Scott Brown, Great Scottish Runner

875

You seldom hear football people speak as unguardedly as Peter Grant did to The Herald yesterday about Scott Brown.  “If somebody had offered us £4m (in 2010)?  I would have driven him down the road myself”.  The tone of Peter’s piece was supportive, though.  Our former assistant manager affirms Scott is a vastly improved performer since.  I agree.

You never really know what is going on inside a squad.  Footballers play with injuries, many find the distractions of wealth all-consuming and some are simply deployed incorrectly.  At the #19 game last week I recalled the form of Stiliyan Petrov under John Barnes, he was lost, especially when playing right back.  Bobby Petta also looked out of sorts under Barnes but within weeks of playing for Martin O’Neill both were among the most valuable assets at the club.

Neil Lennon told us last week that Scott Brown was unfit during last season’s Champions League campaign.  It’s clear that he is an incredibly more effective player when fit, but Peter Grant suggests Brown has also learned positional discipline, a subject he has previously been criticised here for.

A lot of Scott’s contribution is off the ball.  He closes space, filling the park with a presence, which is defensively important, especially on Champions League duty.  I’ve never seen Celtic’s yardage stats on players but you have to think he’ll top the list most weeks, he is the Great Scottish Runner, but all that energy needed to be harnessed correctly, which is perhaps what Scott is learning from former midfielder, Neil Lennon.

The next achievement to look out for from Scott is a marquee performance on a European stage………

Which leads us onto the Great Scottish Run.  You can still sign up for the run, and if you’ve registered already, or are still to register, you can participate in the 1254125 campaign.

The heart and soul of our community is something we cannot take for granted.  It has flourished because you, and countless thousands before you, have decided to improve the lives of those around you by getting involved in the name of Celtic.

On Sunday 6 October there is a 10k and Half Marathon.  If that is beyond you. There are family events taking place the day before.

The first thing you need to do is sign up for the Great Scottish Run, or here for one of the family events.

Once you’ve done that, you can register for the 1254125 campaign here.

Then you can create a donations page here.  Click Start Fundraising, search for Celtic Charity, setup your My Donate account).

Stop changing your moniker ,so as I can remember who you are :O)

and next time put on at tie with that T-shirt.

  3. I’m in the Broonie fan club.

He’s playing some of the best football of his career at the moment, but I also think he’s been solid through most of Lennon’s time in charge. He also had some good seasons under Strachan – his low periods certainly weren’t as low as some made out.

He’s had some fantastic European performance too.

He was poor under Mowbray but so was everyone.

I think many expected him to be a different type of player. He’s decent going forward but his real strengths are in his defensive runs, his tracking, positioning, the way he maintains the tempo and drives the team on in tricky games.

4m was a big price tag, but he’s been good value. Considering the amount of money we’ve spent on 1-3m players who have barely played 30 games, it’s quite refreshing to have a signing who became a mainstay in the team for such a prolonged period and a captain.

  4. Pot kettle with Peter Grant I have to say , grossly overrated as a player , lump of wood who should have handed the Maestro half his wages at park head for carrying him for over a decade!!! His one half decent game came in Airdrie cup final when he had ripped a stitch in his tights leading up to the game!! I would gladly have driven him somewhere if a team offered us a set of bibs and a 2 litre bottle of diluting orange!!!

The definitive article is potentially a source of controversy where thems are involved.

You’ll note it’s been omitted from the names of both teams.

  10. Neil Lennon speaking to media: “Joe (Ledley) has travelled but is a major doubt so will make a decision on it tomorrow.

James Forrest hasn’t travelled due to illness. Nir Biton has joined the group and will come into contention. (!)

Feels fantastic being here. Everything we have worked on since being eliminated by Juventus has been geared towards tomorrow.”

  11. If Ledley is such a doubt, I’d go with Brown and Mulgrew in midfield. They’ve never played at CM together for Celtic before (in a 4-4-), but their recent performances for Scotland suggest they’ll do a job.

  12. Milan must be confident seeing as they named their team today.

    MASSIMILIANO ALLEGRI:

“We didn’t play well on Saturday, actually, we

played very badly against a Torino side that

caused us a lot of problems. Tomorrow will

be a different game as they always are in the

Champions League. It’s a great atmosphere.

The start of the group stages. It’s a big

match as we’ll be up against a team that are

very physically string as well as being

technically good players, especially in the

attacking department. They’ll be a tough

team to face. I think that the players will put

in a good performance tomorrow to put the

match in Torino behind us. We’re playing at

home as well so we’ll have our fans behind

us as well just as they were in the match

against PSV. There are all the ingredients for

a great match and a great performance. I’m

not worried at all about the situation. This

period that we’re going through, we’ve

actually been a bit unlucky. We actually only

have four players with what you can call

muscular injuries. Then there are the

traumatic injuries and here you’d need a

crystal ball to see these things coming. The

number of injuries we have reads like a

wartime news bulletin but nevertheless, the

work done by the medical staff and the

    physiotherapists has been outstanding. Matri

is similar to Pazzini as a player. I think he

gives us important options up front. He

created space for the team when he came on

against Torino. That’s why we bought him.

The line-up is already done, there are only a

couple of doubts. Birsa or Robinho and

Constant or Emanuelson. Noverino, De Jong

and Muntari will play in the middle with Matri

and Balotelli up front and one of either Birsa

or Robinho behind. Kakà’s injury was getting

worse and worse as the game wore on and

the gesture that he gave yesterday regarding

his salary shows the kind of guy he is and

the respect he has for the club and the fans.

He showed real commitment on Saturday. On

Sunday we have a big match against Napoli.

We have 6 matches between now and 6

October. I can understand that Torino feel

bad but our behavior was not out of the

ordinary. I told Mexes to take the throw in

quickly as 30 second later Larrondo was

jumping for the ball. El Shaarawy pulled up in

training and I’m happy that we have 5

players who play for the national side and

we’re happy to send them to do so. It’s not

up to me to reply to Montella. In Florence,

Balotelli was given a two match ban for

protesting and the year before, Ibrahimovic

got three. We should have defended better in

Turin. We were playing with a new look

forward line and now the objective is to get

through the group stages. Not conceding is

important as when you concede more than

30-35 goals, you’ll be out of the top three

spots. The Champions League is different to

Serie A. We can’t give away as much as we

did with Torino. If you defend better, you

attack better. It won’t be easy against Celtic

and Ajax as it’s never easy in Europe. Pato is

doing well in Brazil and he’s back in the

national side but he could have not made

these accusations against people that are

working every day. I think that Celtic are a

strong team and we’ll see what happens.”

I dont believe some of you guys on here who call yourselves Celtic supporters Peter Grant may not have been our answer to Maradona but everytime he pulled on the Celtic shirt he gave 100%.I can think of quite a few Celtic players over the years who have turned on our great club players like Charlie Nick and so many others but Peter has never done that he is a true Celt. H.H.

  24. Peter Grant was a great Celt, and don’t you forget it.

His technical ability was nowhere near some of the idols who have passed through the gates but during the hardest of times his passion for Celtic and sheer grit dragged many a Celtic team up from the deck to a positive end.

His performance in the 5-0 Sporting Lisbon comeback was his zenith.

His industry allowed the maestro to play.

His fingers pointed in every direction possible inside Parkhead. ; ))

Don’t ask why me and Lady Celt are in Berlin… Interesting City, found 3 x bars playing match, Irish pub in Europa Centre, The Blarney – reckoned to be Celtic supporters bar, 20 mins on U Bahn, and another called The Celtic Village… So not losing out… Any Berlin lurkers with experience of these?
