Sectarian, racist, why not genocide too?

906

Not one of you will be surprised at reports this morning that Celtic escaped punishment for “sectarian chanting” when the club and its fans were not, and never have been, accused of sectarian behaviour.  Last month one Irish title suggested Celtic fans stood accused of racism before amending their online content to read sectarianism and eventually paying enough attention to zone in on “offensive chanting”.  If they’re going to make things up, I really would prefer they accused us of something a bit more original in Scottish football, like genocide.  Ironically it would be less offensive.

Celtic have been open to all since its inception and are supported by groups right across Scottish society in increasing numbers.  It’s the other lot, you know, them, who brought sectarian practices into the game.  From Neil McCallum, our first goal scorer, to Gary Hooper, our last, Celtic have never had this peculiar social deficiency.  Never.

The SPL decision not to act against Celtic, after a Strathclyde Police match commander complained, was assured, as Celtic could demonstrate they had previously taken action “all reasonably practicable steps” to prevent what the league called “chanting in support of the IRA”.  Both Neil Lennon and Peter Lawwell have spoken in unequivocal terms on this subject in recent weeks.

The league goes on to say, “Such behaviour is unacceptable and unwelcome at SPL matches.”  All the league have done here is pitched the ball back into Celtic’s court to prevent a reoccurrence.  I don’t fancy that job.

    Bjmac,

    would you be referring to the statement about the crime statistics?

    I dont think that was specifically about the new law, I get my opinion from lawwells initial reaction to the announcement of the proposed legislation, he was very much in support from what I rememeber.

    As for their support of the greem brigade, a pat on the head for a well behaved pet, the board are responsible for the treatement of all the supporters who enter Celtic park, we have witnessed for the last two years the heavy handed treatment by first the boards security team and now the polis, the board had and have every right to demand explanations from the polis exactly why they are treating Celtic supporers as terrorists, especially when the support have not broken the law, not only have they the right to know the answers to this question, they have the responsibility to advise the customers why they have given the polis permission to treat the supporters like terrorists

  2. Yorkston – a loathsome individual. There is no chance he would have made such a comment had a Celtic player won a pen in such circumstances.

    BUT

    He is quite right in saying it is absurd that an offence (simulation) which would earn a yellow during a match should be increased to the equivalent of 2 yellows under the review process!

    Canamalar – no not that statement. Celtic Plc submitted written evidence to the Justice Committee as part of the evidence gathering. This written statement available on the Scot Gov website is unequivocal in its objection to the legislation for a number of reasons, while also making it clear “Sectarianism” is a problem.

    As I stated, I 100% agree with you on the treatment of fans in the stadium.

    Auldheid’s Gotcha article, which some of you may have read suggests and idea around the whole of the Celtic support buying into an idea.

    The Celtic fans decide the song list, what we regard as acceptable and what we regard as could be construed (albeit by bigots) as offensive. We’ll publish the list of songs which are approved BY THE SUPPORT, not the board, not the police, not the ScotGov and not the huns.

    With the published list of songs we will sing, we provide the reasons why (they’re not racist, sectarianetc they are nationalist, etc) and also state that any arrest harrassment of a Celtic fan for singing any of these songs, will be robustly challenged BY ALL SUPPORTERS. We will defend our right to sing these songs.

    We the support need to drive this – Canamalar is 100% correct in respect of not relying on the plc board to fight this battle, however rather than moan about it, action is required.

    This would need majority support from all season tickets holders, and buy-in from supporters groups especially the GB who lead the singing at CP and drive a positive agenda. This could potentially help resolve the issues with harrassment of GB members by the SS eh strathclyde police. And for me let us all know what we will and won’t sing – there may be results which some people don’t like, but it would require acceptance of these for it to work

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Also,well said,sir!
  4. Isn’t it amazing how one line from a song gets you either humming or singing it instantly……try this on for size………..”When the snowman brings the snow”
    I understand your scepticism on how the board would react, however I think they would comply for the very reason many on here criticise them. They run our club as a business, if the significant majority of that businesses customers state unequivocally what songs they’ll sing and why, clearly articulating how none could possibly be deemed racist or sectarian, yes some could be deemed offensive to others but hey so could “who ate all the pies” to the bhoys you met on Friday night ;-) The the board would have no choice.
    By the same token, how would the GB react if all references to IRA were voted out and all Irish rebels were voted out by the majority of the support? Would they force their views on the rest of the support. I need to assure you I’m playing devils advocate here. I’ve had this conversation on the way home from Inverness with another CQNer.
    For this to work out for the best, the Celtic fans need to drive this, not the board – it is the only way it will work. We decide how we behave, what we sing, we’re not told – THERE IS A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE.
    I appreciated the Board have to play the political game too but there are limits and they are in danger of forgetting where their ultimate loyalties must lie.
    Re: Yorkston – I agree – a loathsome individual – i recall Dunfermline fans congratulating us in 88 when we won the league, and a great relationship between the 2 clubs, due to the Jock Stein link. He has managed to destroy that in his time in charge at the club.
    the point on the punishment Aluko will receive is wrong though. had he been booked for simulation in the game, the huns wouldn’t have won a penalty and may have dropped 2 points. Banning him for 2 games is supposedly to act as a deterrent against cheats. will the huns care ? they didnt when lafferty got his ban for diving after getting Mulgrew sent off at Pittodrie and gaining them 2 points , which won them the league. They have form for cheating.
    I could take the easy way out,and refer you to my recent repost of BJMAC’s gem. But that would not be fair.
    As I’ve said on here before,I haven’t sung the PIRA songs in nearly thirty years,a personal decision influenced by the fact that I was converting a die-hard Proddie(sorry).
    The fact he was 6’4″ might have had something to do with it!
    Anything else,to be honest,unless overtly about any atrocity perpetrated by the Nationists,is a song celebrating an oppressed nation’s fight for survival and liberation. And is legal in every other corner of the earth.
    As you know,I have long favoured a dusting-off of the 89s songbook to provoke a ten-point penalty and create a precedent. We could then stop it anytime we wanted.
    There are lots of teams whose supporters couldn’t…….
    agree re Yorkston but disagree re the increase in punishment.
    If players knew that the authorities were serious about clamping down on ‘simulation’ , it might make them think twice . A booking and no penalty at that point MIGHT have changed the game – we’ll never know . However , SA cheated and to all intents and purposes got away with it – i guess he’ll still be paying his own wages even while suspended .
    Alternatively , players may get ‘better’ at simulation – either way , will that not improve standards ?
    Simulation followed by yellow card = foul conceded = no penalty = no goal = 1 point not 3.
    Regards Brian Divers,old John Divers (played with Jimmy Mcgrory)lived next door to my mate,and John Divers son and Brian often visited the father
    I asked last night if any of you new John logue who went to St Pats round about that time
    * I remember Brian Divers playing for the Vale of Leven Juniors
    ———————————————————————————————————-
    There was a guy called Logue in my class at St Pats, can’t remember his first name or much more about him other than he was very studious, he came from Whitecrook and could play the piano. That would be in the in the mid sixties. Other boys from Whitecrook were the McGinty brothers – and as I recall their dad managed one of the OHR boys guild football teams.
    *that would be Anthony and Danny, I went through St Pats with Anthony, last time I saw him was at a wedding where one of his family was getting married to one of mine.
    We had a lot of Bankie bhoys at St Pats and Bankie ghirls at Notre Dame, I used tae go tae Parkheid with some of the lhads, and in the winter of ’63 when most of the games were off we went ice skating in Paisley.
    bjmac,
    the problem is, who will be the authority on the majority, who declares which side the majority are. An imposibility IMO and the main flaw in aulheids idea. We know this discussion will not happen without the boards interference, they will try to railroad any discussion and meetings exactly the way they did when we were discussing boycott. A strategy I warned against at the very first meeting, they took that and turned it into a circus for publicity roadshow and took all the impetus out of the initial reason for these meetings as they do every time the support are seen to be uniting. A united Celtic support is a bigger threat to the board than anything else. Its their biggest fear, hence their continued strategy of dividing the support at every opportunity. Songs/boycott/you name it, this is not about whats right and wrong its about their fear of facing a united support the only thing that can beat them, innit.
