Supreme Court gets to grips with Rangers Tax Case

438

I long ago promised to take nothing for granted regarding the Rangers Tax Case, as it confounded my predictions from the off, but with the matter underway today with its final arbiter, The Supreme Court, I’m prepared to go as far as to say: so far, so good.

There is a long way to go – so no one should be out celebrating a draw. The matter will not be settled by the performance of a QC on his feet, rather the finer points of law. Today has been interesting, so far, but we will hopefully be well into our next Champions League group stage games before we hear the outcome.

Alzheimer Scotland were in touch yesterday and asked me to send you this message:

celtic fans thank you (002)

I know they were enormously appreciative that Billy McNeill’s family decided to go public with his situation two weeks ago. The encouragement they have had since has fortified their efforts. Your donation of £3264 blew them away.

Thank you.

  1. Just a quick note to tell you the Scotch Pies went down well with the media. There was an initial issue when Big Derek (that’s what everyone calls him) found the meal cart outside the room on entering. After a quick dash by Clint Hill to ASDA everyone attending each enjoyed at least a quarter of pie before Big Derek gently persuaded them to hand them over. Apparently these will be pies well spent however as Big Derek has promised to take it easy on me tonight on the radio.

Richard Wilson did request a liquorice sherbet afterwords. Apparently it helps keep his tongued tied on the radio. I’ve been told though that even though I spoke to Richard he was not there on behalf of the BBC (Bully the Bears for Celtic) media outlet.

Good night. Off to St Andrew’s Cathedral now for confession and hopefully a quick mass.

It seems the Bishop would like to make my acquaintance. Being the Big Team in Glasgow I’m sure we’ll have lots to talk about relating to our cities favourite team Rangers Then Now & Forever.

Did you remind King Dave that you have to get your best player on Sunday{Madden} into the line up as often as possible?

I know you have fine reserves in Beaton.Thomson and Mclean but Madhun has earned the jersey with his brilliant play on Sunday.

Tell Dave to get on the blower and remind the football authorities who runs the game in this country.

  6. One thing Dave King hs been very good at is playing a Long Game.

    He’s an experienced, well-documented, court-confirmed, shyster.

I tihnk he had 2 objectives in taking control of the Huns: find a nomad and make a killing on shares before ducking out, or – as a back-up – hook in some suckers to commit to the ride with you; ergo the Three Bears, Park being the biggest fish hooked.

Everything’s about to go south for King administratively and by legal ruling; time is always his major consideration.

As far as I can see he’s played his game well and now has Park, etc so deeply committed financially that the absolut endgame will fall upon them to find even more cash to buy King out and save their own current investment, keeping the company afloat, or he will sit in SA and watch the whole edifice crumble.

He’s ‘invested’ nothing; their fear is that he has notihng to lose. He’ll walk away with quite something as they desperately dig deep again.

Either way, time to get a Cash ‘n’ Carry card and stock up on the popcorn, jelly and ice cream.

  7. Did I hear right earlier on the SC stream…..wee Tommy McLean got an EBT!!!!!

If so, can we yank the ECWC aff them tae?

  8. I’m finally getting to watch the Celtic game.

One thing is Certain, almost 30 mins in, Brendan will have his current best 11 on the pitch against the newco, and fired up Big Time for the game that really matters.

Sergeant Alexander Blackman, the Royal Marine who killed an injured Taliban fighter in Afghanistan, has had his murder conviction reduced to “manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility” at the Court Martial Appeal Court.

Five judges ruled that Sgt Blackman was suffering from an “abnormality of mental functioning” at the time of the killing in 2011.

They found the incident was not a “cold-blooded execution” as a court martial had earlier concluded, but the result of a mental illness.

Sgt Blackman, also known as ‘Marine A’, was not present for the ruling.

He has already served three years of a life sentence, and a hearing will now take place to decide what further time he will serve.

EXCLUSIVE: “I Was Relieved” – Colleague Recalls Marine A Killing

Claire Blackman, the wife of Royal Marine Blackman, said she was “delighted” by the decision to reduce her husband’s murder conviction saying it “much better reflects the circumstances that my husband found himself in during that terrible tour of Afghanistan”.

    Play Video

Former RAF pilot and novelist, Frederick Forsyth, who has led a campaign to see Sgt Blackman released, told the crowd outside the court that “it’s not over yet”, and that he “always wanted justice”.

“There are things that need to be said about what was done to that man and who did it to him,” he said.

In a statement, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said they “respect the court’s decision”:

“We have fully co-operated with each stage of Sergeant Blackman’s case, which has now involved a criminal investigation, a court martial and the appeal process, and will continue to provide personal support to the family, as we have done since charges were first brought.”

In 2011, ‘Marine A’ was serving with Plymouth-based 42 Commando in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Blackman shot an insurgent, who had been seriously injured in an attack by an Apache helicopter, in the chest at close range with a 9mm pistol before quoting a phrase from Shakespeare as the man convulsed and died in front of him.

    He told him:

”There you are. Shuffle off this mortal coil, you c***. It’s nothing you wouldn’t do to us.”

He then turned to his comrades and said:

”Obviously this doesn’t go anywhere, fellas. I just broke the Geneva Convention.”

The shooting was captured on a camera mounted on the helmet of another Royal Marine.

He was ”dismissed with disgrace” from the Royal Marines after serving with distinction for 15 years, including tours of Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland.

In November 2013, Sgt Blackman became the first British serviceman to be convicted of murder on a foreign battlefield since the Second World War, and was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 10 years.

In May 2014, the Court Martial Appeal Court rejected a conviction challenge but reduced the minimum term to eight years because of the combat stress disorder he was suffering from.

During his trial, Blackman, who denied murder and was known at that stage as ‘Marine A’, said he believed the victim was already dead and he was taking out his anger on a corpse.

Speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions, Mrs May said that the MoD will continue to provide support to Sgt Blackman’s family and has praised the work the Royal Marines do:

“What I would just say on the general point is that our Royal Marines have a worldwide reputation as one of the world’s elite fighting forces. They make an incredible contribution to our country and we should pay tribute to them all for that.”

” In terms of the details all I can say is this, Celtic holds the principles of fair play dearly and will take action on any occasion where it is proved our Club has been disadvantaged. There has been no collusion or any efforts to assist any of our competitors in any way at any time.

Celtic work independently and only in the interests of Celtic and our supporters. This has always been the case and will continue to be.”

Such cynicism from one so young (compared to me :)

If JPT were to write a missive as you suggested he would not only be being untrue to shareholders he, knowing what he knows, would be untrue to himself and seems to me to have too much respect to do that to himself.

ST pressure might be out of the way by AGM but what will unfold before then will make such a position untenable if folk are to hold on to their self respect.

  29. I wonder if anyone can tell me something I have been thinking about for a while.

When the huns were drafted into the league via the 5 way agreement, one of the stipulations were that sevco would pay all the old huns football debts……so, bear with me, the EBT recipients were furnished with letters telling them that the club would be responsible for any or all tax due.

This being the case, could a player if he is chased by Hector sue sevco since they are liable for all old huns footy debts…..seems like they could from where I am sitting.
