Tactically aware athlete needed

2217

I don’t know anything about Stefan Johansen, who is one of several central midfield players Celtic are tracking, but I’m pleased we’re scouting for this area.  There’s no question we are missing a penalty box predator but you could make a case that the sense of calm and control exerted by Victor Wanyama in the middle of the park is a more telling absence.

Nir Biton has all the potential to get there eventually but it’s going to take him time.  He reminds me of Ki, who a couple of seasons ago was fifth choice central mid for Celtic, behind Brown, Wanyama, Ledley and Kayal.  This season I’ve watched him collect and distribute, close space and bring shape to a struggling Sunderland team.

I’ve also watched a bit of Barry Robson since his return to Aberdeen.  Despite his advancing years he remains one of the most intelligent footballers in the game.  His arrival in the Celtic midfield six years ago changed Celtic into a winning team.    You don’t need Pele for this role, just a tactically aware athlete.

How many accountants does it take to tell you that losing circa £1m per month is not a good idea?  Lots, apparently.

I’m sure Sevco mark II will have a full house for their first ever final, the Govan regional pub league final.

In fact Ibrox will be packed to the rafters, which is all that’ll be left of the roof by then.

    ———

I was listening to the Hearts game on Shortbread yesterday, and Chico Young informed the listener that it was another full house at Ibroke.

Seems all the pictures from the match tell a totally different story though. Not even close to full. They could even move the Zombies that were being showered in plaster to a chair of their choice.

Not that it really matters, aside from the facts that Young was obviously lying and Sevco clearly have more pressing stuff to worry about.

Gangsters able to recruit police officers through secret society, says investigation for Scotland Yard

    Tom Harper Author Biography

    Investigations Reporter

    Sunday 12 January 2014

Secret networks of Freemasons have been used by organised crime gangs to corrupt the criminal justice system, according to a bombshell Metropolitan Police report leaked to The Independent

Operation Tiberius, written in 2002, found underworld syndicates used their contacts in the controversial brotherhood to “recruit corrupted officers” inside Scotland Yard, and concluded it was one of “the most difficult aspects of organised crime corruption to proof against”.

The report – marked “Secret” – found serving officers in East Ham east London who were members of the Freemasons attempted to find out which detectives were suspected of links to organised crime from other police sources who were also members of the society.

Famous for its secret handshakes, Freemasonry has long been suspected of having members who work in the criminal justice system – notably the judiciary and the police.

The political establishment and much of the media often dismiss such ideas as the work of conspiracy theorists. However, Operation Tiberius is the second secret police report revealed by The Independent in the last six months to highlight the possible issue.

Project Riverside, a 2008 report on the rogue private investigations industry by the Serious Organised Crime Agency, also claimed criminals attempt to corrupt police officers through Freemason members in a bid to further their interests.

Concerns over the influence of freemasons on the criminal justice system in 1998 led former Home Secretary Jack Straw to order that all police officers and judges should declare membership of the organisation.

However, ten of Britain’s 43 police forces refused to take part and the policy was dropped under threat of legal action. In England and Wales, the Grand Master of the Freemasons is Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. The United Grand Lodge of England declined to comment last night.

The Independent revealed last week that Operation Tiberius found that organised crime syndicates such as the Adams family and the gang led by David Hunt were able to infiltrate the Met “at will”.

Asked to comment on the Tiberius report, a spokesman for Scotland Yard said: “The Metropolitan Police Service will not tolerate any behaviour by our officers and staff which could damage the trust placed in police by the public.

“We are determined to pursue corruption in all its forms and with all possible vigour.”

Right behind the goals?…. If so, no. I was round a bit to the left. I did have a half celtic half gala scarf that I bought at half time. I was the only Tim in the whole end. Gotta say the gala fans around me were brilliant really looked after me. Had over 50 photos with everyone.

  8. Was impressed with some of the young guys tonight. I’m glad Fraser was playing as I was impressed when I saw him in the European tie a few years ago. I believe he has had a bad injury since.

This is where I have to put my tin hat on.

    Balde no!!

First touch poor, turning circle of the Titanic, wants far too long on the ball, and has poor vision. Good points he is good at running on to a pass and he has an eye for goal. He will win us a lot of free kicks simply because of his size. However I firmly believe that if a player does not have a good touch at his current age he will never have one.

Pukki I like however this has got to be tempered by the fact that he is timid in front of goal. He needs to be braver. He does have a good touch and vision but must try harder.

I’m concerned that we seem to have a complete lack of understanding in any of the two forwards, out of four, who take to the field from one week to the next. This can’t be good half way through the season. Some one needs to start coaching these guys where they are expected to run when the ball is in specific areas. The forwards need to get closer together to enable them to work as a partnership.

  9. very good outing for the young players including balde in that bracket. I have argued for as long as I can remember that we have very good young players in the academy who unfortunately don’t get the opportunity to play in our first team which prohibits their progress. the progress of henderson, miller, fisher etc… will be determined by their opportunity to develop in the first team not their ability.

I hope we are now seeing a pathway for our academy players to progress into our first team. if academy players made up the bulk of our first team we could focus on bringing in fewer but better quality young/ experienced players. we might actually find more quality youth players (13 to18 year olds) willing come to us because of a progressive pathway into the first team.

We probably didn’t have one because experienced and intelligent footballers don’t need one but remember we are always buying ‘projects’ so now we do need such a coach.

I concluded my weekend watching a clutch of young Celts emerge with my ageing father. I have a feeling I will treasure the memory of this particular Sabbath.

Though Herron, Henderson, Fraser, Fisher, O’Connell may not all go on to be Celtic greats, the law of averages tells me one or two might. In addition, Biton and particularly Forrest, will undoutedly carve their names into the history of the club.

Neil Lennon’s greatest advantage is that people underestimate him. Long may that continue. Astute, pragmatic, progressive, passionate – we are lucky to have him. Imperfect of course, but that’s the human condition.

His decision to head to Turkey has given the club (and I assume many of the players – young and old) a shot in the arm. Imagine being James Forrest and handed the Celtic captaincy aged 22 !!

The future’s bright. I’m delighted I spent the afternoon drinking wine with my old man, reminiscing and looking forward.

How much better are the forwards at clubs where the coaches are former great strikers? How good were the Landskrona strikers under Larrson? How good were Lincoln’s under Sutton? How good were celtic’s under the journeyman Centre Half Jock Stein?

  20. 67Heaven … I am Neil Lennon, supporting WEE OSCAR..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors

Yep that will be him running on to a ball and displaying his eye for goal which I mentioned in the original post. However when he has his back to goal he invariably loses the ball because his touch is poor. This is not ‘hold up target man’ potential.

an excellent point about Jock Stein. Focus on getting the players doing what they are naturally good at. You couldn’t coach Jinky to do what he did, for example.

Hoping NL gives all our future prospects a chance, in what remains of our league campaign as it can only be a beneficial to their confidence.

  25. Philbhoy

Agreed, problem I see is that Lenny want’s to go through the season undefeated, so there is little chance of game time for most of them, shame really.

When our kids beat Liverpool at the start of the season, I was hoping many would get their chance, and was surprised when they didn’t.

We are a selling club, this has come from the top, I can’t get the head around why we keep buying in the hope we find a diamond, shirly some of the kids will shine and make us money, instead of buying in the hope.

We have coaches to improve our forwards and they work daily to do so. Where is the evidence that a forwards specific coach is a good idea? and I mean from the sport of football not from compartmentalised sports like Rugby, American Football and cricket?
