The precious Celtic brand

604

Some clarity………. This morning’s report on football brands, issued by brand management company, Brand Finance, has been hugely misreported.  It’s not a list of the world’s richest clubs, but an assessment of the value of their brands.  Although this sounds like boring business-speak, your brand is important, it’s how you define your club, what it means to you and to others.  It’s something you will never put a price on, but others do.

Celtic are listed 34th most valuable, an improvement on the previous year, despite the lack of Champions League football last season.  The usual suspects from England, Spain and Germany dominate the top of the list.

Celtic have been busy redefining their brand in recent seasons.  Hosting the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony positioned Celtic Park in a different way, while the on-going improvements around the stadium have lifted the environment enormously.

For a century Celtic were largely defined as part of the ‘Old Firm’, and in some places it still is, but with memories fading of that particular definition, Celtic are increasingly viewed in isolation.  A decade ago sponsors were fearful of engaging with one part of the Glasgow divide in case they alienated the other.  This is not the case anymore.

Every football club needs a stage, and without regular Champions League football Celtic will struggle to maintain brand value, no matter how good it performs elsewhere.

We have a distinct, positive, heritage, which football fans and other brands alike are keen to associate with, while the Celtic Park match day reputation remains high.  And although we take it for granted too often, the legacy benefits Celtic continue to reap from the Lisbon Lions is astonishing.  The brand benefits of the club being honoured by Uefa president Michel Platini on Friday, and the whole of Europe reporting Celtic as the first team to do the European Cup, domestic league and cup treble since Barcelona emulated them on Saturday, continue to position Celtic way ahead of where they would otherwise reach.

Try to avoid The Scotsman’s reporting of this story, they’ve horribly confused dollars with pounds, car crash of an article.  This item is an interesting backdrop to an article here last week.  Protect your brand above all else.  Don’t allow an aggrieved third party take control of it.

I strongly predict you’ll hear this sentiment later today:  ‘It’s not my money that’s going to be used, it’s the fans’ who will cough up’.

It’s early June.  You have four months to prepare yourself for the Great Scottish Run.  I know there are literally hundreds of you who have ran a 10k, and more who are capable of running/walking one.

Here’s what to do: Sign up for the 10k or half marathon, register with the Celtic Foundation and raise £125.  You’ll love it and give yourself lots of motivation over the summer months.

Register here then email the Foundation here cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk to tell them you would like to run for them.  Let’s get 100 people running for Celtic.

Well said, I was too young to appreciate big jocks glory years but my feck I fair enjoyed MON’s time with us.

  4. Had the good fortune of picking Graham Hunter up in my cab at QSS last summer.Top bloke. He was in the city looking around for a suitable apartment for his daughter who was moving into the city to study. He gave me plenty of his time and told me how the reason he was so close to the current Barca squad was due to the fact, that as he was starting out in his career as football correspondent in Barcelona,it coincided with those players breaking through into the first team.He has them all on speed dial,he calls them his friends, and not in a show off manner. He says the only thing that irritates him,is when they keep on banging on about Celtic,Celtic Park and the Celtic fans.Never shut up about it he says,Xavi and Pique being the biggest culprits.he says he replies with, what about the great Aberdeen team that beat Real in 83.He told me the craziest scenes he has ever witnessed inside a football stadium, was when he was working trackside at the game when young Tony Watt scored that goal.He said to me ,you being in amongst those in the stands that night ,don’t realise what it looks like from trackside. We then got chatting about the demise of rangers.I asked him if the sporting press in Spain, would have looked the other way if the Vice President of the Spanish FA had been proven to be at the centre of the biggest cheating scandal ever in Spanish football history in a previous club job.He knew some of it ,but not he fine details. He wasn’t surprised how the press handled it here .He knows how it works and finds it depressing.I told him to source Downfall,to find out exactly what happened, and the subsequent cover up that failed all of us up and down the land, who love the beautiful game.

Like I said ,really genuine guy.

    Celtic Mac,

If I remember correctly, the 125 Barca game was on a Wednesday night.

    ITV’s CL nights were Tuesdays.

I was in the Moldron hotel at Belfast Airport that night, ready to watch the game on RTE.

The hotel didn’t have Sky Sports.

Sitting on the bed, pint of Guiness to hand, watching the pre match build up.

Just at kick off, the screen went blank and a banner appeared, reading, ” This programme is not available in this jurisdiction”.

    Curses ans sweary words ensued.

I have to content myself with texts from my sons, even though my blood ran cold at every alert.

Thankfully, one of my lads managed to get me a copy of Setanta’s tape, which include the whole game, plus shots from every camera angle in the ground, which hey used for editing.

I sent the DVD over to my brother in England, who I know lurks here!

So, big fella, send me back my DVD along with the promised pics of your new grand daughter.

Martin’s background helped him a lot. He did some fine things. He also made plenty of mistakes. When he changed his system against Porto, we got slaughtered 3-0. Some signings were abysmal. Giant after giant arrived. His games/antics about staying/going were distasteful at times. He was lucky to have had Larsson and an English press which fawned over him.

However, as others have said, we were in the doldrums. Glad to have had him with us. Happy to have Ronny now.

  7. BGFC

You’re right he was a breath of fresh air but I think as a support we were overly keen on giving him hero status because that’s what we wanted as opposed to him actually meriting it.

Wouldn’t normally bother to waste time talking about The Rangers, but having read some of the reports today from the Dave King press conference, it really is astounding that they have any fool willing to pay to watch them play football ever again. It has to be a recurring nightmare for every decent Rangers fan, I can think of 2 off-hand, and I think I am beginning to feel sorry for them.

I see big John Guidetti has been talking drivel again goals scored in Scotland dont count towards International caps for Sweden. Oh that will be why Henrick Larsson played so often for Sweden then.I think big Guidetti is an attention seeker who should concentrate on improving his game. H.H.

    Dear john

Perhaps your bigger problem was that you all too quickly STOPPED scoring goals in Scotland?

  14. I don’t understand the surprise at the huns selling half a million jerseys,

it is after all only .1% of their worldwide fan base buying them

  15. Guidetti turned out like my intern this year, great start, loads of confidence, took loads of effort and training to deliver and then decided to leave and slag his long suffering employers on the way out.

I suspect he had a private education

MON’s team didn’t play football. As Jim Royle would say “My arse”. I refer you to Liam Miller’s goal vs Anderlecht. One of the best Champions league goals ever.

  18. Thoughts on the Brand Issue.

I say hello to everybody here…i am a Celtic supporter since 1966 [ie early childhood] and live in Manhattan…parents Canadian/Australian of mixed Irish and Highland Scottish Catholic extraction….very proud of this….large and cordial hater of all things HVN….my CSC is Manhattan #1 Fenian Bastards….[havent paid my dues in awhile…oops]

Anyway…now that that is taken care of I want to say how impressed I am with our brand listing. Take out the 15 Premier League Sides ahead of us [if you are in the Premier League and didnt get relegated you are pretty well guaranteed a top 30 spot] and we have the 18th best non English brand in the world despite playing in the SPL…by far the lousiest league any of the top 50 teams play in.

Ahead of us globally [non England] are 5 German, 4 Spanish, 4 Italian 3 French 2 Turkish clubs plus Ajax. Behind us are Benfica and PSV plus 2 Brazilian clubs and a few more from the big Euro Leagues. Those numbers from each nation reflect for the most part the number of spaces each league gets in the champions league.

To me its clear: the league you are in appears to be most of the justification for your ranking…if we can get into a meaningful league we likely land in the top ten globally because we [and to an extent Ajax} are the odd men out from a league perspective. Does anyone seriously believe that the likes of Sunderland Stoke Palace Swansea etc can contend with our franchise outside of the fact that they are bolstered by the league they are in….slip a few positions and you are out next year….come into the PL from the Championship and finish 10th your first year and….lo and behold you are a top 20 brand in the world…I dont think so.

We should be proud of our competitive position all things considered but equally frustrated as this ranking, league dependent as it is, does not properly reflect WHO WE ARE.

I always remeber a quote by Paddy Crerand saying that the Manchester United players, himself included, then on tour, were as sick as pigs when Matt Busby woke them to tell them that Celtic had won in Lisbon.

*manure were in Oz at the time and he qualified it by saying he was sick as he should have been in the team.

Loved MON but also still have highest respect for WGS who teice took is to the last 16 with a team of Telfers Naylors Hartleys Robsons mcmanus caldwell Sno et al. Far inferior to MON’s teams. Losing deep into extra time in san siro in last 16 to the eventual winners who slaughtered man utd in the quarters was some achievement and deserves the utmost respect. Especially since we didnt get the stonewall penalty that would have put us through

  22. croppybhoy
