Spartak and the long road home

1014

Having disposed of Raith Rovers last night, Celtic have two huge away games, against top of the table Motherwell before a trip to Moscow for a Champions League match against Spartak in six days.

Tonight Spartak play just a few miles from the Ukraine border and have a journey of close to 1000 miles on Saturday.  It is little wonder they, like Celtic, are looking for ways to improve their injury record.

Celtic will travel to Moscow only a few hours after Spartak leave the city of Perm to journey home.  On Tuesday we will be the fresher team.  Could this be the game we break our duck away from home in the Champions League?  If we get it right on the park it will be.

I didn’t read the (incredible) statement by Charles Green until late last night, when I caught it via the excellent analysis by Paul McConville on his Random Thoughts blog.  Mr Green, Paul concludes, is “Either… stupid, which he is not, or he has decided to continue to appeal to his core support”.

There is a third alternative.  Last season we watched Craig Whyte, then Duff and Phelps, embark on a series of unfathomable actions.  Neither party was stupid, nor were their actions necessarily guided by anything as a coordinated appeal; they were simply being buffeted along by circumstances.  No one was in control, had the experience necessary or was party to a deliverable Grand Plan, resulting in a series of random utterances.

Like many a once-famous Glasgow performing act, I believe The Celtic Football and Athletic Company Limited made a brief appearance at a hostelry formerly located in West Regent Street (indeed, some on here may even have been familiar with the place) by the name of The Ol’ Burns Howf.

    You can guess the outcome.

The money of which you enquire may have been swallowed up that night in drinks, cigars and fish suppers …

    Tubby Hayes .

I love Tubby Hayes . I love Mexican Green . The only LP he made that was all originals . A mess of a man . Saw him a few times —– lucky he could stay awake / walk upright ..

Absurd snobbishness and inverted racism meant that next to nobody bought ” British jazz ” In the mid / late 70s I was buying bulk quantities of LPs [ for absolute peanuts ] by the likes of Tubby Hayes and saving them for a rainy day . That rainy day came in the mid 80s when the likes of Gilles Peterson started spinning Tubby Hayes etc at places like Dingwall’s .[ Rare Groove / Dance Jazz ! ] Suddenly, some people were willing to pay big bucks for stuff they could have bought for peanuts. T here is money to made from trend and fashion.

Folly Folly- never a cheap date, an ole night out in the ole Howff.

But the prospect of noise induced tinnitus and exotic venereal ailments drew us like moths to the flame.

Sorry, SOT, but I did not ask anybody how much they staked on Rangers.

That is none of my business.

What I actually posted is as follows…………………….

How many of those who are now saying that they KNEW Motherwell would lie down had a SERIOUS bet on Rangers ?

I am prepared to bet that the answer is NONE.

Rangers won easily because they wanted it & NEEDED it more than ‘Well.

    No conspiracy.

    No match fixing.

Nothing to do with the officials.

They won because they were the better of two poor teams.

    Rant over.

My estimate of the number who benefitted substantially from their foresight was WRONG.

    I suggested NIL.

I am delighted that in fact it was ONE,

    ….your good self.

I commend your judgement & fortitude on winning a free holiday break from Motherwell’s capitulation.

Well Done & continued Good Luck.

Had a similar conversation with one of my mates ( SEVCO follower) tried various methods of explaining the situation re pacific shelf garbage.

My final and favourite analogy which seemed to get the message through was:-

When I was a kid Marathon was a succesful sweety and Cremola foam was also extremely popular.

Marathon changed its name in the early 90’s to Snickers, but importantly was still the same product with the same ingredients owned by the same people…it has continued to be succesful.

Cremola Foam ceased as a brand in the late 90’s ( probably due to the fact most of its ingredients were no longer legal for consumption) and although a poor imitation of the brand has been re-introduced ( cremola fizz) it is a completely different product with different ingredients and, unsurprisingly, is not the success the product it imitates once was.

this seemed to clarify things. although my only issue with the comparison was, I loved cremola foam as a kid!!!

    Hope this helps

  12. You can put your house on us getting Sevco, they are desperate for the cash (especially if they have been giving away tickets).

    BTW

How many tickets have been getting given away?

    Anyone know?

  13. If we get Sevco, which let’s face it, is an inevitability, I sincerely hope that if it’s at Celtic Park we give them the bare minimum allocation of tickets. Treat them as we would any other SFL side.

See that fat embarrassment McCoist is already talking about an “Old Firm” quarter final.

Has no one told him yet?

    Very sad about Tubby Hayes.

I am afraid that jazz does suffer from snobbery and ignorance more than just about any other musical form. Still, good to see a few jazz fans on here.

  18. Kilbowie Kelt ——-

    Thank you ! .

Sad thing [ for Scottish football } — is that it doesn’t feel like luck .

An extra rationale for the wager was having an indelible memory of seeing Mullet the player , some of his Rangers team mates and a repellent wee mob of brutish pals giving it drunken , bigoted and moronic sectarian laldy in the bar of a Shawlands hotel on a Sunday afternoon.. Such a leopard could never change his spots.

  19. For what its worth, i don’t see them pairing us with SevCo in the draw. Judging by the half hour i saw last night, we would take 4 or 5 off them. Even at Ibrox. They won’t want that humiliation

An easy draw like St Johnstone or a money spinner like Aberdeen. Both at Ibrox of course
