Spartak and the long road home

1014

Having disposed of Raith Rovers last night, Celtic have two huge away games, against top of the table Motherwell before a trip to Moscow for a Champions League match against Spartak in six days.

Tonight Spartak play just a few miles from the Ukraine border and have a journey of close to 1000 miles on Saturday.  It is little wonder they, like Celtic, are looking for ways to improve their injury record.

Celtic will travel to Moscow only a few hours after Spartak leave the city of Perm to journey home.  On Tuesday we will be the fresher team.  Could this be the game we break our duck away from home in the Champions League?  If we get it right on the park it will be.

I didn’t read the (incredible) statement by Charles Green until late last night, when I caught it via the excellent analysis by Paul McConville on his Random Thoughts blog.  Mr Green, Paul concludes, is “Either… stupid, which he is not, or he has decided to continue to appeal to his core support”.

There is a third alternative.  Last season we watched Craig Whyte, then Duff and Phelps, embark on a series of unfathomable actions.  Neither party was stupid, nor were their actions necessarily guided by anything as a coordinated appeal; they were simply being buffeted along by circumstances.  No one was in control, had the experience necessary or was party to a deliverable Grand Plan, resulting in a series of random utterances.

  1. Part of me would love us to draw Sevco. We would annahilate them.

But another part of me is happy if we never see them again. And a tie against us would be used by Green and the MSM to drum up interest in the moribund club.

I hope they get the Dons, at Pittodrie.

I thought Broonie had declared fit again- if still a problem with hip I would play him v well and see how he responds

Proudbhoy – I felt the problem v Helsingborgs and to a certain extent Helsinki was defence being exposed by mid not catching a grip. from what I saw of Efe the other night he might be a better defender playing in front …and still give us soem of the thrust we need going forward

I understand Mick Lustig is injured or he would be on my bench before Izzy

Yeah the middle was poor aswel but im not convinced with mulgrew at centre half in europe. Spl he can do it blindfolded but his pace a problem in europe.

  3. Good morning CQNers,

I wonder if the SFA compliance officer Vincent Lunny will cite McCullough for his televised attack on Adam Cummins last night? The loss of McCullough would be devastating to McCoist and would be the cue for more SFA bashing.

  4. Is anyone in the MSM going to question Sevco giving away thousands of free tickets every home game and quoting false attendances?

Chuck is no mug, invest in his share issue based on crowds of 48,000, to only find your attendances and therefore income is actually 15,000 paying customers less than that.

Sevco have still to put one penny into the club since purchasing it.

Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice, shame on me.

Foil me three times, I am a stupid hun.

  5. Morning all. Fairly mixed weather wise this morning.

I take it the sycophancy has reached new heights in the MSM today. Did Nevin make any comment about their songbook? Doubt it. He is beyond contempt.

  6. Looking forward to big Vic and Efe against Murderwell on Saturday!

They shall not pass! The wee rat Lasley, who never made a tackle last night, is in for a shock!

Have to agree with ItaliaBhoy hope they draw Aberdeen away

They would have to spend cash they don’t have

They could always get the Megabus for a £1+ 50p fee

    Keep the Faith

    Hail Hail

  8. The Mullets pre match meely mouthed pro thems comments were a disgrace.

But there is no way the wee rat ordered his players to throw that game.

  9. Parkheadcumsalford @ 08:27

    Indeed.

Perhaps we should remind ourselves of the conversation the Daring Duo had during half-time at the ‘Tic v. Motherwell Cup Final:

McLean: “Celtic supporters have been singing some sectarian songs during the first half.”

To which Nevin went on to say: “I’m going to mention it every time I hear it. Let’s embarrass these teams.”

What short memories these chaps have.

And they can’t defend themselves by saying, “Aye, but, we were in the studio and not at the game, so couldn’t hear the singing”, because the singing was clearly audible on the TV feed. Plus, after the Cup Final debacle they defended themselves by saying they were merely relaying comments passed to them from the camera team.

Having subsequently been educated in the niceties of what constitutes a sectarian song they had the knowledge and opportunity to make comment, but chose not to.

    Odious guys …

I agree with you regarding talksport. The show used to be good but like SKY has turned into gutter tabloid crap. Durham and Cundy are the worst offenders, knowing little or nothing about the Sevco scandal, they ‘inform’ 4 million English listeners every day that they really should feel sorry for ‘Rangers’.

Talksport’s one shining light is Danny Kelly. The guy is a professional broadcaster, knows his stuff and unlike nearly every radio pundit, he lets the caller have his say and can admit when he’s got it wrong. He’s at the wrong station though.

  11. Any truth in the rumour that the mullet and Black were spotted entering the Zombie FC (mini) team bus after the game last night with broad smiles on their faces?

The bus then dropped the party off at a local ludge for the post-match celebration.

Passers-by, and local residents, reported that the celebration carried on well into the early hours of this morning – several well-known ‘songs’ were given a good airing.

    HH!!

  12. lorbobo- I agree that the mullet would not have thrown the game but I seriously question the commitment and desire of his team to win that game last night.

We all remember the 2-1 win at Fir Park last season, a pivotal game, during that 90mins the ‘well players were flying in with outrageous challenges, Lasley, Jennings Higden could all have seen red until the unlucky Tim Clancy was red carded for a “fly kick” at Hooper by the utterly hopeless and soon to be demoted Charlie Richmond.

That was the difference- Motherwell wanted to win that game as if their lives depended on it, last night they couldn’t give 2 hoots, no doubt saving themselves for Saturday.

  13. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

‘Throwing’ the game would have involved putting in some effort.

If Mccall had trained a race horse instead of a football team he’d be up in front of the stewards for not trying.

Last night there was a banner bearing all his hallmarks and sporting the line: RANGERS, SIMPLY THE EBTS

I know next to nothing about Sevco or Motherwell . I haven’t seen a minute of either team since they last played Celtic . . I don’t read the Scottish press etc . I have no real knowledge re either team. I’d struggle to name a Motherwell player . I’d struggle to name more than 2 Sevco players.-

Given that -why the bet ——?

    17/10 was a gift —–

    Why —— ?

The statistics relating to games between Motherwell and Rangers since The Mullet got the Managerial gig at Motherwell..

I had no worries . I had no doubt . I waited until this morning to check the result ..

  20. Gordon_j, Sevco and the MSM would not play it as a first ever game, it would be used to strengthen the ties between Oldco and Newco, the Oldfirm(apologies) tag would be used everywhere to reinforce this. Let them play Aberdeen away.

  21. Information request —————-

Sicilian / Italian bookies call Sevco this ——–

    CSD Rangers .

  23. Morning CQNer’s

I have just dropped in to say…Thanks to Neil for summoning John Park to the bench during the infamous Ross County SCSF defeat a couple of years ago.

If anyone recalls correctly they’ll remember Neil, practically asking JP – “What did you see in those players to recommend them to Celtic ?”

You only have to look at – Efe to see how much JP has upped his game. Too early to judge Efe ? We’ll see. IMO, Efe is a cross between Patrick Viera and David Rocastle.

P.S. Mort – I have tried to get the evidence from GW’s column on Sunday but, sadly the link thing disny work. Sorry Pal.

Have to go oot the noo.

    Back later

    God Bless the Cellic

    Hail hail

  24. I’d start with Rogne as he’s our best defender in the air, and with Higdon playing for them they’ll go the aerial route and try to bypass the midfield. If Lustig is fit (don’t think he is though) i’d play him at right back as they will try to isolate Matthews with Higdon and try to hit diagonal balls to him.

Give Broonie the day off and keep him fresh for Moscow.

    —————–Forster——————

    ——-

Seriously, you would move one of the most consistent player out of position?

I mean I know Efe had a good game in midfield against Raith but that was RAITH!

Vic has been a solid in there for most of the season (or when he’s been available) so to move him to defence to make room for a defender in midfield seems daft to me.

I’d play both in the middle before I would think of dropping Vic to CB. And I think playing both is possibly what Lenny is think of IMHO. These two giants in the middle would be very tough for most teams to handle.
