Selection question, casino gambling at United

264

Ross County started their league campaign on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat at Tynecastle.  Last season that kind of result was title winning form.  Prior to that, they had three League Cup wins without conceding, although it took penalties for them to overcome Buckie Thistle in their first game in that tournament.

The big moments of last season are easy to recall.  The 3-0 win over Newco in February and the 1-0 over Dundee United a few days earlier.  Our first domestic away win in 8 months, at Pittodrie, and coming from behind at Ibrox in April.  High on the list, though, is our visit to Dingwall in December.

Playing with 10 men for the last 18 minutes (including added time), Tom Rogic dinked a cross to the far post for Tony Ralston to outleap a clutch of defenders and score a 97th minute winner.  You will not need to be reminded that Ross County have caused Celtic problems since they first emerged on the scene.

They lost Regan Charles-Cook and Blair Spittal, which will blunt them, but you know to expect a battle.

The big question for me is about selection.  Celtic failed to build on an early lead against Aberdeen, prompting Ange to hook Kyogo, Hatate and Maeda.  David Turnbull will be hopeful of a start.  It is too early to expect Moritz Jenz, Aaron Mooy or Alexandro Bernabei to force their way into the starting 11.

Delighted Dundee United got the win over AZ Alkmaar last night.  The moved the dial for Scottish clubs in European qualifiers, who until then recorded three defeats without scoring.  Tony Watt provided more evidence of the quality he has had for a decade, without being truly fulfilled.

Jack Ross is a manager I have admired since he took his Championship St Mirren team to Celtic Park on Scottish Cup duty five years ago.  His time at Sunderland was captured in the Netflix documentary, Sunderland ‘Til I die, a perfect example of why not to join a shambles of a club.  It is worth watching, if only to try to figure out how Sunderland managed to replace ex-Rangers chief executive, Martin Bain, with a less empathetic, David Brent-type character.

Last season he was rewarded for getting Hibs into the League Cup Final with the sack, a decision that looked strange to begin with, and now just looks ludicrous.

European group stage football would give United a chance to curtail the baked-in structural losses they have experienced in recent years. Their smallest loss in the last three years was £2.52m, their highest turnover in that time was £3.9m.

This is a club living way beyond its means, maybe they caught the casino bug off Monaco all those years ago.

  1. Some of you may remember that I once post that I met Bertie Auld in the street in Estoril on the morning after the Big Cup victory. Years later at a dinner in the Hibs Hall in Port Glasgow I asked what was he doing out at seven o’clock in the morning? To the delight of all present, he replied and more to the point what were you doing out at that time of the morning? Those who know me will understand the funny side of his remark.

Always a wonderful mhan and always delighted to be with Celtic Supporters. We miss you Bertie!

  3. Apologies for a wee repost…

Just a wee reminder and also a wee plea. On Saturday if you DO manage to catch the game can you please consider voting in the ole POTY competition thing. I hope I’m wrong but I’m expecting numbers to be down compared to the opening fixture. So, even if you’ve never voted before just stick the names of Celtic’s 3 best performers from Saturday’s game in an email to me at sencelpoty@gmail.com

    Thanks in advance

    ps 1 more sleep 🙂

  4. Of course, those of us who were around in those days miss them greatly. I was lucky to see the start of the great things that came about under big Jock. I was on holiday in the USA in 1964 when the team were there. One of my American cousins who went with me to a friendly in Jersey could not believe the speed of Bobby Lennox, especially with a football at his feet.

Often told people that I beat Bobby Lennox in a race. Truth is I was at the top of the Empire State building when he and wee Jiinky turned up and stopped to speak to us.

One of these days, J….one of these days. I reckon our (CQN’s) Big Jimmy would hold his own with the four legged Big Jimmy. Both of them gallous as feck.

I’m just waiting for that call, James!

The offer of a door to door lift is still there.

    WEEFRATHETIM:

A little bit of trivia re George Hazlett, he scored the last goal in a 4-3 win over Cliftonville in 1949,thus being the last player to score for the Belfast Celts in domestic fixtures. He was included in the Belfast Celtic party that toured the USA,defeating Scotland two nil,Geordie missed the game through injury.

Any Celtic supporter who purchases a season ticket is financing old firm fraud.

Any Celtic supporter who purchases a “SAME CLUB LIE” ticket is knowingly financing a crime, deceit, fraud, lie, against the status of Celtic fc.

Any Celtic supporter who knowingly, financially, asists Celtic PLC with operation `old firm retention`, has anything but, Celtic’s authenticy, ethics, heritage, history, or, principles at heart, only self preservation in the shape of a day oot is what drives you.

Any Celtic supporter who sings about the gallant Irish rebellious heroes, and then lazily, or, weakly, finances the PLC boards `old firm retention` racketeering, ought to have their ill-gotten asses unceremoniously booted out of the stadium!

But what are the chances of that happening when the stadium is populated by 53k folk who are knowingly financing a PLC board, who’s “SAME CLUB LIE” silence means they are engaged in, bigotry, and, assaults and worse on innocent Celtic supporters, thanks to the PLC`s `old firm retention` racketering, putting a dead clubs prices on tickets, which enables RFC to escape any justice for their criminality?

    53k knowingly financing crime = 53k criminals.

    What a mess!

I blame the schools for not teaching pupils how to stand up for themselves.

Enjoyed that bit of nostalgia from league cup sectional game at Ibrox 1968.Kick off at 3.30 due to Blackmen walk.Stayed in Great Eastern Hotel on Duke Street that night. In the game at Celtic Park, where I and my mates attended,Willie Wallace brought his tally to 3,having scored twice in the first game.Is it really 54 years!

  10. JUNGLE CHEERS,

    Help. Grandson doesn’t believe me

I told him that between the old jungle and Celtic end was known as “popes corner”

So called as there was a gate there were priests got in for free

In evening matches those collars really lit up under the floodlights

Can someone please confirm as he says I’m talking Granps sh***

  12. Bhoyjoebelfast on

In Alex Gordon’s book ‘Celtic the awakening’,mentions, among other things rangers fans meeting at Burnbank Cross, and Celtic supporters would meet at glencoe Street, named ‘Pope’s corner’.I know this is not in relation to your ‘question’ regarding Celtic Park, but thought I would mention it.Good luck in your quest!

  13. PINTAGUINESS at 8:13

Don’t know if this is helpful, but certainly in the 60’s priests and seminarians gained free entrance to the enclosure under the main stand. Many priests also got free entrance to the stands, though not on all days.

Going further back, you may be right. My first game was in 1961 and I stood on the very spot you describe. I never noticed any priests but I do remember Faith of Our Fathers and Hail Glorious Saint Patrick being sung!

  14. Someone needs help.

Big Jimmy from earlier thread thanks I’m feeling good. Tomorrow will be my test as the last couple of Saturday’s I have been sick after a wee drink in the house. So tomorrow I am going into Fergusslayedtheblues from this parish for the game and a few beers will be had so hopefully all good for a meet up soon.

    Hope you are feeling better.

Just our luck that Hatate is injured.

Scaniel. There was a turnstile gate next to the boys gate between the old jungle and Celtic end.

I remember seeing my parish priest from St Ann’s David St and his “colleagues”. I went with my Dad who always said to his pal “ Well meet up at the Popes corner”

Remember Hail Glorious St Patrick and was sung many years after

I still belt it out Paddy’s Day

  16. I don’t watch lots of premier league……but I thought I’d watch Palace arsenal tonight…Tierney not playing…..watching ( nothing great) the thing that strikes me the most is the difference in physicality…it really is huge compared to our game…..there is also far more pace …by that I mean most players are quick ….

  17. Priests, Ministers and Rabbis got free admission. Not sure when or why that stopped.

  18. The boy Anderson playing for Crystal Palace at center back has been superb. Would look good in a Celtic shirt

  19. Clergy were allowed in to the Stand and seminairians in to the Enclosure for free.

When St Michael’s Primary moved from Salamanca Street to the new school in Springfield Road in 1961, my teacher, the formidable Miss Brogan, demanded that we sing Hail Glorious St Patrick as we did in Church and not as they sung it over there, pointing to Celtic Park. (We could see the pylons through the tenements.)
