SPFL bet on China

787

Interesting development reported this morning by the BBC that the SPFL have sold rights to a Chinese broadcaster for around £500k per year.  With rights for major European leagues commanding premium fees, it seems intuitive that there’s space for lower-cost content, but Scottish football must be starting from a position of practically zero market knowledge in China.  Unless Zheng Zhi is a whole lot more popular than I realised.

The other aspect about China to bear in mind is the size and habits of its gambling market.  If you are a gambler, you don’t watch football for the thrill of following your favourite team, you watch for the opportunity to beat the bookie, and in this respect, Scottish football is as valuable as any league.

Sport’s relationship with gambling has been a source of concern, especially in the Scottish lower leagues, but when you look up your fixture list and see the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership, there’s no point getting precious about the influence Chinese gamblers.

I see the Bumblebee’s back!  This NB know how to push our buttons with the retro look.

I know around 100 of you have/can/will run a 10k or half marathon, and a few dozen have told me you’re signing up to do the Great Scottish Run for your Foundation.  You know what it’s about, Health, Education, Learning, Poverty – or in short, it’s about what Celtic means to you and me.

Time to get moving on it.  See the Foundation page here for details.  It’s in October, so there’s a good chance the rain will stop by then.  Let me know when you’ve signed up, celticquicknews@gmail.com

You don’t need to break records, you don’t even need to run the whole course, just get the trainers on and get out there, you’ll be glad you did.

SMSM reporting of all things Sevco is beyond parody now.

In fact it has now entered the nauseating zone.

I hope the Hibs boys tear them apart on Saturday.

The pantomine at Ibrokes continues we are told today they are after Alan at Hibernian now not only would that strengthen them it would weaken Hibs.Where is the money coming from for these incoming players we are constantly being told on CQN by some posters that The Rangers are bankrupt and yet they keep on going and they keep on spending. H.H.

  4. I hope and expect Ronny to start with his strongest 11 tomorrow night. The tie’s as good as over in my opinion but I’d much rather that we went out and killed them off rather than offering them any hope.

We’re 2 up and going away from home. I don’t care that it’s against ‘poor’ opposition, the aim is to ensure we don’t concede.

Twitter was ‘reporting’ last night that Charlie Adam was set to return to Ibrox also. In my opinion it’s all bluff and hyperbole.

Sounds like they are trying to unsettle a rival player before a big game.

I have long raved about the ability of Scott Allan. I saw him early last season and was impressed with his defence splitting passes. The guy has a touch of class about him. He has vision and is very good on the ball.

He sort of ran out of steam last season I felt. I don;t think he has ever played a full season before and maybe wasn;t up to it physically. Mentally he had a court case to face around an insurance claim. That is now settled he appears to be fit mentally and physically for the new season. He has banged a few goals in this pre-season and I will probably have a wee punt on him to score first on Saturday.

Apparently he is a Rangers fan but Sevco tried to sign him when Hibs did and he KB’d them.

I think the boy has a big future and if he starts the season well we should snap him up. McGeouch is very well thought of at Hibs and I believe £500k plus Mcgeouch would have Hibs tempted to deal.

We missed out on Gauld by not having the vision to see what he could achieve and although Allan doesn;t appear to have quite the same natural ability he is certainly worth a punt for half a million.

Seems the two from Wigan are the first to cost a fee. £700k with £280k upfront.

Not a huge amount. They can worry about the rest of it later. Or not.

It’s also worth remembering they dropped 13 players and have signed 6 (I think), if they have costed things on the same basic level, then there’s some money about.

  12. I was talking to a Hibee in Majorca a couple of weeks ago . And he said Allen is a terrific footballer but is finished after 60 minutes as he is diabetic .

He also thinks Hibs will win the league easily enough this season .

They are a semi-professional club with a patchy record in their own league. Just how poor does a team have to be before you’ll remove the inverted commas?!?

I don’t remember Rangers spending any actual money Joe Fillipi. One of the players may have their fee set by tribunal?

Rangers will spend another season in the lower leagues. It’s up to Hibs et Al to ensure they stay down.

people are saying they will run out of money are saying that because it is an arithmetic fact. They are spending more than they are bringing in. Even a share issue, if they get past King allegedly having no money and the spectre of Ashley yanking the legal chain, is likely to result in A temporary influx of cash. A 3 year plan to win the top league? Aberdeen are in a stronger position with more potential.

I’m looking forward to another season free from the hype.

The aim is to be in the next round. I’ve watched us play too often in a gung ho fashion, only to be picked off on the counter attack in Europe, to advocate anything other than a secure performance that achieves the objective.

It’s funny I was talking to a Hibee at the weekend and he told me that Allan was a diabetic. Must have been on their forum recently cause he has never mentioned it before.

Scott Allan made is professional debut 4 years ago and has made a total of 90 appearances. 42 of those appearances were at Hibs last year.

    This boy is a player.

It wasn’t a criticism, mate. Suffice to say I’d be p’d off if we lost this tie. But as I said in my post an hour or so to KEVJ,I’m banned from watching Celtic in Autumn after two defeats to worse teams.

We’ve all witnessed shockers in our time. So Thursday,I promise not to compare a victory to Lisbon but till then I’ll harbour a wee nagging doubt caused by bitter experience.

You’re aware that I still have reservations regarding Ronny particularly in Europe. It’s partly because of those reservations that I’ll just be happy to be in the next round come tomorrow night.

  29. BMCUW,

Really find it hard to believe Wigan would give Sevco credit.

Unless they are just desperate to unload a couple of millstones.

  30. Turkeybhoy

Just read his Wiki and Scott seems to have the identikit of a typical Ronny player. He has not progressed as he probably thought had a few rough years and was possibly a little lost. There is real natural talent though and better guidance, team mates, training, etc and I can see this lad flourishing.
