Superior fitness and mental fortitude will deliver for Celtic

1174

Having pummelled Newco repeatedly this season there is a notion that we’re going to do it again on Sunday. I’d be tempted to hold that result. St Mirren, an inferior team, demonstrated for 57 minutes how far blanket defending and a bit of organisation can take you. If Celtic record an impressive result at the weekend, they will have to be at the peak of their powers.

We can expect Newco will have watched replays of the opening 20 minutes of our Hogmanay tie dozens of times recently. They will do their best to capture what worked for them during that period, and attempt to replicate it on Sunday.

We started slowly that day, which is not entirely out of character, but one or two also looked spooked by the occasion. Newco started on the front foot, again, something they repeatedly do, but just as they have done throughout the season, they soon ran out of steam.

There is not a great deal they will be able to do about Moussa Dembele, short of cutting off supply to him. As a consequence, they will stick tight to Scott Sinclair, who will have work to do to even get involved in the game, never mind hurt the opposition. This is no bad thing, as while Scott is our most productive player, the team will be full of players hungry and capable of hurting the Newco defence.

This is a game which could be in the balance with 15 minutes remaining, but which Celtic could score three times in the closing period. They have the superior fitness and mental fortitude.

Our greatest danger will be from officialdom. Conceding a penalty, a red card, or both, opens the only door possible for Newco to take anything from the game. Keep cool heads as we’ll do just fine.

  5. Hi Bhoys

Just talking about favourite hun games and memories we beat them 2-0 at ibrox when Tam and Murdo scored. Me and my mate were in the thelast 2 seats in the top right hand corner of the Broomloan Road stand. We were one up from an early Mc Adam header and into the the last 5 minutes,we got a free kick abot 25 yards out. Murdo who in my opinion hidnae kicked his arse the whole game was lining it up when my mate says to me if he scores here he’s man o the match. Murdo steps up and BANG 2-0.

Laugh, hug and leave pure magic.

Delaney’s , Colin was meant to be a top bloke and was a qualified teacher, helping children with learning difficulties.

I was at a midweek game at Kilbowie, we never had a game that night and I saw Colin there with 5 of his pupils.

I overheard him saying to someone , the boys he was with had never been to a game before and he took them that night. A fine man by all accounts .

Another kick in the cheenies for Davie Hay was the 85 cup final. The players were in dispute with the board re their bonus for winning the cup. Davie intervened on the players behalf. He gathered them together in the dressing room and probably feeling chuffed with himself, he announced that he had got them a great deal. £2,000 a man. The players were completely underwhelmed and when poor Davie asked what the problem was, Danny informed him they had got that for winning the 1980 final. Shocking way to treat a good man.

Tony, I am quite ambivilent in my views of Murdo . He was a very good player for us but his media work leaves me cold.

In saying that its good he still trying help Big Billy in his time of need.

That 2 nil game at Ibrox was my first time there in a game against them there.

We were not at our best but they were diabolical.

It was the unofficial opening of the Govan Stand and we had about a quarter of the seats in it. We also got half the main stand along with half of the enclosure until Souness appeared when thousands of skelf rideen huns came out the woodwork.

Delaney’s, Colin ended up at the Jags after leaving Ibrox.

Thistle fans I know held him in high regard.

  17. Dallas

Colin MacAdam signed for Oldco from Thistle where he partnered future Celtic ‘legend’ Jim Melrose up front. Think he signed for Hearts after Oldco.

  18. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Pog, the McAdam’s had a difference of opinion in a game we beat them 3 1 in 1981.

It was in Scotsport’s coverage of the game. Both were having a heated discussion after one of our corners. Colin was playing up front in that match.

  20. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Gary, thanks . I forgot he ended up in Gorgie along with another Ibrox non legned , Sandy Clark.

  21. Tom McAdam was Scotland’s first “S” form signing when he joined the Sons. In our first competitive visit to Boghead in over 50 years we gubbed the local side 6-1 with a hatrick from Pat McCluskey, both McAdams lined up for the Sons as was Wispy (who scored their consolation goal), big Cush and the wee triple pike and swallow dive wilson.

Although Pat’s goals were the main highlight of the game another one was an 18 year old Tom and 20 year old Pat coming tae blows on the touchline, luckily for both it was in close proximity tae the dugouts and both players were spared any retribution fae the mitb.

Ironically, Tom would join us a month after Pat left for Boghead where he would play just as many games for the Rock as he did for the Celts.

Tom played for 7 clubs in his career with almost half of his games played for the leather belts, an unsung hero.

For me CQN is of a certain vintage (and a very good one) I think most of us have witnessed the cheats, Lou Macari, even Liam Brady, as a wee kid I loved Liam Brady the footballer …. Anyhow what I am trying to type is we have had loads of not the best times. MON years great, Seville, shoite (the result not the experience for many) I think Brendan is the total real deal, his attitude, his dealings with the Hun press, and even better his dealings with our players, so for me tomorrow will be hyped up and I think I know the fixture but as a game we are playing Partick or Kilmarnock or Hamilton…….mthey new Huns are shoite and I hope they have decades of misery ahead, my Celtic doesn’t have to win, but it’s great when they do :-)

  23. Referees as way no can play a crucial role in influencing games. Apparently Cheaten Beatons 3 howlers didn’t matter because sevco won 6-0 (not they won 6-0 because of the decisions). Would the ref at the Nou camp on Wednesday have given a pen for Suarez falling over if it had been 5-1 at the time. I very much doubt it having he already gave Barca a pen. All the subsequent nonsense of the greatest ever comeback ever was utter garbage.
