SFA corporate governance questions

987

Do you like our new lightweight template?  There’s a lot less green and tons more whyte.  Like it or not, the whyte template will be here for a wee while, so try to enjoy it.

Ticket arrangements for our game at Ibrox next month were always going to be tasty.  With rumour that Rangers were heading for administration, Celtic refused to forward their rivals tickets for the game on 28 December on credit, demanding payment in advance.  Rangers found the money after a failed appeal to the better nature of the Celtic board.  This proved to be a wise move as only a few weeks later Rangers were in administration leaving a trail of unpaid debts to other clubs in their wake, but an awkward situation was likely to follow with Rangers (in administration) looking to reciprocate with payment terms.

Celtic are good for the credit, but if they pay for tickets, what’s the chance Rangers will survive long enough to fulfil the fixture?

None of us are in a position to tell, but Celtic cannot sell tickets to their own supporters in the chance that Rangers will not honour them.  If Rangers are still in business, I expect a busy few days leading up to the fixture as cash and tickets are transferred.

And to think we’ve listened to all the ‘Old Firm conspiracy’ theories all these years….. didn’t turn out that way after all.

Really pleased to see STV picked up on our story of last week on the potential improper registration of players and managed to get an anonymous quote from the SFA suggesting “that if conclusive evidence can be produced, the Scottish FA could launch a wider investigation into the conduct of the club”.

“Could”!  This story has now been reported by several mainstream media outlets.  It looks like the SFA will have to be dragged into examining this by Uefa.  Embarrassingly, they are likely to conclude an inquiry into Rangers next week without reference to the 10,000lb gorilla (as No Surrender Johnston would say) in the room.

There are now serious questions of corporate governance at the association, something the chief exec was keen to avoid. If the SFA do initiate an inquiry into the multiple contract allegation, they should start by asking some of the guys who have arrived at Ibrox from continental Europe. I hear Joachim Bjorklund, a decent defender who signed his only Rangers contract in 1996, is still working in the game.

Sorry mate but I disagree. The league is not won or lost in a single game.

If a team is seeking to gain a sporting advantage by using illegal financial

mechanisms, then they have cheated. As sure as if they had bribed the ref.

Although I don’t think they would ever need to bribe the ref. just shake his hand.

fergus : My memories of the dark days are of the press falling over themselves to sneer at Celtic, the bank being unwilling to extend us credit because they were so keen to see us out of football and the only efforts to save us coming from Fergus and his group and the Celtic supporters who bought shares. I don’t recall anyone saying it would be the end of scottish football or that the MIM works team would not survive without us.

Celticbhoy : Nice. Or we could paraphrase one of the lines of one of their favourite songs and call it “There’s not a team called the Glasgow Rankers”.

Hail hail all CQN’rs. I have been fortunate enough to meet many of you over the years. I posted this on my FB earlier today and immediately got a call from Mrs.TimsinOhio in tears. That was not the intention. The intention was / is to say thanks to many of you who are here today and one ( Pablo ) who is not.

It’s rather ironic that on this milestone birthday today that I have an exact 50 mile journey to my office. As each mile passed I had many thoughts of the last 50 years and really pondered what I had done with my life. Having been born in Scotland, lived & worked Canada and now the USA and having visited many parts of the world, I couldn’t ask for a whole lot more. I am fortunate to still have both of my parents alive and they were in Ohio with me this past weekend. I have watched my 2 oldest children grow into adults that any father would be proud of. My 6 year old daughter makes me think of how lucky I am to be a ” daddy ” and last but not least, my wife has given me the support and freedom to chase my dreams sometimes at the expense of her own happiness. Upon further reflection, I have had a great career in the shoe industry and have made many wonderful friends through business and travel. I have a second family that is made up of my inlaws in Glasgow, Scotland & Glasgow Celtic fans from many corners of the world who have become more than friends. All in all, I have had a wonderful 50 years on planet earth. To everyone who has wished me Happy Birthday today, I am blessed to have had you as part of my life at one time or another. To all of my family & friends, I love you for allowing me to reach for the stars & being part of the success that I am today. I am who I am because of you.

I hope Paul67 will indulge me in posting this.

I’m not normally on CQN ‘duty’ as this late hour, but I thought I’d drop by to check out the new layout and to get a wee CQN ‘hit’ to keep me going.

In the passing, here’s a wee anecdote re: the appointment of Duff & Duffer as administrators to the once famous RFC (in admin).

A colleague of mine has a daughter who works for one of the big accountancy firms which also does insolvency stuff. She is a follower of the dark side, but told him that a few weeks ago, prior to the towel being chucked in by MBB, RFC had approached her firm to see if they’d be interested in looking after the club’s affairs, come the hour.

Seemingly they politely rebuffed the approach, based mainly on the adverse publicity and generally bad experience of the firms which had been involved in the admin of Airdrie, Dundee, Motherwell and Livingstone.

The attitude was one of ‘if that’s the snash we got for doing the smaller football clubs, what will it like if we do this mob?’

Seemingly, also, they weren’t the only big firm with a Scottish presence to be approached but to express this view, meaning MBB was left left looking for an English-based firm to do the necessary.

Just a third-hand rumour, of course, but one which makes some sense …
