The Great Leap between SPFL and Inter Milan

859

Making the great leap between playing Scottish Premiership teams and the likes of Inter Milan will always be a challenge for Celtic.  We have done so many times in recent years, Milan were held home and away in the Champions League knock-out stage, Barcelona were beaten, but whenever we have carried the game to opponents of this stature, instead of reverting to our own style of catnenaccio, we’ve lost heavily.  Quicker, more skilful, players, could make us look statuesque by comparison.

This is not a criticism.  If the only way you can compete with a team with ten times your resources is to defend your 18 yard line, you should do so.

Things could have gone either way on Thursday.  We were defensively inept during the opening minutes as Inter found space goal-side of their markers.  I don’t know if Ronny had a moment of self-doubt at that point, perhaps he did, but was simply unable to unwind the attacking instincts of his players, but Celtic are all the better for the way they picked themselves off the floor.

I’m sure the odds on Inter progressing will be short, but I’m also sure Ronny Deila will know his players can win in Milan.

I arrived home late last night to read that Tony Conway, son of our own RWE, lost his battle against Motor Neurone Disease/ALS.  I met Tony, with dad John and brother Martin, three years ago.  Tony was still fit enough to walk, but evidence of the pain the family shared was evident.  The three of them travelled back from their US home two years ago, along with mum Pauline, to see Celtic, and meet some family.

They bought hospitality tickets and minutes before kick-off, Celtic’s Iain Jamieson nabbed Tony and asked if he was able to make the halftime draw.  Tony knew this would be the last time he would see Celtic, so his journey up the tunnel and onto the park was, to put it mildly, a very special Celtic Park moment.

  1. BSR – Just got back from son in law duties (sister in law taking over the monitoring role – Mum in law back from hospital – thankfully) and am well disappointed to have missed such a great night. Am sure the rafters were shaking! Maybe a wee surprise to come in Italia; we can still hope :))

  2. I knew it was wrong as a teenager.

The commentators would praise the ‘atmosphere’ at Ibrox or Hampden when their full hideous songbook was getting pelters. Did they not hear the words? I was urged to support the Scottish team in Europe and decried for not doing so. They called me a bigot, irony was never their strong point.

In my early twenties I phoned a radio station to make that very point. The gist of their argument was that Celtic were just as bad. Their arguments were well rehearsed and they couldn’t understand why I didn’t support Rangers in Europe. I explained football rivalry to them and that club’s policy re RC’s. I was cut off.

Slowly they are being exposed and social media has turned a spotlight on them. The SMSM still spout the tired old whataboutery as they top up their pension pots. They are a disgrace to their noble profession. Sevco missed a chance to start anew and I hold no hope of King et al sucking the poison from the club because it is that very poison they rely on to survive.

In a week where we’ve experienced some incredible highs and tried to promote Scottish football on the European stage, the sectarian snake slithers once again from its south-side lair to shame Scottish football.

When will the commentators on Superscoreboard (ref 21/02/15 show) call the Rangers fans chant “up to our knees in Fenian blood” exactly what it is.

I come from Glasgow and Fenian in these parts means Catholic so instead of describing the loathsome chant under the catch all term of sectarianism call it what it is.

It is anti-Catholic and makes reference to the murder of Catholics ie “up to our knees in Fenian blood”

I had a befuddled conversation a few weeks ago where I thought people were saying that the Kelvin Hall was to be converted to flats but turns out it was Kelvinhaugh School they were talking about. I think. The old ears aren’t what they were. Creeping physical obsolescence. Don’t get old! I hear by sense of smell these days. And the nose isn’t great either.

“How on Earth is singing a national anthem possibly sectarian? @JimDelahunt If I sang La Marseillaise tomorrow would that be sectarian too”?

“La Marseillaise is fine – it would only be a problem if Celtic had been founded by a Frenchman ”

” only if ye sung it with an Irish accent!!!”

You’re a good man, and we’ll wait till the next time.

I was in the Jock Stein Stand on Thursday and it was literally moving when the singing was in full flow.

The turkeys are never going to vote for Christmas

A caller asked Radio Clyde phone in during the week-

“when they they accept Scottish football will be better without a rangers club?”

The caller added “Murray was the main man, when White was the great white-hope, then Green was the man, Ashley, but now King is their king.”

I don’t know how much they get paid a show but if Celtic and a rangers team were going neck and neck for trophys you can guarantee their wage packets would be bigger.

Therefore despite a boom in football in the east of the country the lie will be continue thanks to the west of Scotland media.

I’m going from memory but if you check you will find that when Rangers were originally brought to account by UEFA for singing the Billy Boys they escaped censure on the grounds that Fenian had no sectarian, as in “Catholic” meaning.

However the original UEFA ruling was overturned but I’m not sure who by in UEFA or why, on the grounds that Fenian in the context of history clearly meant Catholic.

I mention this only to reinforce your point about what The Billy Boys does that no other song on either side does to the same degree and that is to offer violence to a group in society based on their religion. It’s not about offending, it’s about threatening.

The SPFL in examining the case should be looking at UEFA’S ruling on the matter and why and simply decide what is an appropriate punishment and not attempting to justify non action on a meaningless tick list.

The departed entity had previous form that saw them sanctioned and as that form is being repeated then so too should the sanctions.

Time for SPFL and SFA to man up. Closed door matches for the next televised games involving them would seem in order.

If SSB do answer you can use the UEFA history to reinforce your point if it helps.

  10. I also meant to add their needs to be an appetite either in the media or SFA for truth.

When it comes to rangers there is appetite to find the truth.

Why is Murray not riding back on a big white stallion to their rescue?

There has been more sightings of Lord Lucan than Murray.

  11. Weefra, great news about your goodlady, you will both sleep well tonight.HH

I can’t make the game tomorrow as I’m working, even knocked back hospitaliy in the number 7.

Stop these Sunday games, Feckin nightmare for the pennies we get from Sky/Bt.

Bums on seats ……get back to Saturday football.

  13. Complaint sent to Irish embassy, accompanied by my passport number, as to why my national anthem is being referred to as sectarian by a “presenter” on a “radio” programme.

    Complaint also sent to snyde.

Great news about Mrs Weefra. Caps a great tim week.

The Jock Stein upper was definitely moving up and down at all 3 goals on Thursday. I felt it too.

  15. Oh, and as for Snyde tying us in with the hun singing monkeys, it will never change…no matter what format they come up with, there is still a fan base that will be accommodated for.

Just like the powers that be accommodate their marches.

  18. The goverment need to admit Scotland has a problem before it will get better. That Scotland has a problem with people blessing themselves tells you everything.
