Some lessons for Ange

153

Everything is rubbish again.  Five points to Livingston………, why not Juranovic on penalties?  All valid points.  Momentum that has been on our side for weeks, came to a crashing end, which I have no doubt affected the result at Fir Park yesterday.  It could be next year before we get another opportunity to go top of the table.

On paper, resting Kyogo worked.  There may be a time in the future it works, but it backfired on Saturday.  My thoughts went back to Martin O’Neill, who only rested Henrik Larsson against Motherwell in March 2004, between games against Barcelona.  Celtic dropped points for the second time that season but needed Henrik to come off the bench to score.  Martin learned, win the game first, then you can rest the precious few.

If Giorgos Giakoumakis is first choice penalty taker he is a curious one as he is on the field less than half of our playing time.  We would be in the curious position of seeing his presumed deputy, Josip Juranovic, take most of our awards.  Giorgos watched Josip score without flaw on two occasions, then was required to pull rank on Saturday.  It is great the manager has faith in two to take penalties, but for now, the rest of us need a reason to believe.

In any other season, dropping points so carelessly would mean our title challenge was in mortal danger.  It is a relief than Newco have performed only marginally better.  Whoever gets their act together first* will have an enjoyable May 2022.

*that’s going to be Celtic, obviously.

  1. Bizarre the way things work out nobody would have known last season who was supposed to be taking the penalties.

Rebuild refuses at the first hurdle and by the end of October, we’d taken just 1 point in six from lowly Livingston. Dropped over a third of all available league points and are headed for last in the Europa shirley.

I’ve never seen a team so defensively set up, Livi not only defended for the entire game they didn’t break either, they had one wave, all behind the ball. Too easily thwarted Celtic, were predictable and weak all over.

Why change a winning side from midweek who knows, an injured creative replaced by a DM didn’t help but overall it was AP’s players in a plan, who let him down, against the oldest tactic in the book.

Henderson, Robertson, Shaw, nope you get Nir Bitton who only really has ever played CB in the last umpteen years. It shouldn’t have been a problem, with the side AP put out but might continue to come back.

January signings were fine to give a boost when already winning the league, that push over the line, this season it’s much more than a push we’ll need.

Tony Ralston’s grip on the RB slot gets tighter, Juranovic is certain to be the next nominated penalty taker but as a left back he’s looks very temporary.

  2. Clearly things aren’t rubbish again. Nor were we league winners after a good, though brief, run of form.

The debate needs to be more sophisticated. More strategic and less knee jerk.

250 days since Neil Lennon left. Our football operation seems weak. Our acting CEO was not considered the best candidate for the job. Unsure whether he applied or was interviewed.

We have gone all in on a single man. I hope he is fully backed and is good enough.

Superfluous mention of the Seville team is not helpful. If only………

  3. There’s a red headed Armagh man somewhere asking why Rangers couldn’t show this form last season.

Lennon’s 63% win rate up until his parting of the ways is comfortably above that of our current gaffer.

    We need to improve. Soon.

  4. I think GG was being a typical greedy striker wanting to score, of course Juranovic should have taken it,he’s the man in possession, i think AP was covering GG,by saying he was on penalties, not buying it….

  5. Didn’t realise our Saturday draw meant a Europa League points deduction. How does that work?

From the end of the last thread.

Prayers said for Stuart for a full and speedy recovery.

Regardless of what had been said ‘weeks ago’, it would have made sense to make Juranovic the nominated penalty taker after the St Johnstone game. Realistically he will be on the field a lot more than Giakoumakis so he will probably end up taking most of them anyway.

That we were relying on an injury-time penalty to score against Livingston is a different matter.

Totally played into their hands with all those crosses. Might have some use as a blunt instrument plan B if you have someone who is dominant in the air vis-a-vis his opponents (which we didn’t) or can make those Giroud-type front post runs, getting in front of the opponent (which we didn’t).

Don’t know why we went down that route. If it had been the manager’s game-plan you would have thought he would have gone with Montgomery LB. Is it the players reverting to some kind of default setting when things aren’t going quite right?

Should have been speeding up play, getting three man combos in the wide areas, pulling the defence out of shape.

Definitely things to work on. Other teams will set up the same way if they think we can’t overcome it.

  8. AP is still trying to impose his playing style and attitude onto a weak / depleted squad where too many can still remember the shambles of last season.

Sticking with certain players and pushing others to the side-lines would suggest that effort and attitude at training are key to how the team is selected.

The lack of progress and game time for the PL punts and the DD inspired signings would suggest that AP is not very happy with the summer recruitment strategy.

Everything is coming down to our efforts in January.

Hopefully we can improve the squad at every level.

Desperately needing new blood and a new MF.

  9. Is there any particular skill required for being an effective penalty taker that can’t be acquired by practice?

  10. Giakoumakis had a poor game, contributing very little over the 90 minutes. The look on his face before he took the penalty showed a real lack of confidence. Why would the skipper on the field allow him to take the penalty? Sometimes the leader just needs to step up and make an on the spot decision and ignore the broader ‘game plan’. Callum should have handed the ball to Juranovic. Crazy that we only took 1 point from that game.

  11. Garngad to Croy on

If I am honest, I don’t expect this current team to win a single trophy this season unless there is a monumental collapse at ‘The Rangers’. Ange needs another 2 transfer windows to get his own players in. Hopefully, he will be given the time and patience.

  12. I lost count of the number of times GG made runs behind their back 5 into clear spaces in the 1st half, when either Biton, Starfelt, McGregor or Carter Vickers had the ball, Kyogo did it as well when he came on, although the space behind had narrowed quite a bit, he still made decent runs but not found once! Had all the midfield players been told to keep playing across, I saw Callum instructing that after the first subs came on. por cierto

  13. If Giorgos Giakoumakis is first choice penalty taker he is a curious one as he is on the field less than half of our playing time. We would be in the curious position of seeing his presumed deputy, Josip Juranovic, take most of our awards

    ——-

Succinctly put, Paul. I’m struggling to think of any other team whose designated penalty taker isn’t a regular starter ?

Some leadership needed, even if that means hurting the feelings of your new striker.

Do you expect Sevco to do the treble with Gerrard’s cup record ?

  15. over and over

we will moan about the penalty taker

    over and over

    we will bitch and groan

jeese oh, move on to the next game

  16. 12 games into a 38 game marathon, and four points behind, is not too bad when you consider our starting position pre-season. The Champions League bonus ball awaiting the winners contributes to our stress and anxiety levels. A chance to dust down that coffin from 2012 would be a delicious prospect.

Stay in the race until January and then go big with the acquisition of proven talent. How hard can it be ?

  17. Hearts apologises after loyalist song played at stadium

Fans were visiting Tynecastle during the Foundation of Hearts open day

Hearts football club has apologised after a loyalist song was played over the speaker system at Tynecastle.

The Sash was played while fans toured the stadium at the Foundation of Hearts open day on Sunday. Footage of the incident was shared on social media.

In a statement, the Edinburgh club said the song had no connection to Hearts and that it had “no place at Tynecastle”.

The traditional Protestant folk tune is popular with the Orange Order.

Hearts said procedures have now been put in place to ensure the incident is “never repeated”.

    Switched off

Officials apologised to visitors inside the stadium at the time of the incident. An apology was also issued to the wider fanbase on Monday.

A spokesperson said: “During the day’s festivities, an incident occurred whereby a song was played over the PA system.

“The song in question has no connection to Hearts and it has no place at Tynecastle.

“As soon as the club was made aware of the issue the PA system was switched off, the incident investigated and swiftly concluded.”

My point was that ‘The Rangers’ are favorites for all 3 trophies, I don’t expect them to win all 3 ( I hope and pray they don’t). Sadly I don’t expect our current team to win any :-(

I’m struggling to think of any other team whose designated penalty taker isn’t a regular starter ?

Mark Noble is a very obvious example from a few weeks ago

  21. Look, sh*t happens over the penalty, taken by the wrong person. More pressing questuiions for me.

I’m more worried by Ange’s refusal to play Juranovic at RB and Bolingoli at LB. Anyone watching could see a) how blunt our left hand side was with a right sided LB and b) how poor our right hand side was with an albeit athletic RB with little quality in crossing and a winger who has lost the art both cross and beating a man.

If Ange’s tactics are focussed on crossing then he needs to help himself in these areas, as well as offer up a better alternative down the middle in the absence of the magnificent Tom Rogic….with more movement than Kyogo to aim for.

Saturday only worthwhile if we learn our lessons…

  22. Designated penalty taker is nonsense. You don’t need to work with the team on it in training, match sharpness doesn’t make a difference

You could argue for having a penalty taker in the bench and bringing him ion when you get one, like West Ham did with Noble, it makes even more sense at the end of the game when tired legs and brains could affect a player

The player on the pitch most likely to score it should take it, always. Designating a player to take them just because he’s likely to play more games than a better one if he’s on the pitch doesn’t make sense

  23. Paul 67,

    Lessons for Ange :

Callum McGregor can be a fantastic player, but I detect no leadership qualities.

Teams make a big deal when announcing their captain. They are expected to lead in many aspects ie media / charity initiatives, interviews, and be the voice of the players.

On the park it should be more than wearing an armband or tossing a coin. It should be about speaking up for injustice, confronting the officials, leading by example and crucially making dynamic decisions.

Callum should have the ability to read attitudes and observe team-mates body language. His manager and coaches should trust his judgement.

Otherwise just what is the point of a captain?

    HH.

  24. Jock Stein teams were encouraged to shoot on sight. Create panic and get deflections.

That was the approach in the 67 big cup final up against the masters of defence Inter Milan who had a one goal advantage. Livi coped easily enough with crosses from both flanks.

  25. An Tearmann , thanks for your best wishes in your post last night .

Terrible news about Stuart Cassells being in intensive care. I hope he pulls through.
