Split Fifa grounds to withdraw 2022 award

661

Sep Blatter hoped that Fifa would today ratify moving the 2022 World Cup, which will take place in Qatar, to the (i.e. Europe’s) winter months, however, that looks unlikely to happen.  Fifa are split on the matter while Uefa president, Michel Platini, is keener to focus today’s meeting on the working conditions of migrant workers based in Qatar.

Right now Fifa have no grounds to withdraw the award of the World Cup hosting rights from Qatar, the award was made in full knowledge of the country’s climate.  The treatment of migrant workers could change this.  Fifa can insist that World Cup preparations do not expose workers to undue risk or inappropriate conditions.  If Qatar cannot deliver within acceptable working practices the basis for legal grounds to withdraw the award has been established.

I wouldn’t book tickets for Qatar just yet.

The most enduring frustration from Tuesday night is for Charlie Mulgrew.  Playing in his fourth choice position, which would never really be a choice Charlie would make, he did exactly what was asked of him against Iniesta and Xavi.  His chance on 73 minutes could just as easily have bounced inside the post, which would have bestowed appropriate appreciation for the effort one of our own has put into his career.

Bring on the Ajax.

I’m curious as to who gave the £2.5m personal guarantee to lend Rangers International money, noted in their accounts this week. This is as big a financial commitment anyone has made to the Newco in some time.

You can join the bhoys for a meal(no sausages) present match..

We only drink loads of cider lager and Hendricks before starting on the red wine at dinner..

    ……………

The drinking part is not a problem as I have to admit I consume, on occasions, copious amounts.

The problem would then be getting to the game and finding a seat; not to mention getting home afterwards!!

  3. fan-a-tic,

I agree. The team reflects Neil’s style of play. He was a ball winner and shove the ball sideways to someone who could do something creative with it. A great foil for him was Izzet(at Leicester) who moved the ball forward. Sadly, we do not have that element in the team. Perhaps as Neil gets more experience as a manager, he will alter his coaching philosophy.

One of the negatives with the sideways, cautious approach is that the wingers(or wing backs) get a sideways pass when they are hemmed in by two or three defenders. They then are forced to play against unfavourable odds to get forward, or push the ball backwards. The result is a slow buildup. Lack of movement by forwards contributes to this.

I know Stan’s game was not a competitive one, but you could clearly see the difference that Henrik made to his Celtic—his movement is still superb! How difficult is it to move into space? I suppose if you do it a few times and don’t receive the pass, you revert to saving your energy.

Ever wonder how each of us would cope if we managed Celtic for a week or two? It would certainly be a dream, but maybe, also, a reality check!

Got to go, but not to the jiggin’!

Also given that their trailists didn’t start getting paid until 1 Sept …wonder how much they’re losing per week at the moment

  8. As I suggested earlier, it is a change of mentality we need in our coaching. I have suggested we send the likes of John Kennedy to Barcelona for a couple of years to learn their approach. We need to encourage our young lhads to play football which must needs mean they learn to pass and move, to pass forward. There are lhads like Paul George who have the ability; I’m sure there are others.

I know the SPFL militates against playing proper football but, if we want to improve against the best, we need to let our players learn more than how to defend.

RANGERS have hit back angrily at former

chairman Malcolm Murray after he denied

responsibility for the director pay packages

that were this week revealed in the club’s

    annual accounts.

Murray spoke out after Rangers chief

executive Craig Mather claimed that the

former chairman decided the salaries of

    Charles Green and Brian Stockbridge.

Former chief executive Green received a

total of £933,000 in less than 12 months

at Ibrox, mostly made up of salary,

bonus and severance pay, and finance

    director Stockbridge pocketed £400,000,

about half of which was a bonus.

Murray, who was appointed chairman of

    Rangers soon after Green’s consortium

    of private and institutional investors

bought the club’s assets and business and

    formed a new company, described

    Mather’s comments as “misleading and

    vexatious”.

But the Rangers board countered on

Thursday night by accusing Murray of

    making “grossly misleading statements”.

The club, who this week dismissed a

request to hold a vote on Murray’s

potential re-entry to the board at the

club’s annual general meeting, issued a

list of their version of events, which

read: “Mr Murray was appointed by

Charles Green on June 14 2012 to Sevco

    Scotland (now Rangers Football Club

Ltd). There were no institutions in the

club then. The club IPO was on

December 19 2012 so it is grossly

inaccurate to say Mr Murray was put

there by said institutions to oversee

    corporate governance.

“Mr Murray proposed Craig Mather to

    the board.

    “Mr Murray agreed Brian Stockbridge’s

    salary and bonus.

“Mr Murray agreed Mr Green’s salary

    and bonus.

    “Mr Murray negotiated Mr Green’s

compromise agreement and signed it off.

“Mr Murray was removed from the

    Pinsent Masons investigation (into

Green’s alleged links with former owner

Craig Whyte) by the board after leaking

    information to a third party.”

The statement continued: “The board of

Rangers Football Club are appalled and

saddened at the current demeanour of

Mr Malcolm Murray and the damage

that he is causing to the club and regard

his behaviour as totally unbefitting a

once respected practitioner in the City of

    London’s financial community.”

Murray, who left the board in July, six

weeks after stepping down as chairman,

had responded to the claims of Mather,

    and similar comments from Stockbridge,

in a statement issued to Press

    Association Sport on Wednesday night.

The statement read: “I joined the board

    on the recommendation of the

institutions to instil a high level of

    corporate governance at Rangers.

‘’This proved to be very difficult as I,

Phil Cartmell and Walter Smith were

outvoted by the Green placements at

    every turn.

“The contracts I was shown last summer

    were significantly higher than current

levels and I struggled to get them down.

    “Cenkos (then club nominated adviser

and broker) and I tried again to lower

them at IPO but found severe resistance.

“Pre IPO, I was the only non-executive

and as a private company there was no

    remuneration committee.

“Craig Mather was proposed by Charles

Green and rejected by me and two other

    board members. His remuneration was

    never certified by me.

“When Phil Cartmell left, Craig Mather

was interim CEO and remuneration was

not confirmed. These are symptoms of

why the shareholders and fans demand

    change.

“Craig Mather’s assertion that I decided

the executive salaries is misleading and

    vexatious.

“In fact, Phil Cartmell was chairman of

    the remuneration committee which

never met once despite his attempts –

and he is on record at being unhappy

    with levels of remuneration.

“Craig, I agree that there is a call for

fairness in your statement. Do you,

    therefore, agree that we, the

shareholders and fans unite to ask these

people to pay these bonuses back for the

    good of the club?’’

Murray is aware of the club’s latest

    statement.
