The news is not the headlines, it’s the ABC figures

303

Why the disbelief that a Tom Boyd comment on Celtic TV on Saturday is still occupying news inches on Tuesday?  Tom did not indulge in profanity or prejudice; he merely made a partisan comment on an in-house broadcast channel.  But here’s the thing, he did so on a quiet news day.

Had Celtic lost to Dunfermline on Saturday, Tom’s profound musings would never have been reported, the 24-hour news cycle would have been filled by more important matters.

The football news industry, of which we are all consumers, requires stories, even when nothing of note happens.  The pressures of being a staff reporter at a media outlet, which is perpetually downsizing, when your job is to deliver a story people want to read and there is just no story to tell, should be clear to understand.

This is not justification for throwing Tom under the ink barrel, but it should temper our engagement with the process.  For reasons that escape my memory right now, we do not have a game tonight or tomorrow, so we might have to wait until Thursday before Ever-Green-TB gets a break.

Until then, the news is not the headlines; it’s the ABC circulation figures, which are again heavy with red ink.  The Record, which sold over 500k copies per day when CQN started 15 years ago, shipped 110k last month, a 78% fall in unit sales, the same is true elsewhere.  This is why Tom Boyd became a multi-day story.  It could be anyone tomorrow.

  1. In the last 14 months we’ve :

Replaced Armstrong with Mulumbu, who has since been freed

Replaced Dembele with Bayo (4 months later) and he hasn’t started a game

    Replaced Rodgers with Lennon

    Replaced Lustig with Elbamed

    Replaced Boyata with Julien

    Replaced Tierney with Bolingoli

Effectively replaced Sinclair in first team squad with Morgan

We have no scouting network and rely on recommendations from ex players and agents for players.

    We have no recruitment strategy.

    We do not forward plan.

If that is not downsizing on a massive scale then I don’t know what is!

That’s selective reading. Omitting the fact we broke our transfer record on Eddy.

Twisting the facts something awful. Fooling nobody.

  3. Transfermarkt just updated the values of Scottish players. They know nothing.

Morelos & Eddy joint top on £6.75 million. Second highest Tavernier & Julien at £5.40 million.

    Ajer down at £2.40 million.

Ridiculous “both sides are equal” nonsense.

We generally operate on a one out one in positional basis. The post from Gary can’t have been twisting the facts ‘something awful’ if you only had one point you thought significant enough to post in retort! (and that was a guy that was previously in the squad on loan so was not a new face so to speak).

All of those things in that post are factually correct.

Could not wait to get the flight out and collect the gold.

probably would have prefered to stay

They have our squad market value at £61.6m and the huns at £43m, so not quite ‘both sides are equal’.

Its a fantastic resource but yeah the individual valuations are often (highly) subjective.

  8. The above does not equate losing LG who has scored > 100 goals for us.

It may not be a transfer issue, but nevertheless it was a great loss.

Hopefully he can regain his previous scoring record.

Correct Edouard already in place to take over from Dembele when he left, where was the new striker to come in as 2nd/3rd choice and give us 3 strikers in the squad?

Would you trust Bayo as Edouard replacement if Eddy left before 2nd September? is anyone lined up for such an eventuality?

I think ours are better atmosphere wise and generally a lot more intelligent, able to ask pertinent questions of those running the show and get behind the team at the same time.

11 days since KT left, week since Cluj pumped us, yet still not one signing despite Lennon saying BEFORE Cluj he wanted 2 in for the game & claiming we had replacement lined if KT left. What a fu**ing embarrassment.

He is what the board want though – a yes man & here to stay 🤮

  12. HOT SMOKED on 21ST AUGUST 2019 9:59 AM

    Of course you are joking?

We will get through this period.

    We are Celtic.

We have been spoiled to an extent in recent times. As soon as we get some solid results under our belt we will come together again.

Lennon made an arse of it last tuesday but he will learn from that and get better no matter what he said about it in the press.

At least we have a manager who has absolutely zero ambition to do anything other than manage us when he wakes up in the morning.

The other side of glasgow might think they are about to be on the crest of a wave but even if all their dreams came true and the won the title their celebrity manager would be gone in 5 minutes back to his promised land of the premier league leaving a trail of millions in wages behind him.

  13. The premise that Rangers were light years behind us was always mainly based on the FACT that they were THAT BAD not that we were THAT GOOD.

You just had to look at our European results under the rat to see that we did not reach some kind of footballing zen.

Any reasonable person could see that ‘the gap’ could be closed very quickly simply by adding better but not world beaters to their squad.

Of course we should have done more to push ahead but for me a closing of the ‘the gap’ was inevitable .

Right now, which club has the better SUPPORTers, Celtic or Sevco?

Sevco’s supporters believe everything they are fed by their own and the Scottish media. Our supporters are fed up being treated like second class citizens by a board who values cash in the bank more than success on the field. I know which group of supporters I’d rather be part of.

  15. Hot Smoked @ 09.59 am.

That’s a loaded question with a subjective answer and we should stop equating ourselves with the huns. ( IMO )

Maybe a better question would be. :- What do the Celtic support think of us being the richest team in Scotland by a country mile, yet gambling on the park ?

I like to think the Celtic support are the best in sooooooo many ways. The biggest attendances in Scotland and in the top 4 in the UK. We pay more to watch our team per season than any other team in Scotland. But we are not stupid, empty rhetoric from many of our custodians can be seen for what it is.

As always actions speak louder than words.

No, not joking and this gives validity to my question:

`.As soon as we get some solid results under our belt we will come together again.`

Just to be clear, I think the Huns are strongly behind their team beacause they are constantly being told their team is making great strides forward and they believe it. We have one really bad result and we are told we are terrible and we believe it.

    Cheerio for now.

I think its true though, concerns are valid as the result last week highlighted in a brutal way. But it can get better, its not rocket science despite the fact we seem to inexplicably overcomplicate matters for ourselves,

    ___

Bayo has been unfortunate with injury so I don’t really know how good he is. I certainly am not going to jump to any conclusions about his abilities.

Who’s to say we don’t sign another striker when Eddy leaves? Making a lot of assumptions.

  19. I’d also point out that it is unfair to call Julien a downgrade on Boyata.

Boyata was cheaper and was shaky for the first half of his Celtic career.

    ———————————————————-

It’s a good point you make – though I agree that we should be way ahead and that’s all down to a lack of planning and preparation on our part.

Someone (maybe on CQN?) mentioned the other day that the huns strategy only needs to be that they improve enough to ensure they can beat all the other teams in the league and not drop points the way they did last season. The games against us then become the determining factor and, even if they don’t have the better players/squad, it can come down to who wants it more on the day. At their midden last season they wanted it bad. That’s the danger.

However, it should also be noted that no matter how much is spent, there is no guarantee of desired outcome.
