Spinning for trouble by Sky

1044

I try to avoid those who really should be avoided but I caught the report of Peter Lawwell’s Sky TV interview on their website yesterday.  The “No summer sales” headline was misleading in itself as our chief exec actually said “there is no real necessity to sell players now”.

We are a solvent and well-run football club, there is no real, or imagined, necessity to sell, but there is an enormous leap between this status and “no summer sales”.  All clubs, not just Celtic, sell when an offer exceeds their valuation for a player and they believe the money could be more productively redeployed elsewhere.  There is no necessity for Manchester City to sell players, not until the oil runs out in the Middle East, anyway, but they may still sell.

Best part of the article was from Charlie Nicholas, “I’m a bitter idiot. Listen, I’ll prove it…..”

I’ve translated that quote from the vernacular.

Loved newco Rangers accounts.  £3.5m in the bank on 31 December, £1.5m loan since, so they have £5m to operate until the season ticket money comes in, which will just be enough, but cash burn is running at over £1m per month; close to £15m a year.

£30m-£50m is not enough.

  7. I suppose it depends whether or not you believe in serendipity. It’s been a good week, hard work , lots of travel, late nights and I caught the second half of our title winning show at Firhill on Sky by running flat out and catching a train from Manchester to London Piccadilly ( note to self: must get fitter). Great result , great display in that second half so all feels good.

To the point of my post. Today has been manic from early but my IPad diary advised that Sebastian Barry ( one of my favourite authors) has a new novel out and it was time to go in search of it.

Just before 7pm tonight I did some food shopping and called into my local Daunts Books on Marylebone High Street to enquire about the publication date.

On asking my question the charming assistant responded by advising that she could do better than giving me the information I requested because the author was actually standing behind me having just arrived to give a talk about his new book – The Temporary Gentleman.

Had a nice chat with him, had a wee conversation about the Celtic and departed a happy man.

Life today dictates that I am reduced to being a lurker on CQN and noticed some days ago a debate about the Stein era and how good the Lisbon Lions were. Incidentally people of my generation , who attended that game, I believe became reluctant adopters of that name. I cannot recall anyone ever referring to that team as the LL in the immediate years after that stunning victory. Gordon- if you are on tonight would you confirm this statement.

Anyway I did read the excellent and lengthy contributions about the 1970 European Cup Semi Final between Celtic and Leeds United. In the modern world it would be like Celtic drawing a consistently better team than Manchester City. Leeds were unchallengeable. They were the outstanding team in English football at that point.

For the first leg a friend who was a relation of Sir Robert Kelly asked me if I would like to accompany him to Elland Road- who would source the tickets. I had intended travelling with my Dad and brothers on the Sarsfield Celtic Supporters Club bus but I was a young lad and impressed with the offer. My friend had a Jensen Interceptor sports car which was several lifetimes ( but not s enjoyable ) as travelling with my Gorbals folk.

He advised that we had to travel to Harrogate to the team hotel to collect the tickets and that is what we did. Difficult to replicate the sense of excitement and tension around the game. As ever the English press suggested that Celtic were only perceived as a really good team because they had little opposition in Scotland. For the modern generation of Celtic supporters then the excitement was possibly as electric as the whole Seville experience because we reckoned if we could overcome Leeds then the final would be a carnival in Milan.

On arriving at the hotel we met Sean Fallon , known to my Mum and Dad and we were taken through to have tea with Desmond White and collected our tickets. Throughout the tea drinking the players including g particularly Jimmy Johnstone lacked around in their Celtic hooped strips and didn’t appear to have a care in the world- unlike me. My hope was that if Celtic lost a couple of goals we could recover at Hampden in front of a huge partisan crowd. I distinctly remember asking Desmond White how he thought the game might unfold and without a moments hesitation he responded- 2-0 to Celtic. Now that prediction amongst English folk might have had you sent along to the nearest surgery for further investigations.

We took our places in the main stand amongst the rest of the Celtic party.

I remember the Leeds fans being really overawed by the numbers and passion of the Celtic support. We were ahead inside 30 seconds- cue delirium and we were 2-0 up just after the break although that second goal was ruled offside. At the end of that game I recall many Leeds fans in that stand shaking hands . They were hugely impressed by Celtic and their amazing support. It was only half time in the tie but everyone felt that we were on our road to winning a second European Cup.

We all have highs and lows in following Celtic. I attended the 7-1 League Cup Final , the Dunfermline game changing Cup Final, Lisbon, the amazing 4-2 League clincher in 1979, Seville and so on as well as gut wren hers such as the Raith Rovers defeat at I rox but nothing will ever replicate losing that European Cup Final in Milan. I can still touch back and recall the overwhelming sense of disappointment. Seville was pride. Milan was a lost opportunity.

Have just listened to the Peter Lawwell interview on Sky and feel hugely proud to be a Celtic supporter. Not through Peter’s leadership as CEO of Celtic but rather that the essence of this fine club is alive and well and waiting to write it’s next chapter in a truly amazing narrative.

Sebastian Barry is a nice man.
