Tanks on the lawns of Uefa

The premier business paper where Uefa is headquartered in Nyon, Tribune de Geneve, today ran an advert, paid for by public subscription, questioning the governance of Scottish football.

IMG_0729

The advert asked readers to reference The Offshore Game report: Doing SFA for Fair Play and explained some of the issues governance, accountability and oversight in Scottish football.  It reads:

“A report by The Offshore Game (TOG), an arm of The Tax Justice Network (TJN), has highlighted examples of poor SFA governance in respect of:

• A Commission established in 2012 by the Scottish Premier League to investigate the use of employee benefit trusts to reduce the tax paid to HMRC by an SFA member club where the SFA provided key testimony which is now being questioned.

• The processing of a UEFA Licence in 2011 by The SFA when Court Officers called to collect overdue tax from a member club between Champions League and Europa League qualifying games. Proving there were no overdue and unpaid taxes was a condition of granting then retaining a licence to compete in both UEFA competitions. The tax concerned was never paid!

• The SFA have neither commented on the TJN report nor attempted to address the issues it raises. The TJN has called for an independent review of the SFA to make it more accountable.

• A group of shareholders of Celtic PLC acting in terms of Resolution 12 of the Celtic PLC AGM of 2013, have been pressing the SFA for over two years for a satisfactory explanation of their administration of the UEFA licensing process in 2011. In the absence of any meaningful reply they have now taken up the case with the UEFA Club Financial Control Body.

The TOG report highlights the financial cost over a decade to the British Taxpayer in Millions of pounds. The cost to Scottish football in terms of the loss of trust placed in the SFA to govern the Scottish game with integrity is incalculable.

Football fans everywhere are invited to read this important report into the game in Scotland.”

Our game suffers from a perceived lack of oversight, accountability and governance; fundamental requirements in modern sport which have been painfully lacking across world football for decades.  Uefa now have an opportunity to measure where Scottish football, and their own processes, are on these metrics.

  1. Tambourine Bhoy of 1967 on

    Good evening to all.

Haven’t caught up with the blog today… I began to read from the start (always sensible to begin at the start) but I see a few are ‘fighting’ and becoming agitated regarding the Reso12tion.

    Understandable, sure. Constructive? No.

I have, as we all probably do, massive gratitude and respect for what these folks are trying to achieve. We’re in the same boat, but we’re relying on a few to do the paddling while the rest sit back and ask “are we there yet?”.

Feck, it’s frustrating! But… have some patience. We’re heading in the right direction. The guilty will be exposed. Justice (to an extent) will be done. Our time will come.

Let’s not make our own ‘journey’ less enjoyable than it should be! Let’s enjoy being good folks, and let the thunder of what will be rumble loud!

Things could always be worse… so let’s focus on the positive.

I see Lian Henderson has signed for Falkirk.

Hopefully that is the kid from Hearts and not our Liam.

  3. Surprised at Regan breaking the silence today, obviously shitting himself.

All it needs is a little push from the club and they are toast I reckon, sadly I won’t be holding my breath waiting.

  4. Phew! It’s the ex-Hearts Liam Henderson as oposed to our 2016-17 corner kick taker ;-)

  5. Well done to the Resolution 12 Team, sterling work.

I must confess that still have my doubts on whether you will achieve the post outcome you set out to get. Tiny Tim alluded to it…all for one and one for all.

Winning Captains has posted many cryptic posts over the last week or so about how interesting times lie ahead, I have yet to be convinced, today for me has been a damp squib. Any action the Resolution 12 Team took with backing of their financial backers who contributed to the Advertisements should have coincided with a statement from the Club. If there was a delay in the Club getting information because it could not be sent electronically then the advertisement today should not have put in, perhaps it should have been pulled until next week.

What happens next, if UEFA choose not to take action, what are the next steps!

What happens next, if the Board choose not to make the statement we all so want!

I agree with Auldheid, we have waited three years, what’s another 48 hours until the Board digest the information they are now in receipt of. However, after 48 hours it is put up or shut up as far as I am concerned.

The Resolution 12 Team have done a fantastic job, put it out there both on the Blog, social media and now in the foreign press. Alas the press in our own Country do nothing, why, because they are as corruptible as the footballing establishment they grovel to earn their coin.

I have my doubts that the efforts of the Resolution 12 Team will win the day and why…because today was the day, the day that the advertisement came out for the Board to state where they stand, why haven’t they because it was discovered at the eleventh hour they would not have information…I once got stung by a Solicitor handling a conveyance for me, bags and van packed they phoned me on the day, sorry we cannot complete, something was not in place. Had to hand over keys for my old place, back to living with my Parents for a weekend.

I’ve never commented much on the Resolution 12, thought I would let it ride, knowing things take time, that is why I am prepared to wait another 48 hours. If nothing is forthcoming I can only assume the Board are not interested in pursuing the issue, that would be sad.

Tanks on the Lawn infers that the Cannons are about to be fired, let us hope that Cannonballs have been loaded.

Lastly, whilst I appreciate that debate on the blog has assisted the Resolution 12 Team get to where they are at, what would for me was not welcome was all the cryptic posts from Winning Captains, not having a pop but it came across as something from my childhood…I know something you don’t know…

Paul67 alluded to in some recent articles about marking our card, that was as much as needed to be said in my opinion. The promise of fireworks going off have not materialised, damp squib.

All for one and one for all…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  6. JAMESGANG@6:12.

When the dust settles and there is no outcome on Resultion 12, neither good, nor, bad, then rest-assured that PL and the board will become the scapegoats of the relative handful of our supporters who are predisposed to this issue. Dermot, at the moment, appears to have been given leave to vacate the ‘naughty step’ after Brendan’s appointment.

What is the point/purpose in going ahead with the Guardian advert – the ‘goal posts’ seemingly have been moved.

It appears to me that Whyte just continued lying to everyone in the way he did with Ticketus. I am not excusing the SFA, it just seems that unless we are prepared to call their officers’ liars and raise a court action, then there is nowhere to go.

Celtic as a member of the SFA are unable to do this.

So watch this space as PL and the board are now ‘hung, drawn and quartered’

  7. Well done big guy, you’ve bored me for years babbling about this on the frank gallachers nights out, now it’s coming getting out there, if Celtic back this will Pedro renew is book? Pedro??

    Mats..,

Here’s the long and short, running a multi national corporation is a cutthroat business and neither local authorities or rules stand on the way of the shareholders interests. Unless, there is a gravy train for the elite to enable their own career advancement.

The long and short for every Plc director is, integrity or gravey, we know your preference tony gravey every time and damn the consequences, it’s just that there are honest people looking for better and there always will be.

  9. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Bam..,

Supporting this is pretty much the only way they will see pedro’s money, remind me how many Hampden gigs did he turn up for ?

We found out about the reason for the delay last night after a Res 12 chap asked me to ask Paul….

It transpired that they put the submission in the post to Celtic rather than email it as planned at the end of last week.

The ad was already placed, paid for and had gone through numerous legal and editorial hoops, which took up a considerable amount of my time.

I have been trying to alert everyone to what is starting to transpire. A better view on this is tonight on the James Forrest Celtic blog.

I was asked by a Res 12 chap to organise the crowd funding and the ad which I have done willingly and for no other reason than to assist.

I am sorry that you haven’t liked my posts, much of what I was hinting at is now happening. It was not possible to post any more than I did.

You won’t be troubled in future, so that will chear you up.

For everyone else beware the Celtic haters. Au Revoir.

And you always seemed that interested too :)

    Project managers are all invertibrate

    @7.43

I’m not what you said in that post provides the evidence rather than supposition that was prominent in your previous post?

And if the board do nothing – if – then it won’t be so much blame from those disposed towards doing so. It’ll be the sense of failed responsibility among neutrals like me that’ll be most telling.

  13. JAMESGANG…

According to his song sheet BS will be singing a song entitled no surrender according to a bloke in work…could be another battle on the Hamden turf tonight.

Will the SFA/Police take action or is it just football neds that causes it!

No rugby neds, they just have a good jolly.

    WC,

You now understand the frustration of putting your head on the block, I told you about being too hasty and the raw enthusiasm of an idealist, don’t let the buggers bring you down, there were pitfalls but you managed the sudden shifts and dealt with the glitches very well in my expert opinion :)

Never back down to gobshites and pricks that don’t know what it feels like to put their cock on the block trying to make a difference, hail hail winning captains, I’ll stand beside you and call you bruv.

    :)

  17. Vive Les Resolutioners!!!

Just wanted to place on record my gratitude . Incredible endurance .

Amazing what can be done when you are fighting for a people and a cause.

What a smug so and so that Regan is.

He is either supremely confident or its his last act of defiance.

Hope to God it’s the latter.

I have a feeling it will be.

This is a battle we will win.

And the whole house of cards will come tumbling down!!

  18. Canamalar@7:56

I agree with what you say about many large companies and I in no way condone it.

In Celtic’s case, surely as shareholders and guardians of the club, their overriding priority is the well-being of the club, whilst of course obeying the law and being in compliance with all necessary procedures and guidelines.

Re the teasing, I know how much hard work has went into this, so when a break through is perceived the guys must be desperate to let us know, even though they sometimes can’t. Albeit this is a very serious issues and people are hanging on every word, so you won’t please everyone. Both great guys and Celtic men, KTF and stick together.

  20. you’ve got to admire the requisitioners, but this is fundamentally doomed because Celtic have simply accepted the “same club” myth, and are complicit in the scandal.

if Fergus had been in charge we’d have squashed this nonsense in an instant.

our board are simply craven, sadly.
