed Scotland.

Your correct Debbia Scotland team was picked by committee, a committee controlled behind the scenes by Rankers Bill Struth somethings never change

  20. up_over_goal,

It does mean a midfield rethink – and our line up will depend on who gets fit. Commons can play left side but with Forrest on the right it takes us back towards a 4-4-2, meaning the central two have a lot of ground to cover. Ledley, when fit, can play left in a narrower midfield or we could push Mulgrew forward – if he is fit!

Not easy this managerial lark, is it?

…..and best wishes to our own who face lifes toughest challenges……..

  22. Went to Hampden yesterday and remembered why I don’t like international football. Dull, boring, negative tactics for average players who think they are better than they are.

Is it just me who doesn’t get Charlie Adam? What does he do? Plays so deep that he and Caldwell were almost marking each other at times, his deadballs from set plays were attrocious and the only passes (bar one late in the game to Forrest) he made to a teammate were sideways. Believes his own hype and continually tries the ‘Hollywood’ pass, 50-60 yard diagonal usually finding the ballboy at the sides. Miller is finished, Morrison is a nothing player (i.e. he does nothing going forward and offers nothing defensively) but worst of all is a manager who is clueless and doesn’t pick his best players due his childish huffiness. This is the guy who’s first action as national manager was to beg 2 players who had walked out on their country to come back and invite 2 players who were banned ‘for life’ to return.

A good manager, with all Scotland players available for selection, would have us competitive in this group, fighting it out for a play-off spot. Levein will have us out by the end of October.

If the SFA had anything about them they would sack the joke in the technical area and give the job to Gordon Strachan, a manager with a CV that fits with the job.
