The precious Celtic brand

604

Some clarity………. This morning’s report on football brands, issued by brand management company, Brand Finance, has been hugely misreported.  It’s not a list of the world’s richest clubs, but an assessment of the value of their brands.  Although this sounds like boring business-speak, your brand is important, it’s how you define your club, what it means to you and to others.  It’s something you will never put a price on, but others do.

Celtic are listed 34th most valuable, an improvement on the previous year, despite the lack of Champions League football last season.  The usual suspects from England, Spain and Germany dominate the top of the list.

Celtic have been busy redefining their brand in recent seasons.  Hosting the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony positioned Celtic Park in a different way, while the on-going improvements around the stadium have lifted the environment enormously.

For a century Celtic were largely defined as part of the ‘Old Firm’, and in some places it still is, but with memories fading of that particular definition, Celtic are increasingly viewed in isolation.  A decade ago sponsors were fearful of engaging with one part of the Glasgow divide in case they alienated the other.  This is not the case anymore.

Every football club needs a stage, and without regular Champions League football Celtic will struggle to maintain brand value, no matter how good it performs elsewhere.

We have a distinct, positive, heritage, which football fans and other brands alike are keen to associate with, while the Celtic Park match day reputation remains high.  And although we take it for granted too often, the legacy benefits Celtic continue to reap from the Lisbon Lions is astonishing.  The brand benefits of the club being honoured by Uefa president Michel Platini on Friday, and the whole of Europe reporting Celtic as the first team to do the European Cup, domestic league and cup treble since Barcelona emulated them on Saturday, continue to position Celtic way ahead of where they would otherwise reach.

Try to avoid The Scotsman’s reporting of this story, they’ve horribly confused dollars with pounds, car crash of an article.  This item is an interesting backdrop to an article here last week.  Protect your brand above all else.  Don’t allow an aggrieved third party take control of it.

I strongly predict you’ll hear this sentiment later today:  ‘It’s not my money that’s going to be used, it’s the fans’ who will cough up’.

It’s early June.  You have four months to prepare yourself for the Great Scottish Run.  I know there are literally hundreds of you who have ran a 10k, and more who are capable of running/walking one.

Here’s what to do: Sign up for the 10k or half marathon, register with the Celtic Foundation and raise £125.  You’ll love it and give yourself lots of motivation over the summer months.

Register here then email the Foundation here cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk to tell them you would like to run for them.  Let’s get 100 people running for Celtic.

    Hamiltontim, thanks for the reply.

When Graham released his book, Barca, some people that run Etims were at a promotion night for it.

It was at the time the stickies’ financial woes came to a head. One of the etims guys asked Graham about the media here and their dealing with the administration. He was not surprised the lack of investigative journalism but said it was a gaping open goal that should not be missed but will be.

My only regret about binning sky sports, my son and I can’t watch revista de la liga. Good football show with Guillem Balague and Graham , when he is on it.

Not sure how often we got shown on ITV after Sky Sports got involved in the CL. With four EPL teams in the groups, ITV would show any EPL game before us. Pretty sure they didn’t show the Celtic-Barca 125th Anniversary match.

I believe that a couple of years ago ITV made it plain that it would not show Scottish clubs in CL unless an English team was involved or English sides were already eliminated.

As CL is rigged to benefit only the richest, I simply don’t watch it unless Celtic are playing.

You will not find me criticising MON. He came in and did what he had to do.

I just wish that WGS, NL and Deila had been given half the money he was.

Then again, as I have posted previously MON was only given the money because DD overestimated Celtic’s prospects of getting into EPL.

When that went up in smoke it was downsize time. big time.

Celtic Mac, Stv can no longer show Champions League games as ITV sport have the contract.

I’m not bothered by ITV sport not covering any of our Champions League games, if we qualify, in the future. It means not having to listen to Tyldsley and Townsend.

My gripe with ITV sport is not acknowledging our achievement as the first club from these shores to win the big cup.

Catalan TV when they covered Bracelona’s celebrations yesterday, mentioned how the great Celtic 1967 team were the first to do the league ,national cup and European Cup treble. If they can give us praise, its annoying ITV sport can’t do the same.

  10. quonno

You’re right, more likely to be shown if in a group with an EPL team, a la Manchester United.

  12. Why should English ITV bother its arse about anything achieved by Celtic.

I always remeber a quote by Paddy Crerand saying that the Manchester United players, himself included, then on tour, were as sick as pigs when Matt Busby woke them to tell them that Celtic had won in Lisbon.

Nakasami, Robert Tressell, sorry for my late reply.

Naka’s free kick against Man U at Celtic Park, still is the best free kick I have ever seen. To get the height, power and direction from that far out was incredible.

Robert Tressell, Graham Hunter is far more knowledgable, won’t follow our media’s agenda and is to wise to be accepted by our media.

Quonno, the Man U player’s attitude may be due the fact, they were predicted to win it with the Busby Babes until that horrible tragedy at Munich.

I was in a panic at the idea of Ronny with a dog as the last known photo of him with a dog was with my Max. However I can report that Max is safely snoring in the couch. It is his specialist category for Crufts. He normally wins it paws down.

Well, they would be, wouldn’t they? Our Lions would have reacted the exact same if Mr Stein had shaken them awake to tell them Man U had become the first British club to win it.

  30. I don’t think it is a surprise that ITV show no interest at all in us (or Scottish football). The current version of the European Cup came about in part because ITV had invested so much in the old format and lost out big time when Man Und were eliminated in the first round (I think) by Galatasary or Fenerbace.
