Silk from financial sow’s ear

World Soccer Magazine published a fascinating table at the bottom of an article on the respective financial might of Chelsea and Manchester City yesterday, detailing player spend and sales for current English Premier League clubs over the last 10 seasons.

Liverpool have an average net spend of £18.1m as they chase former glories while Manchester United, who stole Liverpool’s place at the top of the English pile, had only a marginally higher net spend of £18.6m.

Fifth on the list is Aston Villa, largely on the back of an attempt to take over the world during Martin O’Neill’s reign, spending a net average of £11.1m.

Most fascinating of all is that 11 of the 20 have a net average spend of less than £4m per season.  They spend big, but apart from the odd team spending some foreign country’s mineral wealth, they also sell big.

Bottom of the table of net biggest spenders in Everton, who sold £7.8m of talent more than they bought during the period.  Newcastle United are also in a surplus, thanks in part to their recently departed director of football, Joe Kinnear, who completed his service without spending a penny.

Crystal Palace clearly have an eye for a bargain.  They successfully negotiated a return to the Premier League, and then bought Joe Ledley as his Celtic contract ran down, with an average net spend of £722k.

The Silk from a Sow’s Ear prize has to go to Arsenal.  The last decade has not been generous to Arsenal, however, their average net spend is only £1.5m per season having sold £277m worth of talent.  Their business model is not right, i.e. they have not been able to compete with those who don’t seem to care if they break even, but they, more than any other club in Europe*, are primed for the Financial Fair Play era.

*apart from Celtic, of course.

  1. John – as I said the other day just because the orange order vote against independence doesn’t mean I should. We don’t want it for different reasons. So what. That doesn’t equate with getting into bed with anyone.

You are an independence supporter and fair enough but really do you think this tactic will change anyone’s mind?

If your a Christian and believe in the bible as the Central pillar of your beliefs you will know that you cant have gay marriage.Obivously others have a different view and we could debate/argue until we leave this mortal world. Then the true answer may be shown or told to us. H.H.

  3. Neganon, good evening. I hope that life is ok for you. Actually I am not an independence supporter. I would retain the Union as I see no reason to end it. Scotland receives a lot of blessings in comparison to the English. I only post about the subject to challenge the scare mongers who think that we may have a Catholic bloodbath if Scottish people decide to go it alone. Those ideas disrespect the majority of Scots who are a decent people and who don’t care about religious bigotry.

  4. Leeds United shirt sponsor files winding-up petition against club

Leeds United’s shirt sponsor Enterprise Insurance has filed a winding-up petition against the club over an alleged unpaid debt.

The company’s managing director Andrew Flowers was part of the Sport Capital consortium that had an attempt to take over the club collapse last week.

Italian Massimo Cellino has since agreed to buy a 75% stake in the club, subject to the deal being approved.

The case will be heard in the High Court in March.

In 2012 the Gibraltar-based company lent Leeds £1.7m at 7% interest for repayment in 2015.

The Financial Times reports that the petition was filed on 29 January, the day after Sport Capital’s bid fell through.

Cagliari owner Cellino, 57, agreed a deal with current owners GFH on Friday and his lawyer Chris Farnell promptly told boss Brian McDermott that he had been relieved of his duties.

The former Reading manager was then reinstated the following day with GFH claiming it was still in control of the club.

It is believed that the Sport Capital and Together Leeds consortiums have now teamed up to buy the club, dismissing Cellino’s bid and promising to match his offer.

  5. John O’Neil for the love of God, a no vote is nothing to do with the union, it’s to do with Scotland not being ready to go it alone against the world and not even started on the infrastructure required to do so. Which would have maybe swung my vote but it will take 10 yrs to get this place ready. Have you ever witnessed MSPs debating? And they are supposed to represent us all over the world. I could not care less which flag flies they only one I really care about is the League Flag at Parkhead. HH

Has anyone ever been wound up by a ‘winding up order’- this is an honest question- they seem to fly around with no result

You think you know people. I am genuinely shocked at how narrow minded this guy really is.

He’s a Hun, I accept he’s not going to like Celtic or our manager, but his comments suggest something far more sinister.

I can’t say I was a fan of any Rangers managers, although I thought they played decent football under Eggnog, my dislike of any Huns has never come close to wishing death on them.

But it’s the list of people he follows that bothers me most. Why would anyone wish to make contract with psychopaths?

What’s the year got to do with it?

I believe in equality and an end to discrimination everywhere.

This issue is nothing to do with ‘equality’. It is the reinterpretation of a word. If parliament was to say dogs were now to be called cats, it wouldn’t make a dog a cat!

Anyway, sorry I responded…no intention of starting a new debate or create a row.

Not sure we can trust any of the local authorities with any schools, St. Joseph’s Primary in Milngavie being a prime example. That is East Dunbarton of course, both Labour and SNP. To some extent I am seeing merit in Michael Gove’s “free schools” in that the funding goes direct to the school. If that applied in East Dunbarton, a good school like St Joseph’s would not be under threat despite support across the board in Milngavie.

    Yes.

And marriage itself is an irrelevance.

Unless ,of course you are a lawyer,in which case it`s an opportunity for snout in the trough.

Marriage between those of religious conviction is relevant. As it always has been.

“The Law” is the cause of the problems.

  12. I don’t live in Scotland now but if I did, I wouldn’t really know how to vote. There are many things for and against but being brief the biggest worry would be that we joined the EEC and took up the Euro. My feeling is we should not be in the EEC, but hey, that’s my opinion. Another worry, and yea, call me paranoid, but I would fear “The ludge” lot would have a field day. At least with the status quo, they could be kept down a bit.

If a man wants to marry a man or women marry a women who really cares as long as it’s what they want I say crack on its nothing to do with anybody, the worlds a different place to when the bible was written that’s what the dates got to do with it. HH

  14. john I am fine mate. How about you. Whilst I agree a catholic bloodbath is too strong I do not trust Scotland or it’s institutions. Any country that pass the OB act isn’t fit for purpose.

  15. Justafan,

There was not much desire in the homosexual community for ‘marriage’. At least that is what many opinion polls stated prior to the campaign for this action. Indeed, some homosexuals are disgusted by the institution of marriage. The whole thing was manufactured by the PC brigade and some – but not all – homosexual activists. Many of these activists are tolerant and respectful towards people of faith but others despise faith. One can understand that hateful position given some of the remarks made by the Catholic clergy about homosexuality. You are quite right to be cynical.

It’s hard to care. Don’t see what the fuss is all about. Live and let live.

It was only the use of the word marriage that has changed. In what way is that about ‘equality’?

Anyway entirely rhetorical. Not losing any sleep on it. Just think such unnecessary, political populist fluff.

Fair play to the bufties getting their days in the sun legally recognised. No harm done to any human being.

Anyone who has problems with that will no doubt soon be advocating cattle trucks and correction camps…

SFTB – but was that an actual Winding Up Order- it seemed a lot more serious- is there a more deadly ‘Pull the Plug’ order – Winding up orders always seem to get court dates in the distant future and fizzle a wee bit

Thankfully we Fergus stopped any Winding or Pulling destroying us

I am genuinely I puzzled by the number of potential deaths organisations can have with nothing coming of it – didn’t somebody serve a WUO on thin dead team but to a pack of smarties and Mr Whippy to go away?

I think it has less to do with any apparent ‘PC brigade’ and more to do with pension rights … among other things of course.

A definition of marriage, which would also define the marriage that I am committed to. But in the Lord’s name this priest needs to change his name!!! :-)

The Elements of a Natural Marriage:

As Fr. John Hardon explains in his Pocket Catholic Dictionary, there are four elements common to natural marriage throughout history:

It is a union of opposite sexes.

It is a lifelong union, ending only with the death of one spouse.

It excludes a union with any other person so long as the marriage exists.

Its lifelong nature and exclusiveness are guaranteed by contract.

So, even at a natural level, divorce, adultery, and “homosexual marriage” are not compatible with marriage, and a lack of commitment means that no marriage has taken place.
