Stokes mentor Hughes and O’Dea at Dees

488

Anthony Stokes joining up with John Hughes for a third time, on this occasion in Inverness, would be a great move for all concerned. Hughes knows how to get the best out of the player, who is wasting away in the stands at Celtic. There will be a financial consideration, as unlike a team in the English Championship, Inverness will not be able to cover all of Stokes’ wages, but Celtic are better having a contribution to his wages than nothing.

Anthony is still only 27, he could have several productive years ahead, but he needs to get back to putting the ball in the net somewhere (last goal was against St Mirren in December 2014).

Also delighted to see Darren O’Dea back in Scottish football at Dundee. As we discussed last week, Dundee are full of goals at both ends of the field at the moment. An experienced international like Darren (28) will help.

  1. If the benchmark to join Celtic is Carlton Cole,or Tyler Blackett, then Darren O’Dea would exceed the criteria by a distance plus put a bit of Celtic back in Celtic.

For me it would have been an opportunity,to give him a try,and assess fitness etc.

Likewise Stokes,he is not quick,HOWEVER he is no slower than Ciftci,I often wonder if his limited inclusion drives his indifference to discipline etc. Not making excuses but he is an option we are not using.

I would rather see Yogi joining us as a coach than Stokes going to ICFC.

    In the current team,Tierney apart,we have no one who REALLY gives a toss,its a job,this is a glaring error,and it shows…………………….EVERY WEEK.

  2. funnily enough the Old Port Celtic club was getting talked about during our new year get togethers.

can we put Ciftci in the stands and see if it works for him :¬))

Did RD not also hint that if Stokes did in training he’d be getting on the pitch?

I have zero problem with that. At the end of the day it’s his job and like all of us if he doesn’t perform Mon-Fri he won’t get the rewards.

Either Ciftci, Armstrong et al are dynamite in training or Stokes really isn’t trying at all.

  5. I will be sad to see Anton go if he does. He is one of our best with the ball at his feet, but if it means him getting playing time than it would be best for him. Ronny should be taking him under his wing and getting the best out of him, still lots to contribute Imo

The stock phrase every manager uses when asked about an out of favour player.

The general wisdom is there is no way back for Stokes at Celtic. That being the case, at 27 he should move on.

RANGERS FIRST have today started polling members over a potential £500k interest free loan to the Ibrox club.

The fan ownership scheme have become one of the largest shareholders in RIFC plc in recent months and continue to collect a significant sum of money each month.

Now the group have offered half a million pounds to the Light Blues board on the same terms as the loans provided by chairman Dave King and the Three Bears consortium.

If approved, the loan could be converted to shares at a future date to further strengthen Rangers First’s hand and give supporters a greater say in the running of their club.

RF members have until January 10 to cast their vote and the resolution requires 75% approval to be passed.

In a letter to members today, RF say: “Rangers First is the 8th largest shareholder in the Club and we remain committed to increasing your shareholding in the Club.

“We are always looking at ways in which to build our holding while also contributing to the rebuilding of our Club and we have such an opportunity to present for members’ approval today.

“We believe you, as our members, want to help to drive the push for promotion and get our team and Club back to where we belong.

“As you know loans have been provided to the Club and the Rangers First Board also want to give our members the option to contribute. We are therefore asking you to decide whether or not to join with Dave King, the Three Bears and others and offer the Club a loan of half a million pounds.

“If the necessary approvals are obtained, then the intention is that the loan will be converted to shares which will increase the shares held by Rangers supporters in the club.

“The loan would be on the same terms as Dave King and the 3 Bears and would be made available in the middle of January with drawdowns through to the end of the Season.

“The loan will be interest free, unsecured and will run until a share or rights issue can take place with a longstop date for repayment of two years. The Club would also have the option of being able to repay it at any time in that period.

“Your Board has had much discussion and debate regarding this and believes that this may be one of the best ways for Rangers First to help the Club continue to rebuild, develop and expand.

“This is a key issue on which RF asks its members to decide, we are therefore asking members to approve your CIC making a loan of half a million pounds to Rangers International Football Club PLC.”

Pretty sure the cast of Police Academy 5 would be good enough too :)

As for Europe we’d probably be better off with the three stooges rather than the Dundee 3.

If we are looking to loan players this window then GMS & Armstrong should be at the top of the list. Two young guys with no confidence who may just benefit from a trip to Easter Road for the remainder of the season. As for Ciiftci lets just give him to Sevco for free.

  10. up_over_goal on 7th January 2016 1:50 pm

I think Common’ behaviour was worse but he’s either too good to leave out, or he at least trains effectively.

Anyway, I agree Stokes is probably a better player than Ciftci but if whatever differences there are can’t be resolved he should move on.

  11. Would the transfer of Stokes to ICT be a loan or permanent?

If Anto goes to Caley he will come back to haunt us, of that I am certain. Like someone else mentioned, I would prefer he went to Hibs to help their efforts against the scum team than have him playing against us. He would run rings around our defence and enjoy doing it as a ‘get it up you’ to Ronny.

    Hail Hail

  12. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

Nobody in Scotland can afford AS not even Celtic. Loan deals will ensure he does not play against us.

  13. If Stokes goes to ICT and starts banging in goals what would it say about our coaching regime/ player selection?

In case you missed it,the ” current team” does not include Scott Brown ( injured ) and Izzy ( displaced )

Agree, when included they work hard as does Griffiths.

    You make a great point.

I’m sad to say that Ryan Christie will not help make us a decent CL team again either.

Our whole recruitment of players after Virgil /Denayer has been crap.

  16. When the options are Ciftci and Cole,Stokes is Neymaresque…..he should have been left alone as a penalty box striker, instead of trying to make him a wide left midfielder IMO

  17. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

Stokes was a player who frustrated the life out of many of us. Slow (ish), but above all else selfish. Tony scored a few goals, obviously had some ability and happy times in the hoops.

I’d watch him get the ball his first thought was always, how can I score; his second thought was how can I score; leaving us to witness his third thought ” sorry mate I should’ve passed to you…..

How I wish we could get another forward capable of getting into those positions just now.

  18. How Cifti can get a game ahead of Stokes to me sums up our managerial problems.

My understanding is that Stokesy is a nightmare to manage with regards to punctuality etc.

But a good man manager would surely get more out of this talented player ,than the cumbersome ,slow,Cifti.

The thought did cross my mind that John James was a plant of some sort, but more one that would muddy the waters and say things that discredit his own, and the broader, argument?

    Who knows? Not me :)

  21. I think it is a worrying indictment of where we stand that Darren O’Dea (who wasn’t a particularly good defender for us) and Anthony Stokes (who has many limitations as a striker) – are both arguably better than just about every defender and striker currently on our books.

  22. At the end of last year Celtic agreed a loan for Stokes to go to Raith Rovers.

    Understandably Tony knocked RR’s back.

This shows how desperate Ronnie and Lawell are to get him out of the club.

    By whom?

  24. Stokes should not be going anywhere on loan. If there’s interest down south then sell. If there’s not then he should be in the squad ahead of both Cole and Ciftci. Ideally all three won’t be Celtic players come February 2nd, doubt it though.

  25. How could anyone look at Carlton Cole and think he was fit for purpose.

Then give him a contract to 2017.

I’ll put my neck on the line and state that Cole won’t score ten goals for Celtic.

At a cost of around £1.5 in wages and signing on fees.( I’m putting an educated guess in here)

    What an absolute joke.

    Seen it all now

Celtic supporters making a martyr out of Stokes and using him as a stick to beat the beleaguered manager with.

Maybe if Stokes had behaved like a feckin professional he could have been in a position to serve the club better – as well as us who ultimately pay his wages while he’s sitting on his behind.

The manager has consistently been slapped in the face by Stokes and his pals Mulgrew and Commons.

Get the three of them out sooner rather than later.
