Spoiled Child FC have their Trump Jan 6 moment

376

The SFA issued a statement yesterday afternoon in response to Newco’s comments implying inappropriate action by the VAR adversely affected them during their recent defeat to Celtic.  It addressed three matters:

The Newco penalty claim was a “Subjective handball… that the VAR did not deem it a sufficiently clear and obvious error”.  The VAR did not claim the incident was not a penalty, just that it did not meet the “obvious error” threshold.

Notwithstanding the subjective nature of the above decision, it goes on to say that at the meeting, “There was an overall consensus that the incident could not have led to a penalty kick being awarded in any event”.  So we all agree, no penalty!

The statement concludes by attempting to chastise Newco for their behaviour and its potential consequences, “recent incidents in European football that have compromised the safety of match officials”  They failed to mention incidents in Scottish football last year which led to two prosecutions following a Newco complaint against a referee from a similar ethnic background to Saturday’s VAR.

Newco is like a spoiled child.  Not getting its own way results in a tantrum, where no reaction is off the table.  They are not adults, they will not learn, if anything, they have set a new level of behaviour they are compelled to repeat.  The SFA statement will have no restraining effect.

As always, it is not the nutters around the boardroom table who do the real damage.  They simply inspire the (genuinely) tiny percentage of violent and dangerous individuals, who now feel a reaction is justified.  Newco are Team Trump, this is their January 6 play and we all know it.

This is shameful behaviour from a shameful football club.

  1. So does this mean if they’re Team Trump, does this mean that they actually won the last Glasgow derby?

I disagree with this sentence, it’s not a tiny percentage unfortunately it’s a large chuck of them!

Net spend and spend even I know, are two different windows.

I try to avoid the pure economics and leave it to the experts, but I think we’ve already agreed we signed too many players, it’s not rocket salad.

BTW the fabled often quoted £72M is nearer three figures if you include this year’s CL takings. Much more on the summer window to be written, you could easily argue it wasn’t, as bad as it’s been made out to be.

When Celtic had a ‘legitimate Hand Ball’ that cost us a defeat at Hamdump the club ‘wrote to the SFA’, end of story. Sevco, friendly Scotland made their latest claim last a week, had special private meetings it’s still going strong driven by SKY BBC STV and any other news portal you can find. By and large the infrequent complaints made by Celtic do not get covered by SMSM, except when it suits. It suits SMSM fine, to run backwards and forwards to Hamdump and IBrokes. In sports news? – Celtic’s highly merited derby win should have been the media locus, going into the break but it wasn’t, because Sevco didn’t get an offside penalty.

    Who cares?

Celtic are beaten at every turn in terms of media coverage to the extent it influences the way the club behaves sometimes to our detriment, or not in a good way.

This is the bit that puzzles me.

IF the on field ref gave a free kick then presumably he did not see any contact with the hand, as even though using a hand is not necessarily a foul, it still counts as contact with regards who restarts play (GK or corner) when the ball leaves the field after contact with the arm/hand.

So if a replay shows contact and the ref has not seen any and this contact may fall within the remit of VAR (pen, goal, red card) then HOW on any level is that not clear and obvious exactly? I know the wording is so obtuse as to allow a horse and cart through but jeezo!

If this were not offside and was at the other end, I would want a pen for that as it was ball to hand. That said, as handball is such a subjective rule the most anyone can hope for is consistency of approach from any given ref and given the Goldson two handed save from last season (same VAR ref) then at least he is in some ways consistent(ly baffling).

Thems screaming for a second yellow for AJ for an “elbow” is another case in point – throughout the game there were many “elbows” – all deemed not intentional so again, at least there was a level of consistency which went against both teams on occasions.

I hope behind the scenes Celtic are taking advantage of the new policies created by the SFA for Sevco and we are reviewing the audio for the Turnbull pen, the Goldson OTT challenge on Bernardo etc. if only as part of their duty of care for their employees.

    Agree 100%

Sadly it causes a divide between the club and some supporters also as many supporters believe that Celtic could do more to change the narratives albeit in a much more, dare I say it, dignified manner.

  6. Let’s not interrupt the enemy …. assuming we win the league and give them a doing at Ibrox 0-3 would be my prediction… then the Hun will go into a vicious downward spiral.

They’ll push the UEFA FFP rules to the limit and it wouldn’t be a shock to find them barred from Europe in the next few years.

On the recent VAR drama they should be sanctioned for the behaviour towards Willie Collum , who in the grand scheme of things is one of the better refs (tin hat ready) , who struggles only when a game gets out of hand.

A fine of about £250K would be needed to discourage future bad behaviour from the Huns, they won’t pay it but it will get deducted from their league prize money. Any further occurrences this season and then just keep all their prize money.

  7. It will be interesting to see an analysis of referee performances against them this season, pre and after the new year derby.

P67 spoke yesterday of the refs circling the wagons against Sevco. I think the opposite will happen. Refs will think it’s not worth the hassle giving big calls against them.

And from a hun perspective, if this tantrum gives them a material advantage for the second half of the season in terms big decisions going their way, they’ll see it as a good move.

  8. Celtics best strategy is to ignore the media , and only take up the challenge if we get defamed. The negative energy created by digging up the media every 5 minutes is not worth it and makes us look like a bunch of tossers.

If some of our supporters get fed up because we aren’t jumping up and down in media are in my opinion unlikely to be happy as no doubt the club will have gone about any such action in a cackhanded manner.

As I’ve said, penalty or not is neither here nor there for the huns. The whole point of this pantomime is to deflect and intimidate.

In the void of football related news created by the winter break, the last thing the Sevco board wanted was for their klanbase to be reading about another Celtic victory for 2-3 weeks. Best to create something out of nothing and vilify a referee who happens to a RC lest the klanbase turn their anger on them and the manager.

They always knew they could rely on the SMSM to do their bit, so it’s mission accomplished for the Sevco board.

As I said yesterday and alluded to by Paul, it will only get worse if Celtic keep winning. They have set a new benchmark for what they are prepared to do in order to deflect. Eventually however, reality will be too obvious even for their demented fans to ignore and the whole thing will come crashing down.

  10. I think collum’s position is untenable. He has been targeted and undermined by sevco and I don’t think he will get their games again.

  11. From our national broadcaster

Previously under Rodgers, he would take his players to Dubai for the winter hiatus. Not this time. While Rangers head to the relative warmth of La Manga, it’s the cold reality of their Lennoxtown training centre for the reigning champions.

Which suggests the Northern Irishman wants to be at the heart of any transfer business being done.

….. This has been the lead article for a day , we’ve won the league umpteen times , ahead , just comfortably beat the Huns …. and wait for it the transfer window is critical for us…. really , better to laugh at the blatant bias and focus on gubbing them next game.

I don’t think that reflects on the professionalism of Celtic’s PR department rather a pre-disposition amongst brown-brogue wearing editors and media proprietors of a certain standing. Rangers PR is preaching to a converted and unreconstructed audience, but no matter, as long as we “crush our enemies, see them driven before us, and to hear the lamentation of their women” to paraphrase a certain Northerner…

  14. LUCKY CODY @ 7:30 AM,

The team was significantly weaker post summer transfer window whilst growing the balance sheet. The load on our remaining key players is huge and at times they have all had their periods where they played on when needing a rest. The Manager , team and fans rallied together and pulled us through the last 4 games in spite of the Board and a poor recruitment team (thats before you add nepotism into the mix).

Yes, it was interesting BR’s take on it…

“I love working with this group because they are such an honest group of players. There is not an idiot amongst them.

They know that they weren’t quite at the level, especially against Hearts, but I looked at that and it was a bit more fatigue on the back end of a Champions League game and because a lot of players were having to play continuously.

But you have to perform, and that is what it takes to be a Celtic player. You need that mentality to win, and to win in a way that will make the supporters happy.

So, they have done that. Against Livingston, suffocated the game really well. Dundee, our best performance against a back five. Rangers, a big game, and a big game mentality.

Then coming to Paisley, everyone would probably have looked at St Mirren as a tricky game, but actually the quality of our football and the hunger in the team was there. So, it’s heading more towards where I want it to be. The longer we work together, the longer they’re adjusting and adapting and feeling comfort in how we want them to work.” – Brendan Rodgers.

Well, the nett spend and different windows scenarios can add to the smoke n’mirrors.

If we leave it to the experts the PLC are going to end up with a huge wad of cash in the Bank and the Executives very rich.

Our end of financial year is the end of June, and the transfer window opens at the beginning of June.

The seasons transfer windows, the first opens in early June and second transfer window closes in early February.

The yearly transfer windows, the first opens at the beginning of January and end the second transfer window closes at the beginning of September.

    So let’s make it simple.

In the 2023 January window we made circa 10 mn profit from player trading.

In the 2023 Summer window we made circa 10 mn profit from player trading.

In the 2024 January window we can spend an awful lot more on player recruitment than we make from player sales and we need to do that.

We have a League to win and a new format UCL campaign this year.

Believe me, we will make a lot more money that way.

As for the perennial problems of the Rangerses, the SFA and the SMSM

Yip that said, a perpetually compliant media can work both ways, as the original club found out. They lied, and covered for Rainjurz and ultimately it backfired in the most spectacular way, when the true extent of cover up unfolded.

Had the media been open never mind investigative, they might never have died.

To be fair even with a fully compliant media for Celtic (PLC) I do not think Celtic (fans) would be fooled by such obvious piffle. A lot of us seem to be built to question, not blindly follow (follow) and we have enough smart cookies within our own that give us many perspectives on all things Celtic.

If it were the other way round .

Many Celtic fans would be screaming that we were being cheated by corrupt Masonic officials .

Many Celtic fans would be creaming for our board to do exactly what The Darnel board have done.

There have been two highly controversial decisions which occurred during the last two derbies.

The disallowing of the Darnel goal at Ayebrokes ,and Johnston hand ball at Paradise.

They were result changing decisions .

That went in Celtics favour .

In particular the Johnston decision reeks of a refereeing mistake ,that was later covered up by VAR officials ,discovering the offside later ,and not pointing it out at the time .

They retrospectively looked for something to cover up the referee’s mistake .

    Luckily they found it .

Just like The Dougie ,Dougie cover up at Tannadice ,which blighted the honesty of officials some years ago .

A cover up was wrong then .It is wrong now .

Potential Sectarian attacks on officials is a separate issue.

However sickening the historic examples are.

The Watergate type of cover up’s needs to end .

History shows us that in the longer term .

Celtic will suffer more from cover ups than The Darnel.
