Show Your Hand

1036

When I grew up everyone knew about Thalidomide, a drug given to prevent morning sickness in expectant mothers, which caused severe limb abnormalities in the child.  The drug was used for only a short period, so those suffering from the condition are all of a certain age.

The condition is both very recognisable and rare, so there is a good chance you will have noticed Gerry Cleary (above) at a Celtic game at some point.  When I was a boy I saw him at Love St and heard about the scandal later that night from my (animated) mother. There was a fresh news story only yesterday, detailing the history of one uncompensated victim.

Gerry is part of a campaign by Thalidomide sufferers to raise awareness of the condition and put pressure on the drug’s developer, Chemie Grunenthal, to compensate UK victims.  On this occasion, you are not being asked to put your hands in your pockets, you’re being asked to register your support of the Show Your Hand campaign.

Gerry explains the campaign below:

“My name is Gerry Cleary, I am a 51 year old Celtic supporter from East Kilbride who was born with a condition called Thalidomide caused by a so called wonder drug manufactured by a German pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grunenthal.

“There is currently a major awareness campaign underway to put pressure on this company to face up to their responsibilities, finally apologise and compensate all thalidomers affected by their actions over 50 years ago.

“I know being a hoops fan all my life and following the team all over Europe our club is open to all and our fans second to none, and all I ask is the Celtic family to show their support by logging on to our campaign website www.showyourhand.org which enables you to register your support.  It also details the history of the biggest pharmaceutical disaster in modern times and is both enlightening and informative.

“I look forward to your support.

Hail Hail !!!”

I know we can’t all afford to participate in the many needy causes we feature regularly here but we can all support this campaign, as can the club, I am sure.

A wee thought for those quick to condemn the McCanns.

How many people in our drink and substance orientated culture can heart on hand claim that they have never tucked the kids up in bed, then cracked open a bottle, lit a joint, jagged up or had a sniff and were soon rendered incapable of doing anything for their kids.

The McCanns and their other two kids will live for long many a day with consequences of their actions and subsequent guilt.

Indeed, let he who has not sinned cast the first stone.

    ______________________

‘ Jagged up’ made me smile.

Here was me thinking that my own life at times has probably been a bit aberrated through gambling & drink, but never anything as exotic or Bohemian as what you suggest.

That apart, I agree that the McCanns were not doing something evil.

Yes, they did something stupid & careless. Few of us have not taken silly chances in our lives at one time or another, assuming that what we were doing was unlikely to cause a disaster. They have already been heavily punished for their mistake.

I can only assume that we have some among us who live their lives to a standard much higher than I have ever attained.

I am as happy for them as I am devastated for the McCanns.

    Sorry late here..

It was Leprosy l was thinking about..Read a disturbing Article about 6 months ago..They are giving it to All ages and there is a New wave of Thalidomide..will try and find Article in Morning..

    Use of thalidomide in leprosy

Thalidomide or α-(N-phthalimido) glutarimide was first marketed in 1957 for morning sickness and nausea and soon became the ‘drug of choice to help pregnant women’.

By the early 1960s the drug was found to be associated with a congenital abnormality causing severe birth defects in children born of women who had been prescribed this drug during pregnancy. More than 10,000 cases of birth defects were reported in over 46 nations following exposure to the drug. Children were born with missing or abnormal legs, arms, feet and hands; spinal cord defects; cleft lip or palate; absent or abnormal external ears; heart, kidney, and genital abnormalities; and abnormal formation of the digestive system.

A few years later, however, thalidomide was reintroduced as the treatment for a complication of leprosy called erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL). Although the evidence was not fully established, very soon the drug was heralded as the drug of choice for the management of ENL reactions in leprosy and regulatory authorities granted exemption from licensing requirements to enable doctors to obtain limited supplies of thalidomide under strictly controlled circumstances for use in named patients. Thalidomide’s effectiveness in minimizing symptoms of ENL was mainly due to its antipyretic action. Its effectiveness in controlling neuritis, the major cause of permanent disabilities in leprosy, was limited.

Several controlled studies done in the 1970s have demonstrated that prednisolone is more effective in controlling ENL and associated neuritis. In addition, it was demonstrated that clofazimine, an anti-leprosy drug introduced on a small scale in the early 1960s had anti-inflammatory action. Studies showed that clofazimine is the drug of choice for the management of chronic, recurrent ENL reactions, as it had both anti-reaction and anti-leprosy effects.

The drug clofazimine is now a component of the multidrug therapy (MDT), introduced by WHO in 1981 as the standard treatment for leprosy and now supplied free of charge to all patients worldwide. The presence of clofazimine in the combination has significantly reduced the frequency and severity of ENL reactions.

Because of its known teratogenic effects, WHO does not recommend the use of thalidomide in leprosy. Experience has shown that it is virtually impossible to develop and implement a fool-proof surveillance mechanism to combat misuse of the drug. Today, a number of thalidomide babies continue to be born each year reflecting regulatory insufficiency and widespread use under inadequate supervision.

Dear John Thank you for your question. If the amended wording significantly changes the resolution you proposed and your original wording was accepted by the board without amendments then you can ask the company to change it back to the original wording. Ideally this should be done prior to the AGM otherwise there may be problems voting on the resolution as the correct wording was not circulated prior to the meeting.

Get onto the regulatory bodies about it. They are in breach of company law.

Moreover,if it is not challenged, they may be able to withdraw it,as the signatories to your original have not signed up to this one!

Last time round in 2001 Dam square was fairly good both before and after the game, there was some trouble outside the stadium but the locals around Dam Square were fine.

I am staying with a few friends from Cologne between Dam Square and the main station. The station is a good access route to the airport and the stadium.

This area is the heart of the tourist district so safe enough. Like all big cities Amsterdam has good and bad areas but if you stick with the crowd (Celts and Tourists) in the city you will be fine.

  18. Yesterday’s post

Was in the pub earlier and probably because no games this weekend chat got round to the best Celtic team ever. From the sixties till now was the agreed timescale. We decided on a first team and a second team. On the first team we quickly agreed on a concensus, more or less. The second team was much more difficult and no concessus was agreed. Your suggested sides would be most welcome

    Our sides are:

    442 format….

    Simpson.

    McGrain, Hay, McNeil, Gemmill

    Johnstone, Murdoch, Auld, Lennox

    Dalglish, Larson

    2nd team

    Boruc

    Craig, Elliot, Balde, Agathe

    Mgeady, Burns, Moravchick, Yogi Hughes,

    Nicholas McBride,

Further condideration of us four in the pub’s selections and input from Kayal, Lennybhoy and Greenyimfurrafenian et al the final listings are.

One change in the first team: Connelly for Hay.

The back up team was much more difficult to work out and as was mentioned earlier, left back was real difficult. Anyway here goes

    Bonnar

    Craig, Aitken, Elliot, Boyd

    McGeady, McStay, Burns, Lubo

    Wallace, Sutton

Hope this seems ok but I think it is more or less impossible to reach consensus but we got very close on our first team, particularly when we considered the various input with the various age group of supporters

  19. Some observations on yesterday and today.

I see the oldco orcs are trying to rest control of newco in the law courts today……Still no mention of who actually OWNS the bricks and mortar assets…does anyone have a definitive answer on this?

A fiver spent at the Land Register in Georges Square would solve the problem but would they give you the information?

The Lisbon Lions by definition are the best team Celtic ever fielded. Individual brilliance through the generations may shine occasionally but the Lions are the gold standard.

For me the McCann story is not for football blogs and forums……even though we all have opinions on it.

Not quite ensconced in a warm hun free mountain or valley just yet (though I’m working on it) but Egypt next week “on the clock” will do for now.
