SPL threat effectively terminates football in Scotland

1889

Yesterday evening STV revealed the real outcome of last week’s meeting between Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir as a proverbial gun was put to the head of Scottish Football League clubs.

In short, SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, no doubt with the support of some clubs but without the prior knowledge or support of Celtic, has threatened to kick 20 SFL clubs out of the senior game unless they acquiesce to his demand to parachute Sevco into the First Division.

The proposal was presented by SFL chief executive, David Longmuir, and appears to carry his endorsement.

Five scenarios are portrayed:

‘Rangers’ remaining in the SPL is dismissed as SPL clubs have confirmed they will vote no.

‘Rangers’ going to the third division is objected to on two grounds, financial (which is laboured a bit) and – wait for it – “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

Ponder that one for a moment, “The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs”.

‘Rangers’ to the First Division is presented as being “financially possible to recover from this scenario”.

‘Rangers’ to SPL2 is dismissed as apparently this would create “a bigger divide” than moving ‘Rangers’ to the First Division but not changing the name of the league.  It is also noted that a legal challenge could bring paralysis.

Finally, they discuss ‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended, which apparently would lead to “complete financial meltdown”.

Then come the inducements to co-opt ‘Rangers’ into the First Division…. cash, your cash.  Lots and lots of your cash, an “immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!”  The exclamation mark is theirs!!

We could spend all day dissecting this disgraceful document but I’d like to focus on one immediate element:

‘Rangers’ terminated or suspended – complete financial meltdown.

So how do the SFA, SFL and the SPL rogues who participated in this shambles propose to ensure the SFA Independent Judicial Panel does not suspend ‘Rangers’ for subverting our game for over a decade for fielding illegally registered players for that period?

In short, it cannot.  The independent judicial process will itself need to be subverted.  As I suggested a few days ago, the judges will be told they are no longer wanted, we are back with the hand-selected SFA committee men.

The three most senior executives running our game have told you that one errant club is so powerful it cannot be subject to the rules and must not face the punishments which are due.

I’m not going to dispute the validity of this view (just now), but surely we deserve some honesty? If the Scottish Football Association and Scottish Premier League has accepted the ‘game’ is over, let’s hear from them. Where is the leadership from the SFA president on the collapse of the game under his watch? What are the chief executives saying to their paying customers?

Our sport cannot be subverted below radar.

You have been cheated and the rules will be changed to ensure there are no consequences.  This is no longer a sport, it is a financial accommodation where a few executives are threatening to expel 20 clubs, most of whom have over a century history in the senior game, to allow Sevco to start two divisions higher than they otherwise would.

Celtic can have nothing to do with this.

The game here is dead. The leagues are set to collapse, most likely, no matter what happens now.

    SPL can’t relegate Rangers.

Perfect! The ball is well and truly burst then, and yesterday’s wee scare tactic has just gone ecto-plasmic on them.

Where does that leave the Grand Master Plan?

Agree we need to get rid of the people who are running football in Scotland.

SPL confirm they can’t “relegate” Rangers as per rules. July 4 ‘no’ vote will see club expelled, newco left to apply SFL. As we already knew

The thing is we didn’t actually know. To me this demonstrates that the plan all along (in the mind of Neil Doncaster) was that the SPL share would be transferred and then Rangers could be ‘punished’ by relegation/demotion to DIV1 and justice would be done. However the clubs scuppered that by looking for real justice, hence this pitiful scrabbling about trying to find a new way to shoe-horn them in to DIV 1.

    I’m sick of it.

  7. ASonofDan @ 11.46 – Just on a point of order, Celtic and rangers objected to the Setanta deal and wished to stay with Sky, who had put a large competitive offer on the table. They were outvoted by the other clubs. Setanta subsequently collapsed and Sky returned with a much reduced offer, as is their natural right. The perceived value of Scottish football has been irrevocably reduced by the Setanta mess.

The SPL mismanagement of this issue cost all SPL clubs millions.

  9. Here is a radical thought. We as fans want our opinions heard, we are the game afterall. All SPL/SFL teams supporters groups should form one body and demand a seat on the SFA, SPL & SFL boards.

  12. Rieperman – when you mentioned left footers more likely to mss penalties, I presume you weren’t alluding to their religion :-)

I would think that they’re more likely to score as it’s easier for them to hit it to the keeper’s left. If the goalie is right handed/footed, then he has to dive to his left, jumping off his weaker left leg and stretching out his left arm – a slight disadvantage.

Left handed players do better in a number of sports than the percentages suggest. Part of this is due to tht awkwardness of an opponent facing a southpaw – cricket, tennis, boxing etc and part due to their left brain/right brain make up helping them in some way (which I’ve forgotten).

You say: “… we have a chance here to setup the league based on the principles of fairness and equality.”

Aye, but there’s the rub: how do we, the fans, the paying public, force these very necessary changes?

I see several problems: some to do with battling against vested interest ,some to do with back scratching and the remnants of a dying class of freemasons who have run our game since time immemorial; but others to do with a lack of vision and lack of courage.

On a more practical level, I also think it’s blindingly obvious that fans are barking up the wrong tree asking guys like Regan and Doncaster to show some leadership or vision and to act ‘in the wider interest of the Scottish game’.

These guys are mere hired hands whose ‘customers’ are those who pay them: viz. the chairmen of the member clubs. They don’t see the fans as their customer base; as their primary source of income. They may even have bonus payments linked to the turnover and profits they make for their boards.

Several club chairmen have recently surprised everyone by their pronouncements on the re-admittance of Rangers to the SPL or SFL1, but by-and-large these views were extracted from the clubs, not volunteered as being obviously in the best interest of the game.

My first love was the game of football.

That will not change and my love will not die.

Football in Scotland will survive – in a different form perhaps but it will survive.

The love of football is to strong to be destroyed by the machinations of unprincipled power brokers.

We may all in future be watching a form of FC Wimbledon or FC United but watch we will.

  20. In the 80’s I fought REAL hard against the Thatcher regime…..and it cost me a lot, a helluva lot. Anyway, I finally regained my identity and went back to being a member of my tribe, The Celtic Community. When the rest of the world has become incomprehesible you follow your tribe and take comfort from it.

Now, this staggering scandal has come along and,as someone quoted earlier from Kipling, “The hun is at the gate”. That collection of ingrates is threatening to destroy everything as they spiral into darkness, and they epitomise all that was spawned and celebrated during the 80’s and is rampaging wildly today.

Their vile efforts to destroy, destroy, destroy have to be resisted. This is one single chance to expel their mindset from our game. Otherwise,it’s over ; and they will continue to strut and crow, like never before, with their sense of entitlement reinforced and the o.o. strengthened and even more bellicose in their attitude and voice.

I don’t want to see that. Neither do you.

  22. Folly Folly – we fans are more powerful than we think, even more so the lower league fans as their clubs 100% rely on their ticket money with no TV money to speak of.

Celtic can take the lead here and empower these guys to force their chairmen to do the right thing by them, their clubs and Scottish Football.

it needs to be a “league” in the dictionary definition of the term. It needs to be equal and fair.

Previously that would be pie in the sky idealism, there is a chance here to turn an ideal into reality.

I can love Celtic and never watch another Scottish football match again, and if this disgrace ends up the “brave new world” of the game in this country I will turn my back on it once and for all, every bit of it.

It will leave a hole in my life. But I have plenty of options for filling it. I won’t play any part in a deal that reeks like this one does.

This decision will turn tens of thousands of fans off FOREVER … we will go, and for the rest of our lives we will not be back. Our kids and grandkids will grow up hearing why, and reading about it in one of the many, many books certain to be published on how Scottish football died.

But they will never go to watch it.

Over the last week or so, I have received a handful of emails and facebook messages regarding the proposed Rangers Newco and their various options for getting back into Scottish football. Some of you have asked that I make a statement on our position.

We don’t have a statement to make as there has been nothing proposed to make a statement on. Most of you know my views on the SPL and their effect on the good of the game, but I’m not going to get into that just now because I don’t feel like sitting in front of the disciplinary panel again over this.

Inevitably it will become a problem for the SFL to work out and at that point, we will receive all of the facts and proposals on which to base a decision on and we will do what is right for Scottish Football

and for Ayr United. Self-interest is a short term benefit and the SPL is hard proof of that. We are more interested in the long term benefits for the game as a whole because inevitably what is good for the

game will eventually be good for the club.

For the record, Ayr United try to play within the rules. We try and abide by the financial fair play guidelines and we give every penny available to the Manager for his playing squad. Unfortunately, it’s very tough to do with the expectations of supporters, players and managers but it is what all clubs have to do to keep the club alive and the creditors paid. We try and do it, and we expect other clubs to do it as well.

That will be a large part of our decision making process if and when we are asked to sort out this SPL mess, but we must hear all of the facts first before we jump to conclusions.

I hope that clears up my current thinking on this and thank you for passing on your views on the subject.
