Split Fifa grounds to withdraw 2022 award

661

Sep Blatter hoped that Fifa would today ratify moving the 2022 World Cup, which will take place in Qatar, to the (i.e. Europe’s) winter months, however, that looks unlikely to happen.  Fifa are split on the matter while Uefa president, Michel Platini, is keener to focus today’s meeting on the working conditions of migrant workers based in Qatar.

Right now Fifa have no grounds to withdraw the award of the World Cup hosting rights from Qatar, the award was made in full knowledge of the country’s climate.  The treatment of migrant workers could change this.  Fifa can insist that World Cup preparations do not expose workers to undue risk or inappropriate conditions.  If Qatar cannot deliver within acceptable working practices the basis for legal grounds to withdraw the award has been established.

I wouldn’t book tickets for Qatar just yet.

The most enduring frustration from Tuesday night is for Charlie Mulgrew.  Playing in his fourth choice position, which would never really be a choice Charlie would make, he did exactly what was asked of him against Iniesta and Xavi.  His chance on 73 minutes could just as easily have bounced inside the post, which would have bestowed appropriate appreciation for the effort one of our own has put into his career.

Bring on the Ajax.

I’m curious as to who gave the £2.5m personal guarantee to lend Rangers International money, noted in their accounts this week. This is as big a financial commitment anyone has made to the Newco in some time.

I will not be booking tickets for Quatar period. I have no interest in a World Cup for whom the deaths of dozens of young Nepalese construction workers appears to be treated as some kind of collateral damage. It is not about the temperatures in 2022 it is about the conditions under which, what are in effect, bonded workers are working in now. It is yet again about how brutal regimes, attempt to gain respectability by sponsoring sport, including one just across the London Road, and one on show at Celtic Park just the other night.

  12. Hi Paul67,

The plan to hold the WC in Qatar in the Summer always seemed bizarre, maybe the powers that be at FIFA always thought they could get agreement to move it to January.

The fact that this looks unlikely got me contemplating…

The Clubs in general and the big boys in UEFA seem to have more and more power and influence, you just need to look at how much money they receive for Global TV rights and many top players withdraw from International Friendlies.

It occurred to me by 2022, they could have significantly more clout.

Also the money and resources invested in top players means they are precious commodities.

I remember several Scots, especially Souness suffering in Mexico’s heat and altitude, but you’ve got to hand it to the Argentinians who looked acclimatized.

Would Clubs allow players the necessary time to get properly acclimitized, then the necessary recovery time?

Would the Clubs, the agents, the insurance companies be happy to see these valuable assets, play Football in inappropriate conditions? Possibly not.

Good points on Mulgrew did not look out of place in that Company and I for one thought the ball went in, very close.

He could have took the easy option and hit the target but would never have beaten that Barca Keeper.

I know we only beat Ross County and St.Johnstone 2-1 and drew 2-2 with Inverness, and dare I say it (lost to Morton),but this Saturday is the day when we’ll score a load of goals.

A good performance the other night, unlucky result, a wee bit of magic and better lucky could have made it a repeat of last year.

Though it should be a concern that Spanish paper AS described the team ‘they possess one of the most horrendous styles of football in Europe.’ Can’t really argue with that based on the other night on its own.

    On Qatar…

Has anyone thought what would happen to the workers everybody is concerned about if the world cup was taken from Qatar? Do they think Qatar would look after 500,000-1,000,000 indirectly employed on projects for the world cup?

My view from Qatar on That Guardian artical:

In no way trying to argue that good Guardian piece but the World Cup projects will be run by multi-national companies who will have to ensure the health and safety and welfare of all involved in the job, big projects in Qatar do this just now. Theres good compounds for labour and men are fed at least three times a day and there’s usually on average two hour lunch breaks and cold drinking water stations all over sites and air conditioned rest places.

The law for working during the summer this year was from mid June 2013 up to the end of August 2013, the working hours were no more than 5 hours, work not to go beyond 11 am and not begin before 3 pm.

As I say, this is on the bigger high profile projects, on those the laws and health and safety is mega strict as it should be in such a dangerous place. However the whole ‘build a country for a world cup’ thing means theres loads of smaller jobs needed around Doha and they are done by smaller local companies. Country the size of Strathclyde, one city Doha the size of Hamilton, theres a lot of building to be done. Small local companies who seem to do what they want, theres no health and safety inspections from the government, or PPE provided by the looks of it, and the labour accommodation looks bad from what you can see from the outside while driving by.

Its true a lot of the Nepalese and Indian men shown on that video get ripped off by dodgy agents promising them a good earner in Qatar then it turns out they are stuck, and struggling to pay back what they have borrowed to go get the job. Thats wrong and something should be done about it. Licensed agents in other countries enforced by Qatar seems the only way to do it but like everything else in Qatar getting things set up and done takes forever.

Everybody who goes to Qatar to work is subject to their company approving when they leave to go home/holiday, even Raul playing for Al Sadd needs to get an exit permit to go home. A very dodgy if things go wrong like it has for the men in the Guardian piece but for the majority its just part of the rules to work there.

As I say this is no way trying to defend Qatar, the Guardian piece is great and can only help improve things, also giving Qatar such a high profile construction job like the World cup can only bring good practices to the place and improve standards. If the world cup wasn’t scheduled for Qatar would the world’s media be looking and caring about workers rights in wee Qatar?

Im guessing theres about 500,000-1,000,000 people in Qatar doing work linked to construction/world cup, if it had went to a developed country would as many jobs have been created to build stadiums? A lot of those people are earning much more money than they could at home and are able to send back to give their families a better life.

Where else would have been the ‘boom’ place for so many to work if Qatar had not got the world cup or it was taken away? If the World Cup was taken away from Qatar does anybody think the hundreds of thousands of men in the Guardian piece will be taken care of and helped to get back home?

How Qatar got the World Cup is dodgy as hell by the looks of it and Qatar built a small stadium fully air conditioned on pitch and off pitch that was demonstrated to FIFA at bid time to show it could be played in the summer.

I cant see how moving it can be done now or how it would help anyone no matter how shambolic its ended up in going to Qatar.

I have been losing interst in the World Cup for a while now. The Champions League is now the premier event. Also it has become so bloated that it has diluted the quality of games. Half of the games I wouldn’t draw my curtains to watch.

There are many countries steeped in football history and tradition that will never be able to host the World Cup as it has become far too big – Scotland, Holland, Denmark, Croatia, etc. But a place like Qatar can have it? Total joke. And as for why Qatar got selected – don’t even get me started!

What worries me now is that they are going to kill the European Championships in exactly the same way. At 16 teams the event is the right size and has been a much better spectacle than the World Cup recently. With expansion to 24 teams it will go backwards in my opinion.

  23. I’m Neil Lennon (tamrabam)

The same loading of the dice in favour of the bigger clubs is why the Champions League is predictable non event at the group stages.

Cup competitions at any level should be of the simple knock out variety.

But money talks, as it apparently did in the awarding Quatar the World Cup, and there is not much we can do about it.

  27. FIFA – – – some wise sage once said that a camel was a cow as decided on by a committee. Kinda says it all with that mob yet they rule world football. Joke! How on earth could they, bearing in mind the conditions in Quatar at that time of year, give the OK to hold a tournament there. I do feel sorry for the Quatari’s, it’s not their fault. They would provide great stadia , air conditioned etc etc etc but the decision pinpoints the downright arrogance of FIFA.

Someone should tell them to foxtrot Oscar. We don’t need them. Football does not need them or their Mssr Platini’s crowd either for that matter. Surplus to requirements. A bit like Bernie Bloody Ecclestone in Formula One.

  28. Auldheid – Charlie is the player every squad needs – the guy who will give you an 8/10 performance week in week out and some weeks when required he’ll give you 10/10.

remember Fergie saying that about D Irwin and it stuck with me. Charlie to me is dependable, technically able and occasionally very very good. And if he wasn’t a footballer he’d be a season book holder at CP. Gotta love that.

  29. BTw – this article on Quatar, it’s just another distraction planted by Pistol Pete to stop us talking about why we didn’t buy a 50 goal a season striker of CL quality to be in exactly the same place as Mulgrew on Tuesday to tell him to get tae and head that ball in to the net.

    You’re all so gullible.

  30. Just heard on Talksport that the biggest, by far, contributor to the TV rights for the World Cup is USA.

They will not pay top rate if shifted to the winter as it would clash with NFL and College football.

    Go with the money.

  31. While on my soapbox and before my Duracell run out my take on our midfield is this. Lenny was a holding midfielder. He stopped play. He prevented moves starting and broke them up if they did. Therefore he wants similar types of players, images of himself in other words. He is blinkered and should, and I hate to use this expression but he should think outside the box. Put another way. If my all time hero, Lubomir Moravcik Esq were to become manager, what type of midfield would he deploy?? Creative players obviously, ‘cos that was what he was, and with some style may I say. My bias is showing but I’m sure you get my drift.

we desperately need a creative midfield man, desperately. Commons is the nearest thing to that in our ranks but we simply must IMO, get a Messi, Crosas , Modric type of player. Look at Arsenal since Messut Ozil sighned for them. Night and day.
