Tanks on the lawns of Uefa

The premier business paper where Uefa is headquartered in Nyon, Tribune de Geneve, today ran an advert, paid for by public subscription, questioning the governance of Scottish football.

IMG_0729

The advert asked readers to reference The Offshore Game report: Doing SFA for Fair Play and explained some of the issues governance, accountability and oversight in Scottish football.  It reads:

“A report by The Offshore Game (TOG), an arm of The Tax Justice Network (TJN), has highlighted examples of poor SFA governance in respect of:

• A Commission established in 2012 by the Scottish Premier League to investigate the use of employee benefit trusts to reduce the tax paid to HMRC by an SFA member club where the SFA provided key testimony which is now being questioned.

• The processing of a UEFA Licence in 2011 by The SFA when Court Officers called to collect overdue tax from a member club between Champions League and Europa League qualifying games. Proving there were no overdue and unpaid taxes was a condition of granting then retaining a licence to compete in both UEFA competitions. The tax concerned was never paid!

• The SFA have neither commented on the TJN report nor attempted to address the issues it raises. The TJN has called for an independent review of the SFA to make it more accountable.

• A group of shareholders of Celtic PLC acting in terms of Resolution 12 of the Celtic PLC AGM of 2013, have been pressing the SFA for over two years for a satisfactory explanation of their administration of the UEFA licensing process in 2011. In the absence of any meaningful reply they have now taken up the case with the UEFA Club Financial Control Body.

The TOG report highlights the financial cost over a decade to the British Taxpayer in Millions of pounds. The cost to Scottish football in terms of the loss of trust placed in the SFA to govern the Scottish game with integrity is incalculable.

Football fans everywhere are invited to read this important report into the game in Scotland.”

Our game suffers from a perceived lack of oversight, accountability and governance; fundamental requirements in modern sport which have been painfully lacking across world football for decades.  Uefa now have an opportunity to measure where Scottish football, and their own processes, are on these metrics.

Here’s a thought, have the STV now made it too big a deal to be swept under the carpet by UEFA, continuing to write to them over two weeks give it a higher profile than we could ever have made it :oD))))

  5. Read somewhere that nature of THEIR Board’s post semi final celebrations touched a raw nerve with the Great Absentee. Anybody know anything about this?

  6. I see the gobshite from the SFA is trying to say Resolution 12 was dealt with. Rhetorical question – when does a compulsive liar stop lying?

I seem to remember a certain Sepp Blatter saying run along everybody nothing to see here. Remind me, how did that pan out in the end?

Well done to the Res 12 Bhoys.

    WINNING CAPTAINS

Please dont let one disgruntled poster weaken your (plural) resolve. You will have the support of the vast majority of us and if we need to fund a judicial review, so be it. HH

I have raised the issue of a possible Judicial Revue on CQN and with CQNers before. If that is what it takes to finally resolve outstanding issues in legal platform then so be it. I’m in once the ongoing proceedings have taken their course.

Also surprised about some of the negativity on here. If you expected fireworks today then that was never going to happen. As they say the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.

This is also the day of the SFA AGM. Anyone expecting a ‘bar room brawl’ there about Res12 hasn’t been to too many AGMs. The Celtic board as with any other participants will be constrained to a measured response where and when applicable. Critics of the board (and I can include myself in there on occasion) will always have been a critic of the board regardless.

As can be seen already by the (well coached) responses from SFA it will be a case of “Wisnae me. A big boy did it and ran away”. We are up against a huge inertia of ‘vested interests’ who have much to gain and a massive amount to lose if their position disintegrates.

Remember, what do Sevco, their PR co Level 5 and the SMSM have in common ? Clue – I bump into one every day at my David Lloyd club – a Gym Trainer.

Rocket Man – a former Celtic chairman on the very board which investigates UEFA licensing issues. What a stroke of luck !!

If the huns and SFA dodge this bullet you’d be forgiven for thinking Celtic may be complicit.

What we are beginning to see unfold here is I believe sadly a betrayal of the requisitioners and another ugly truth about what the Celtic board really stand for.

    Let’s see what happens next.

Hope you are wrong but fear you may be right.

  15. Justice Secretary Michael Matheson has issued an ultimatum to Scottish football bosses, saying the government could step in to tackle crowd disorder.

Just as well we were not involved.

  16. How quickly the usual suspects swivel theie ‘tanks and guns’ around to target the Celtic boardroom once again.

If Rangers(IL) can’t be blamed – if the SFA can’t be blamed – if UEFA can’t be blamed, no worries, just dump it all on DD, PL and the board.

Can we really expect UEFA to ‘bend over backwards’ in this five year old issue, when our fans hang out F*** UEFA banners, set off flares and cause the club to be fined and centured whenever we play in Europe?

I said earlier that I could see no successful outcome to this issue, unless the SFA ‘held their hands up’ – now they have spoken, that obviously isn’t going to happen.

This whole thing is now developing into an exercise in semantics.

Let’s hope that those why may be left with ‘ouef surs leurs visages’, do not turn inwards against Celtic FC. It may please the tiny minority on here and other sites to cause trouble, however the vast majority will not stand for it as we move into the ‘Brendan era’

I’d say that the chances of the Guardian carrying the ‘advert’ have now diminished substantially.

It seems to me that the Requisitioners have been outflanked and could be humiliated – the club’s legal advisors are paid to ensure that this does not happen to Celtic.

  17. Neustadt-Braw on

Now back to the fitba……where will we play the big Swedish lad that’s signing after the Euros…???

  18. Well done to those involved with Res12 and placing the ad in the Tribune De Geneve today.

    Two things that strike me: why haven’t any of the other Scottish clubs fans backed the Res12? Throughout Sevco’s short existence and travels to all the club’s in the lower divisions we have heard stories of opposition fans taunting the club on their new-founded status – so some must be aware of the SFA’s manipulation;

secondly, the Hibs fans in the SCF final taunted the Sevco supporters with their clubs win and silverware – are we going to see more scenes like this next season when the SPFL clubs – all enemies in the eyes of Sevco?

We need our shareholders and all of football to have faith that Scottish football has been and continues to be run fairly.

Tanks on the Lawn of UEFA…..Deary,deary me…..such imagery of General Lawwell and his white surrender handkerchief pleading with the officials not to attack him with their Swiss Army Knives.

Hats off to the Resolution 12 boys at least they drove a tank that fired a few rounds.

General Lawwell and his plc board would have been great servants in the equally treacherous WW2 Italian Army Tank Division, where the easiest gear to engage was REVERSE.

Why would anyone trust the plc board with Lawwell as CEO?

There is no evidence, from their previous (in)actions, that any of them have the cojones to leave their comfort zones
