Scant compensation in Lisbon

369

Is it any compensation that POAK, who finished second to AEK last season, drew 1-1 against Benfica in Lisbon, in the Champions League playoff first leg last night?  Not really, but it is a marker of the standard required to beat the Greek champions.  POAK eliminated Basel 5-1 on aggregate two rounds ago.  Greece are likely to have two teams in the group stage.

What might have been is irrelevant, it is more important to perform to the level required in Lithuania tomorrow evening.  Celtic are far stronger than Suduva, but you and I have seen what happens when a Celtic team let standards drop away in Europe, even for a short period of a game.

  1. Good evening, friends. 1 more sleep till a European qualifier. And 3 more sleeps till me and Mrs Baldie escape the transfer window and head to Save a in sunny (better be) Spain. I won’t ask about venues for watching the 3 home games be missing but I’ll remember any suggestions.

Emphatically typical or undistinguished, but used in a context where this is inherently somewhat disappointing.

Do think it would be nice to see us with two up front but reckon that above would be pretty decent.

If did go 4-4-2 Would think Griffiths up front with Moussa. Not sure who I would drop from the midfield.

Now there’s a game Lee Congerton should be at.

    Hello… Lee….. are yae there

  9. will we have enough players to fill the bench tomorrow with all these injured players or we could just use all our medical , scouting & coaching staff for all the good they seem to be doing in their day jobs.

  10. So the Gers have got Lafferty, as a previous poster remarked a very strange move by Hearts to let their top striker go at this stage of the season, mind boggling.. But let’s not forget we have three of the top goaladors in the business in Leigh Griffiths, Dembele and Eduoard. Enough to strike the fear of God in any defence.

Expecting a top performance against the Lithuanians tomorrow night and no taking this team lightly whom I believe have already disposed of Apoel who are no mugs. Glad the so-called Champions League is behind us which we all know is now a bit of a farce anyway. European football is a must for adding variety to the season and testing the team against top class opposition.

MAHE THE MADMAN @ 4:59 PM,

‘…and I wish I had the time to properly respond.

However I would point out you say the PLC wish to make money yet this blog has consistently told us we break even over a period of time? Hmm.

Go on respond… you know you want to;) I’d certainly be very interested…

The profit thing is something of a mystery for me, as the Celtic PLC accounts have got better our wisest don’t seen to do the same level of analysis on CQN.

That said obvious Paul67 still does.

Of course when we were paying the debt down and were in more austere times, making a profit was elusive.

Not now, one thing I know, in layman’s terms… we make money.

If we are not making a nett profit these days it will be due to reinvestment in the business and quite considerable investment as well.

Which of course begs the question why are we struggling to land transfer targets when we have the cash? This as I alluded to in that post is a much bigger issue imo…

Still I’m sure we abandoned the – all the money made will be reinvested in the football team – some time ago, probably around the same time we started making surplus;) We spend a considerable amount now on infrastructure and capital investments.

Hopefully a wise counter of beans will put us right.

  12. The Orange Order has refused to re-route a march away from a church where a priest was allegedly attacked and spat on.

During an Orange parade on July 7 Canon Thomas White, 43, was allegedly attacked and spat on outside St Alphonsus’ Church on London Road, Glasgow. A 24-year-old man has since been charged.

The alleged incident led to heightened tensions and the lodge agreed to postpone a parade on July 21 that would pass by the same church.

The postponed march is now due to go ahead on Saturday, August 25, but the police and Glasgow City Council, are advising the Orange Orange to re-route it away from St Alphonsus.

The lodge are refusing to change the route and as a result a special meeting of the Public Processions Committee has been called for tomorrow morning for councillors to make a decision on whether the march goes ahead as planned or is re-routed.

The recommendation to councillors from council officials is to re-route and move the march to an earlier time.

Police Scotland have also provided comments expressing officers’ concerns about the parade route.

In their written comments for the meeting, Police Scotland said: “Should this notification be confirmed as proposed, we believe there is a significant likelihood that the presence of the parade would lead to significant potential of public disorder and significant disruption to the life of the local community.

“This would not only impact on the local residential and business community, but the general public going about their daily business would also be severely affected.

“It also the opinion that, it would carry a clear potential for disorder and violence, and would have very significant resource implications for Police Scotland.”

The procession is taking place for the ‘District 37 Annual Boyne Celebration’ and is set to gather around 100 participants.

The proposed route is as follows: Main Street, Bridgeton Cross, London Road, Glasgow Cross, Gallowgate, Moir Street, London Road, Bridgeton Cross, James Street, Mackeith Street, Main Street, before dispersing at Tullis Street.

The meeting’s document also holds comments from the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

They advised that “community tension within the Parish was extremely high and that the proposed procession would significantly add to the tension in the Parish and surrounding area.”

They added that there was “real concern” about the timing of the route and that “Parishioners are still extremely upset” about the alleged assault on their priest.

A council spokesperson said: “Glasgow City Council has been unable to reach agreement with Orange and Purple District 37 on a procession due to take place this Saturday.

“This procession had previously been due to take place on July 21, but was postponed following the incident outside St Alphonsus’ Church on July 7.

“Officers asked the organiser to change their proposed route to take the procession away from St Alphonsus’ church, due to community concerns and police advice regarding the potential for disorder, but this request was refused.

“As a result, a meeting of the Public Processions Committee has been called to rule on the proposed march. A report by officials recommends that members re-route the procession away from St Alphonsus’.”

If the Orange Order refuse to accept the council’s verdict, the issue will become a matter for the police.

The Record have contacted the Orange Order for comment.

  13. Is Edourd fit? Playing catch up on news as away with work.

If he is fit I would love to see him and Moussa run riot (albeit) carefully so as not to annoy his hammie.
