The news is not the headlines, it’s the ABC figures

303

Why the disbelief that a Tom Boyd comment on Celtic TV on Saturday is still occupying news inches on Tuesday?  Tom did not indulge in profanity or prejudice; he merely made a partisan comment on an in-house broadcast channel.  But here’s the thing, he did so on a quiet news day.

Had Celtic lost to Dunfermline on Saturday, Tom’s profound musings would never have been reported, the 24-hour news cycle would have been filled by more important matters.

The football news industry, of which we are all consumers, requires stories, even when nothing of note happens.  The pressures of being a staff reporter at a media outlet, which is perpetually downsizing, when your job is to deliver a story people want to read and there is just no story to tell, should be clear to understand.

This is not justification for throwing Tom under the ink barrel, but it should temper our engagement with the process.  For reasons that escape my memory right now, we do not have a game tonight or tomorrow, so we might have to wait until Thursday before Ever-Green-TB gets a break.

Until then, the news is not the headlines; it’s the ABC circulation figures, which are again heavy with red ink.  The Record, which sold over 500k copies per day when CQN started 15 years ago, shipped 110k last month, a 78% fall in unit sales, the same is true elsewhere.  This is why Tom Boyd became a multi-day story.  It could be anyone tomorrow.

  3. One of the zombie Twitterati actually posted a picture of an alleged handball by Bobo Balde, which wasn’t deemed to be a penalty.

It just goes to show ye – we get our fair share of decisions, don’t forget Roy Aitken’s shy in ’89 sure too.

  4. McKenna is a dumpling and would cost a relative fortune, never in a month of Sundays should Celtic be going for him.

  5. So last week Paul suggested we would be soon be feeling ‘alone’. A few days later and we are being fed conspiracy theories about referees. Now let’s be honest, Celtic supporters love a good conspiracy against us theory and I’m sure Tom Boyd made his comments in genuineness. However we cannot rule out that we are being played and that this is good old fashion deflection and PR at work. Celtic were very quick to make a Statement declaring their shock at the SFA investigating. I would not rule out that this was wilfully throwing petrol onto the fire. It’s all bluster and going nowhere. So let’s keep our eyes on the prize. Lets get some decent players in and soon.

  6. The manager said at his press conference last week that the club were busy behind the scenes trying to strengthen the squad.

As regards bias, I have seen the odd decision go our way. I was going to suggest again that an independent body should review our games, say over last season to check the balance of wrong decisions. Then I realised we don’t have to. TRIFC’s very existence is proof of bias. That dishonestly registered players did not result in points lost and titles removed is proof. No “too fast to see what happened” no “view blocked by other players. ” There was time to think and perceive all the angles and they sided with Rangers every time.

  8. We, the fans are the ones supporting CELTIC, in all ways, every day every year every decade and we are the ones who love our club, really.

What I feel the club should do is make a statement, loud and clear. We should do all we can to get Jose Mourinho, and don’t say we can’t afford it, he knows CELTIC and he knows the proper value of our dear club, a lot better than our board of directors do, that is for sure.

Trouble is people who don’t know him are taken in by snippets and post match interviews instead of knowing the real guy.

I’m not really praising either of them in saying that. Limited players in their relevant situations but robustly effective in what they can do.

  11. Irrespective of who was the manager we should have lined up weeks ago (perhaps months ago) candidates for LB, RB, CB, CM, and back up striker. All irrespective of whether we qualified for CL or not.

Unfortunately bold moves and movie star themes will never be the order of the day whilst Dermot Desmond is majority shareholder and actually having shadow control of the majority of the other shares not in his name.

This man alone controls everything without any of the scrutiny the likes of Peter Lawwell gets.

Bottom line is that even without our traditional rivals breathing down our necks we have about a 40% appearance rate in the champions league these past 8/9 years.

With our closest rivals making the league more of the traditional 50/50 contest it used to be we will be lucky to see champions league group stages once or twice every 10 years with the current stratagy . Unlike the last time we were head to head second place finish will not get you into the champions league qualifiers in Scotland ever again.

Does not make good reading. You can only hope we are not awaiting the outcome of the AIK matches before deciding on any further moves – only a couple of days after the 2nd leg to get deals done.

We desperately need Julienn and Boli to come good.

    Funny old game.

  18. Imo , we are getting bogged down worrying about, Who said this and who said that. That papers bad and please don’t click here or ask me to click there.

    Boycott this and boycott that.

We are being played bhoys and Ghirls.

Massive deflection and sooooooo many are falling for it; in fact some are obsessed by it.

The real picture, the only picture is that our transfer policy is shamboiic and we are going into crucial games in crucial seasons having downsized dramatically.

Keep your eye on the ball guys and don’t get caught up in triviality.

    HH to all.

  19. Whether Boli comes good or not (unfortunately i dont think he will) we still need another left back

Surely it’s going to be the Taylor from Kilmarnock

  20. Usually I back the Board – but I am getting very worried. Where the H e L are the top class full backs we need. Everyone knew KT was leaving what preparation was there?

  21. glendalystonsils on

I have a feeling that Taylor will be our regular LB with Bolingoli making sporadic appearances covering for injuries/suspensions or substitute appearances towards the end of games which are well won .

Remind me how much he cost?

  23. Go tell the Spartim on

If its the Kilmarnock full backs then why were they not purchased well before now, are we haggling over who gets to take the ginger bottles back (for the PC and Prawn brigade, Ginger was what we called Soda pop)

  24. CQN-ers comments about the circulation figures for printed media being less relevant than the digital versions are of course on the ball. I wonder how much the Daily Record pulls in from online clicks these days compared to traditional advertising. Either way, they do so by playing to the hun gallery. They know the demographic in this country and pursue the hun pound.

That said – they have plenty of competition from Celtic bloggers these days who are also happy to put the boot in in order to make money from our club and support. They’re even on here at times with links to stories The Record. Maybe it’s a commercial partnership.

  25. !!BADA BING!! on 20TH AUGUST 2019 2:53 PM

To be honest, the biggest failure is the lack of a permanent director of football/head of recruitment

Dave King is an idiot but he even has enough sense to sort that out.

  26. Glendalystonsils………..It’s only in the play-offs where the teams are actually champions. However the farce begins when the so-called elite, the majority of whom finish miles behind the actual title winners of their respective leagues- Spurs being a prime example being 60 years since they won the title – sneak into the so-called Champions league of Europe.

Are we sleep walking into disaster? We need something to lift the support and create a sense of positivity. Yet, all we get is click bait and a sense of deadlines being allowed to pass (stuff that link Celtic News Now). Do Celtic put in a low bid and then just leave it, or do they fake interest to fool the support? You guys know what is going on better than someone like me so please – some good news.

  28. IMO the reason Ralston and Miller are still on the books, are to be makeweights for Killie/Sheep for the 2 FBs,and McKenna
