The precious Celtic brand

604

Some clarity………. This morning’s report on football brands, issued by brand management company, Brand Finance, has been hugely misreported.  It’s not a list of the world’s richest clubs, but an assessment of the value of their brands.  Although this sounds like boring business-speak, your brand is important, it’s how you define your club, what it means to you and to others.  It’s something you will never put a price on, but others do.

Celtic are listed 34th most valuable, an improvement on the previous year, despite the lack of Champions League football last season.  The usual suspects from England, Spain and Germany dominate the top of the list.

Celtic have been busy redefining their brand in recent seasons.  Hosting the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony positioned Celtic Park in a different way, while the on-going improvements around the stadium have lifted the environment enormously.

For a century Celtic were largely defined as part of the ‘Old Firm’, and in some places it still is, but with memories fading of that particular definition, Celtic are increasingly viewed in isolation.  A decade ago sponsors were fearful of engaging with one part of the Glasgow divide in case they alienated the other.  This is not the case anymore.

Every football club needs a stage, and without regular Champions League football Celtic will struggle to maintain brand value, no matter how good it performs elsewhere.

We have a distinct, positive, heritage, which football fans and other brands alike are keen to associate with, while the Celtic Park match day reputation remains high.  And although we take it for granted too often, the legacy benefits Celtic continue to reap from the Lisbon Lions is astonishing.  The brand benefits of the club being honoured by Uefa president Michel Platini on Friday, and the whole of Europe reporting Celtic as the first team to do the European Cup, domestic league and cup treble since Barcelona emulated them on Saturday, continue to position Celtic way ahead of where they would otherwise reach.

Try to avoid The Scotsman’s reporting of this story, they’ve horribly confused dollars with pounds, car crash of an article.  This item is an interesting backdrop to an article here last week.  Protect your brand above all else.  Don’t allow an aggrieved third party take control of it.

I strongly predict you’ll hear this sentiment later today:  ‘It’s not my money that’s going to be used, it’s the fans’ who will cough up’.

It’s early June.  You have four months to prepare yourself for the Great Scottish Run.  I know there are literally hundreds of you who have ran a 10k, and more who are capable of running/walking one.

Here’s what to do: Sign up for the 10k or half marathon, register with the Celtic Foundation and raise £125.  You’ll love it and give yourself lots of motivation over the summer months.

Register here then email the Foundation here cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk to tell them you would like to run for them.  Let’s get 100 people running for Celtic.

  1. Been a while but managed to do a complete scroll back there.

Joe Filippis Haircut – I am indeed well and managed a 45 minute run this evening without too many aches or pains. Followed that up by devouring 2 Bell’s Scotch pies. Just on their own. Cooked perfectly and the ole Pastry was nice and crispy. I know this idle chit chat doesn’t appeal to everyone but nice to be nice I say.

Cowiebhoy, I take absolutely no responsibility for Sannabhoy’s dress sense. Although the one he wore at the Kano Golf Day last year was particularly fetching if a tad too revealing.

And on the subject of Sannabhoy, I’d recommend anyone who hasn’t already done so to read his post on page 1 at 1.32pm. Half a million!!!

And another thing. Don’t know if anyone else picked up on this, after the end of the CL final, ITV, because it is their last one, showed short highlights of some of the CL games they broadcast over the years. To the best of my knowledge not one of Celtic, not even Henrik Larsson, but two, count em, of Paul Gascoine, both in the colours of thon now defunct club. Wonder which club that film editor favoured?

I remember well the derogatory press Dr Jo got from the smsm and Lubo a shameless lot.

How they have kept their jobs in the media, is beyond me.

The Internet showed them up for the a**e licking scum they were/are….I feel better now:)

  4. Just a few weeks ago I was thinking about Company, Club and Brand so today’s article prompted me to post.

We all agree that the Company and Club are inseparable (except in the minds of Them, the media and some at SFA/SPFL). Those 2 entities cannot exist independently, they are 2 parts of a whole.

What did continue to exist at the death was the R…… “brand”. I don’t think we can or should deny that. Their fans (and the others) wanted to believe that by creating a new company + club + brand will make the perfect resurrection.

Their “brand” actually is worth something. Just ask big Mike, Charlie and his merry men who partake in the onerous contracts. Its the “brand” that keeps on giving.

The Old Firm was also a “brand” and for many years not many of us objected to that. Its only in recent years/decades that there has been a big push on our part to dissociate, IMO.

Separate from this I came across the following Forbes article on “brand”. An interesting read.

Thumbs up. That was what chuck bought for 5.5m.

The fact that he then conflated brand with a new incorporated club (July 2012) is what it is all about.

This is going to stay with the new club forever (or until it too gets liquidated).

Oddly enough sipsini, in hindsight, that period of propaganda contributed to the demise of the huns in my opinion. I remember the hun papers linked them to a Turkish guy for 20 million. Laughable crap from Iain King.

MurdochauldandHay &Wee Oscar. We have been linked with many many players since the window opened most of them made up by the MSM. Why would Hooper want to come back to Celtic he is with a Premier League club who im sure can pay him much more than the hoops ? I think we are best to wait until Celtic make an official statement about who we have actually signed.Hooper was after the big money and a chance of playing for England when he left us and I dont think that has changed. “Brand value” isn’t something that most of us will think about very often. It’s usually all about money and history (not always in that order), but today’s announcement certainly makes you stop and think about how Celtic is perceived beyond these shores, and how you throw away that ‘brand’ at your peril…

On which note… Those still trying to trade on the ‘Rangers’ brand (despite it being utterly trashed) put on a brilliant display today.

Anyone hoping to hear about a compelling plan to justify buying season tickets (at a 5% price hike!) would have been sorely disappointed…

But if you were after vague aspiration to do ‘whatever it takes’ to get into the Premiership and then compete… Dave King was your man.

Here are a couple of pieces from earlier today:

Have to comment on Dr Jo

From memory he signed six players during his time

Viduka. – chancer, but the profit we made let us sign Sutton

    Lubo – nuff said

    Dolph – nuff said

    Riseth – decent club player

Warner – short term loan signing who did a job

A youngster from Raith ( Paul Shields ?) who didnt cut it

He also transformed Henke from an attacking midfielder to out and out striker.

Imho Dr Jo had an excellent eye for a player, and whilst his success on the pitch was less than other managers of past 25 years, his talent spotting is absolutely up there.

We could do an awful lot worse than still having him on payroll as a consultant

    Hope not.

He chose low level EPl/Championship over spearheading a Celtic Champions League attack.

Why should we give him a second chance to get another move to the EPL?

I was listening to Radio Shortbread when Dr Jo was in charge, and James Mcpherson of Taggart fame was asked about Dr Jo and he said ” Oh that’s him who is the Nazi”, he laughed after saying it,

I’m sure he was sitting in for someone on one of the football shows…

Checkout this nugget front he regions, from Liam Kennedy of the Dundee Evening Telegraph…

The same Kennedy who advocated Celtic supporters have the book thrown at them after unsavoury songs were sung at a pre-season friendly in Lincoln. Of which he had zero evidence!

    Anyways…

    McCallister Gers switch in Tatters

Dr Jo was and still is a football visionary.

Ten years before he came to us, he was appointed manager/coach at Aston Villa.

When there, he tried to break the drinking culture at the club, but was defeated by player power, led by the likes of Peter Withe.

He left after a few months.

He is still a legend in his own country.

PLG suffered the same fate at £1brox.

Ronnie smashed any notion of it at Celtic Park.

Dr.Jo was years ahead of his time as far as British football was concerned.

  27. Clashcitybhoy on

Captain Beefheart – there was a youngster he signed who didnt cut it, but can remember who

Dr Jo also set up the signing of Stan Petrov before he left
