The precious Celtic brand

604

Some clarity………. This morning’s report on football brands, issued by brand management company, Brand Finance, has been hugely misreported.  It’s not a list of the world’s richest clubs, but an assessment of the value of their brands.  Although this sounds like boring business-speak, your brand is important, it’s how you define your club, what it means to you and to others.  It’s something you will never put a price on, but others do.

Celtic are listed 34th most valuable, an improvement on the previous year, despite the lack of Champions League football last season.  The usual suspects from England, Spain and Germany dominate the top of the list.

Celtic have been busy redefining their brand in recent seasons.  Hosting the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony positioned Celtic Park in a different way, while the on-going improvements around the stadium have lifted the environment enormously.

For a century Celtic were largely defined as part of the ‘Old Firm’, and in some places it still is, but with memories fading of that particular definition, Celtic are increasingly viewed in isolation.  A decade ago sponsors were fearful of engaging with one part of the Glasgow divide in case they alienated the other.  This is not the case anymore.

Every football club needs a stage, and without regular Champions League football Celtic will struggle to maintain brand value, no matter how good it performs elsewhere.

We have a distinct, positive, heritage, which football fans and other brands alike are keen to associate with, while the Celtic Park match day reputation remains high.  And although we take it for granted too often, the legacy benefits Celtic continue to reap from the Lisbon Lions is astonishing.  The brand benefits of the club being honoured by Uefa president Michel Platini on Friday, and the whole of Europe reporting Celtic as the first team to do the European Cup, domestic league and cup treble since Barcelona emulated them on Saturday, continue to position Celtic way ahead of where they would otherwise reach.

Try to avoid The Scotsman’s reporting of this story, they’ve horribly confused dollars with pounds, car crash of an article.  This item is an interesting backdrop to an article here last week.  Protect your brand above all else.  Don’t allow an aggrieved third party take control of it.

I strongly predict you’ll hear this sentiment later today:  ‘It’s not my money that’s going to be used, it’s the fans’ who will cough up’.

It’s early June.  You have four months to prepare yourself for the Great Scottish Run.  I know there are literally hundreds of you who have ran a 10k, and more who are capable of running/walking one.

Here’s what to do: Sign up for the 10k or half marathon, register with the Celtic Foundation and raise £125.  You’ll love it and give yourself lots of motivation over the summer months.

Register here then email the Foundation here cfcfoundation@celticfc.co.uk to tell them you would like to run for them.  Let’s get 100 people running for Celtic.

I think the line that he was still talent spotting, was a bit of face saving PR from Celtic.

I”m pretty sure he took on a role in Greece, and then moved to Japan shortly after he left us.

I should add, I dont think Dr Jo was a great manager, but he was a very good talent spotter

  4. All this Dr Jo talk

suggesting we should have used him as a scout.

I know what yous are all hinting at its going

to be the Michael Kadlec window at last.

Dr Jo was manager of Sporting Lisbon in 1983 when we beat them 5-0 in the uefa cup. A great manager with an eye for spotting a player.

He came to us after much persuasion by Fergus McCann after we had previously been turned down by long ball merchant egil Olsen who didn’t want to leave his dog in Norway.

But for mans best friend Ronny could have been the 2nd Norwegian to manage Celtic. Funny old game, football.

  6. Dr Jo and Wim Jansen, made Martin O’neill look 5 times the manager he really is.

The talent that man inherited , and the money he subsequently spent.

Some great great highs…. Some terrible lows.

Should of been 5 titles out of 5.

Definitely ahead of the game in many respects. For which he gained the nickname ‘Dr No’, among Villa fans, which probably originated in the dressing room. Even Arsene Wenger had to deal with a major drinking culture at Arsenal for years after his arrival. Alex Ferguson as well at Old Trafford.

Hamiltontim, sorry I never got back to you last night regarding your post about Graham Hunter.

Graham went to Spain for the 1982 world cup and had a great time. He ended up going back a year or so later to work.

I gather his wife and family still stay here and he works in Spain and London during the week.

When we we drew Barcelona in 2012, he was on Revista De La Liga the night of the draw.

He was asked if Barca would rather have not been drawn against us again.

He replied no. The Barcelona directors, players , management team were delighted to be going back to Celtic Park. They liked playing at Celtic Park along with the fact they liked the way they were treated by us.The Catalan media also loved coming over to Celtic Park.

Currently, he is by a mile the best football reporter from Scotland.

BGX. I always wonder if other Celtic managers had been given the amount of money MON was given how they would have done ? I cant say I liked the way MON had Celtic playing it was mostly back to front missing out the midfield.I am really impressed by how Ronny gets the team to play and if we keep improving we will surprise a few in Europe. H.H.

    Not a bother.

I agree about Hunter, every time I listen to him he comes across as fair, articulate and considered.

He’s quite often on TalkSport and any time I’ve heard him talking about us his comments have been balanced.

It doesn’t surprise me that he makes his living out with Scotland.

    Celtic Mac at 20.16.

ITV sport had a programme about five years ago, the fifty greatest champions league goals.

Naka’s free kick against Man u wasn’t in it. They showed a goal Gascoigne scored at Ibrox as part of it.

Liam Miller’s goal against Lyon could have been it. The build up play, over twenty passes, was superb. David Pleat, the co commentator at that game was raving about it.

Kenny Miller’s second goal against Benfica was another well worked goal on the break following a Benfica corner. Shaun Maloney played a fantastic pass for Miller to run onto.

Last year when the final was in Lisbon, not one mention in the commentary about us winning the big cup the last time is was played at Lisbon. Tyldsley comes over as being someone who has English football as the be all and end all.

Don’t expect any positive European Cup/ Champions League comments from ITV sport regarding us..

Met Bobby Lennox at the golf today. Says he is keeping ‘No bad’ and this was his third game this season. First time I’ve seen him using the electric buggy with his mate , but he was in good fettle (talking tat is) even tho it took 4 hours for the round.

  17. Still believe DCK was absolutely raging at being passed ‘Fit and Proper’ by the SFA.. That was his ‘out’ had they decided he wasn’t.

  18. Weefra, sitting here laughing at some of the fun on the blog today/tonight

Ankle coming along fine, a bit of bone removed which was jammed in my ankle joint, plus another bit of bone and cartilage from right under ankle ball

Will be fit for the start of 5 in a row season

Hail Hail, and glad you are also now in fine fettle ( avoid that BMCuWP mind :-)))

  19. I want to make it clear that I was joking when I said that my good buddy BMCUW was born in 1945!

That would make him 70 ffs.

    He’s only 39!

Can’t believe Naka’s FK wasn’t shown. To score a goal from that range against a world class goalkeeper takes something very, very special.

My best ever experience at Celtic Park seeing that

  24. Over Investment. A wee bit like spending money you don’t have.

Now doesn’t that have a familiar ring to it.

Has DK said any more about returning THEM to the traditions of his youth.

You the kind of thing. A quaint idea that you should pay your debts.

Or is that only for when paying up saves you from the chookie.

Not sure how often we got shown on ITV after Sky Sports got involved in the CL. With four EPL teams in the groups, ITV would show any EPL game before us. Pretty sure they didn’t show the Celtic-Barca 125th Anniversary match.
