The costs of dropping Giakoumakis for Kyogo

237

All going well, in the weeks ahead, Ange Postecoglou will consider replacing his current Most Valuable Player – Giorgos Giakoumakis – with his MVP from the first half of the season, Kyogo Furuhashi.

It is easy to forget how early we are in the formation of this Celtic team.  Daizan Maeda and Reo Hatate are only here two months, Matt O’Riley less than that.  None have teamed up with Kyogo, they have spent little time with playing with Yosuke Ideguchi, James Forrest or David Turnbull.

That bizarrely easy win in February over Newco implied the new model had a maturity that was not there yet.  A month of indifferent performances followed, with a harsh truth delivered by Bodo/Glimt.  On good surfaces and against Premiership opposition, the system is again looking fabulous.

A big part of this system is what Giakoumakis gives us in the air – two headed goals and one headed assist on Saturday.  Without him, we have the appearance of a front line that could not jump and touch the crossbar.  We would also lose an additional strong defender at set-pieces.

The temptation to make Kyogo the new focus could be overwhelming, he was that impressive.  He brings things to Celtic we have not seen in years.  Question is, what will the costs be of dropping Giorgos, or rejigging the entire setup to fit both in?

If Sevco have offered Celtic 700 tickets for Ibrox, take them. When Celtic win, the 700 will give the players and Ange a focus for an on-field celebration. Otherwise it will be straight off the park at full-time.

I hear you were in George Square in 2014 the day after the referendum waving your union flag with your fellow unionists, Rangers supporters and orangemen – now there’s a venn diagram – celebrating the NO vote.

How did they react when you went round telling them they should be supporting independance as it will result in an orange anti-Catholic, anti-Irish, white supremacist nation?

I bet that was a laugh eh?

The difference being that Billy Wolfe rose through the ranks of the SNP to become its leader without anyone noticing or taking exception to his ideas.

  5. The idea that our team takes on a completely different life form depending on the choice between GG v Kyogo is a simplistic piece of nonsense.

The idea that we can play both (at different times) and keep our system intact is the prize. Maeda as a developing left sided forward cum winger is also intriguing as he’s quick enough to do both the attacking and pressing at the same time.

Keeping the hun pinned back will be key to our success and not allowing them a foothold for attacking us. Pass and move and accuracy in our forward play and we’ll create chances galore.

At least learn to spell independence.

  7. It’s funny to think that if the referendum had gone the other way Alex Salmond would now be deified as The Father of The Nation, rather than being regarded as an opportunistic, money grubbing sleazebag and Putin shill.

Alex Salmond is indeed a sleazebag…power does that to people.

Captain Hindsight and Borisovsky are both sleazebags also.

On your reply above, your trying to play it down is more a reflection of not being honest with yourself.

You will slag the SNP for two of its previous leaders from a time when most of the people who are current members and representatives weren’t even born.

Yet you play down a current situation of a bigot being chosen for your party of choice.

Not sure Bolingoli was the “scapegoat” for the Dubai experience but rather for his own Spanish mini-break after which he ended up on the pitch against Kilmarnock I think it was. And anyways I won’t hear a word said against Dubai, which for me was the highlight of last season, bit o brekkie, a kickabout and a game of hit the bar, and then hitting the bar for real by mid afternoon…..

    By Joe Sullivan

Here we take the opportunity to revisit some Celtic games and tales from this day in the club’s past.

How did the club fare on this day in the past?

    1902

Celtic’s first game on this day was in 1902 when they played St Mirren in the Scottish Cup semi-final down in Paisley. Geordie Livingstone (below), Johnny Campbell and Tommy McDermott got the goals in the 3-2 win. However, there was to be no cup joy as Hibernian won 1-0 in what was billed as the ‘Irish Cup’ final on April 26 with John Divers, as the first player to move from Celtic to Hibs, winning a medal.

    1933

The Hoops played another Scottish Cup semi-final on this day in 1933 although on this occasion it was a replay with the opposition being Hearts. After disposing of Dunfermline, Falkirk, Partick Thistle and Albion Rovers (after a replay) before meeting the Edinburgh side. A crowd of 87,000 took in a 0-0 draw on March 18 and four days later another 63,756 turned up to see goals from Jimmy McGrory and Alec Thomson give Celtic a 2-1 win. On April 15, a crowd of 102,339 saw another goal from McGrory give Celtic a 1-0 final win over Motherwell.

    1958

On this day in 1958, Sean Fallon played his final game for Celtic when Airdrie visited the East End of Glasgow on league duty. A 15,000 crowd took in the action and Alec Byrne opened the scoring in the 28th minute and Bobby Collins added another just three minutes later. The visitors pulled one back before the break but inside a two-minute spell soon after the turnaround, Collins added another two, the first of those from the spot, to claim a hat-trick. Airdrie netted another goal but the game finished 4-2 to the Celts.

    1969

There was yet more Scottish Cup semi-final action on this day in 1969 when Celtic and Morton faced up at Hampden. The Celts kicked-off that cup campaign with a 3-3 draw with Partick Thistle but followed that up with an 8-1 win in the replay. It also took a replay to see of Clyde before St Johnstone were beaten 3-2. In the semi-final, a 48,349 crowd saw Morton take the lead after only two minutes but Willie Wallace equalised 10 minutes later. Billy McNeill added another just before the break before Stevie Chalmers and Jimmy Johnstone made the final score 4-1. In the final, a crowd of 132,870 saw Celtic beat Rangers 4-0 with McNeill, Bobby Lennox and George Connelly netting in the first half and Chalmers hitting the fourth in the second period.

    1972

On this day in 1972, Celtic played Ujpest Dozsa in the quarter-final of the European up and the new breed of Danny McGrain, George Connelly, Davie Hay, Kenny Dalglish and Lou Macari were now holding their own in the side and outnumbering the Lisbon Lions’ contingent of Billy McNeill, Bobby Murdoch and Bobby Lennox.. The Celts had won 2-1 in Budapest with Jozsef Horvath scoring for both sides before Macari netted in the 85th minute. At Celtic Park, a 75,000 crowd saw the visitors take the lead after only five minutes but Macari struck again in the 64th minute to give Celtic a 3-2 aggregate win. In the semi-final, Celtic lost to Inter Milan on penalties.

    1986

Celtic travelled to Ibrox on this day in 1986 and a ding-doing of a game produced a 4-4 draw with Rangers. Celtic were 2-0 up after half-an-hour with goals from Maurice Johnston and Brian McClair. However, with Celtic down to 10 men after just 33 minutes, the home side pulled one back before half-time. Just two minutes after the break, Tommy Burns made it 3-1 to Celtic but by the 63rd minute the score was 4-3 to Rangers. The best was left until the 70th minute when Murdo MacLeod sent a 30-yard screamer into the net to make it 4-4. The point proved to be vital as on May 3 of that year, Celtic beat St Mirren 5-0 at Love Street while Dundee beat title-challengers Hearts 2-0 at Dens Park on a final dramatic day.2006

On their way to winning the title in season 2005/06, the Celts welcomed Inverness Caley Thistle for a Wednesday night match on this date. Stephen McManus and Shaun Maloney scored in each half before Richard Hart pulled one back in the 90th minute to make the final score 3-2 to the Hoops.

  21. So we have orc vs goblin on the other side of the city

On one side you’ve got the glib and shameless liar. His pet fangroup sent out on the attack. Making what seems like fair criticisms of the Ibrox board. For their own nefarious reasons of course. They want GASL back and blazers for themselves.

Then you have Parks running things like his own family business. Doing as he pleases. Appointing a known bigot DUP Councillor and senior Orangeman as head of PR. Hence this PR disaster.
